ALSA UI E-Comp 2013: ITB Debaters Grab Varsity Title, Best Speaker

The 2013 ALSA UI English Competition varsity crown went to a team from Institut Teknologi Bandung, which last won the tournament three years ago. ITB's Jane Revevalin also topped the speaker tab, immediately followed by teammate Fauzan Maulana.

In the final, ITB A (Alris Alfharisi, Fauzan Maulana, Jane Revevalin) outclassed #5 Binus International (Invi Atmanegara, Jaran Walia, Wilson Salim) in a debate on whether to assimilate rebels into the national army after a conflict ceases. It was the second time the trio of sophomores from Bandung defeated the more experienced Jakarta-based team in three days after their first victory in R4.

ALSA UI E-Comp is the longest running debate tournament in Indonesia and considered one of the three prestigious classics. The 3-on-3 contest reached its 17th edition this year. Teams from Universitas Indonesia have won all championships except in 2007, 2009, 2010 and the most recent one.

ALSA UI E-Comp 2013: Binus International, ITB Vie for Varsity Crown

#3 Institut Teknologi Bandung A (Alris Alfharisi, Fauzan Reza Maulana, Jane Revevalin) will face #5 Binus International (Invi Atmanegara, Jaran Walia, Wilson Salim) in the varsity final of the 2013 ALSA UI English Competition, their second meeting in the tournament. The younger, all-sophomore ITB team won the first match in R4 but the opponent is bent on settling the score.

In the semifinals, ITB eliminated back-to-back champions #2 Universitas Indonesia, which dropped no match in the preliminary stage, ruining UI's chance for a hat-trick. Binus International, which has never won ALSA UI before, edged out another team with an undefeated record, #1 Universitas Gadjah Mada on a 3-2 split decision. The final will take place later today at UI's law school.

ALSA UI E-Comp 2013: High School Section to Get New Champion

A new institution will take the crown in ALSA UI English Competition's high school section after back-to-back title holder #3 SMA 4 Denpasar fell in their quest to score a hat-trick. In the semifinals, darkhorse #10 SMAK Petra 2 from Surabaya edged the reigning champions out to claim a final spot. They will face #1 SMA 1 Denpasar, which eliminated perennial contenders #5 SMA 2 Tangerang Selatan, in the penultimate match later this afternoon. Both finalists have never broken into the knockouts of the ALSA E-Comp, the most prestigious institution-based high school tournament in Indonesia, let alone won it.

ALSA UI E-Comp 2013: No Institution with 2 Teams in Semi

The 8 teams still standing in the 2013 ALSA UI English Competition come from 8 different institutions; none managed to get a second seat for the semifinals tomorrow. Reigning champions Universitas Indonesia and SMA 4 Denpasar still have the chance to complete a hat-trick this year but both of their surviving teams face tough rivals. Both had another team in the elimination stage but those squads bowed out today.

In the high school level, #1 SMA 1 Denpasar (Hansen Tanaka, Aldwin Wijaya, Kaizar Nararya) reached the semifinals undefeated. In the varsity section, #1 Universitas Gadjah Mada A (Amir Abdul Aziz, Nabila Aghniarizqa, Alif Satria) and #2 Universitas Indonesia A (Anastasia Sijabat, Elghafiky Bimardhika, Nisrina Praharso) also have beaten all of their opponents so far.

E-Comp is not only the longest-running debate contest in Indonesia. It is also the only competition in the country with two 50-team tournaments running parallel. For high schools in Indonesia, this is the most prestigious institution-based tourney. The varsity part is known as one of the three classics in this country. The match-ups for tomorrow's semifinal are as follows :

#1 UGM A v #5 Binus International
#2 UI A v #3 Institut Teknologi Bandung A

High School
#1 SMA 1 Denpasar v #5 SMA 2 Tangerang Selatan A

ALSA UI E-Comp 2013: Can UI, SMA 4 Denpasar Score a Hat-trick?

The longest-running debating tournament in the country, the ALSA Universitas Indonesia English Competition, kicked off for the 17th time yesterday. In the last two editions, SMA 4 Denpasar, also known as Foursma, reigned supreme in the high school category while UI teams championed the varsity level. Both institutions are bent on completing a hat-trick this year.

In securing their back-to-back titles, the winning Foursma teams paraded an aura of dominance, beating all opponents and topping the speaker tab. This year's line-up looks as formidable as their seniors after they won another UI-held debate tournament, Kompek FEUI, last February. The Bali debaters indeed are hot favourites this year. ALSA UI E-Comp is the most prestigious institution-based tournament for high schools in Indonesia.

UI has a different story. The 2011 and 2012 successful squads both lost a match in the preliminaries before bouncing back to victory. Only with the same kind of perseverance UI could triumph this year, especially after the powerhouse has come short from winning any major tournament in 2013. One of the biggest challenges will be from Universitas Gadjah Mada, which is fielding the same exact team that won the ALSA Unpad E-Challenge last February. ALSA UI E-Comp is one of the three classics in the Indonesian varsity debating scene.

Each category has 50 participating teams. Preliminaries will end on Sunday. The grand finals will take place on Tuesday at UI's law school in Depok.

Atma Jaya Debaters Excel in Climate Change, Sidoarjo Debates

Debaters from Universitas Atma Jaya came out as winners in two debates yesterday. Cindy Fransisca and Davin Sutanto championed the government-sponsored climate change debate that was conducted in Indonesian language. Meanwhile, another Atma debater Kario Teguh teamed up with his former SMA Tarakanita 2 high schoolmate Patty Regina, who now debates for Universitas Indonesia, and their junior Willem Chua to win the SMASH debate at SMA 1 Sidoarjo.

In Lomba Debat Perubahan Iklim, Atma Jaya defeated teams from Binus University (Fathy Ahmad Ibrahim & Maulana Nofrimurti), Prasetiya Mulya Business School (Raisa Nabila & Aniesha Goeslina) and Universitas Islam Negeri Jakarta (Indra Ramadhan & Ardhy Sitepu). In Sidoarjo, the Tarakanita-connected winning trio that called themselves "PNTM" outclassed a team from Universitas Brawijaya. Patty Regina also topped the speaker tab.

WUDC 2014: No More "First Come, First Served" Rego, History Affects Slots

Registration for the 2014 World Universities Debating Championships in Chennai will only open for 24 hours from May 20, 2013 at 1000 GMT (1700 WIB) but the allocation won't use the normal "first come, first served" policy. This is good news for Indonesia which has a slow Internet connection. Many from across the globe complained the previous way gave advantage to those with faster services like Western countries and Japan.

The participation and breaking history of institutions at 3 past WUDC competitions in any category will determine the order for the first ever WUDC in India. This is not only good news for powerhouses like Monash and Oxford but also an advantage for Indonesian schools that have broken into the EFL or ESL eliminations in the past 3 WUDCs. Click here to open the organiser's letter.

Important registration dates

April 29 -- Organisers will post list of institutions that have attended any of the last 3 WUDCs and the number of teams those institutions have broken, in any category, during those competitions.
May 17 -- Deadline for those who think the list has incorrect information
May 20 (1700 WIB) -- Registration opens
May 21 (1700 WIB) -- Registration closes
June 1 -- Deadline for initial registration result. May be sooner.
July 8 -- Deadline for deposit payment for teams on the main list.
August 5 -- Deadline for deposit payment for teams promoted from the waiting list.
September 5 -- Deadline for full payment
September 30 -- Deadline for full payment for teams who are eligible to replace withdrawals

Priority List

From May 20, each institution can register to up to 3 teams. The organisers will initially take in 354 teams. Then, they will allow 30 scholarship teams to enter and if resources permit, the total number may rise to 400. Institutions without any presence in the previous 3 WUDCs can only register 1 team. The significant change comes after this. Organisers will create a "Registration Priority List" with the following rules
  • Institutions first will be grouped according to their average number of breaking teams
  • The groups will be listed from largest to smallest average number
  • Then, institutions with the same average will be ordered randomly by a number generator
Allocation Steps

Step 1 - Each registered institution will be allocated a team
Step 2 - A second team will be allocated to all requesting institutions with a record of at least 1 break starting from the highest on the priority list.
Step 3 - A third team will be allocated to all requesting institutions with a breaking average of 1.5 or more during the past 3 years.
Step 4 - A second team will be allocated to all remaining requesting institutions
Step 5 - A third team will be allocated to all remaining requesting institutions
((The org comm seems to think there would still be slots after Step 5))

Waiting List

Theoretically, the allocation for the main list should initially end with the 354th team on the priority list and the waiting list begins from the 355th team. This can change if there are remaining slots on the main list after Step 5. Any institution with outstanding team requests then will be placed on the waiting list following the same steps outlined above. Eventhough the rules first say institutions that have not attended any of the past 3 WUDCs would not get more than 1 slot, they may request extra teams. Of course, they will be placed at the bottom of the waiting list. Although the likeliness is very thin, they could get their request granted if space permits.

Indonesia's 3-Year Break History (priority for 2nd slot)

Berlin 2013: Universitas Gadjah Mada (1 EFL), Universitas Atma Jaya (1 EFL)
Manila 2012: Universitas Indonesia (1 EFL), Sekolah Tinggi Akuntansi Negara (1 EFL)
Botswana 2011: Universitas Indonesia (1 ESL, 1 EFL), Universitas Gadjah Mada (1 EFL)

Trio of UGM Debaters Lead DOTY 2013 Table

Three debaters from Universitas Gadjah Mada are leading the 2013 Debater of the Year table following the school's March dominance in the Aku Untuk Indonesiaku debate in Surabaya and the English Parade contest in Malang.  One of them, Amir Abdul Aziz, is alone at the top after winning AUI and taking the best speaker award in E-Parade. There are 6 UGM students in the top 10 and 11 in the top 20, showing the rest that 2013 has been good for this Yogyakarta-based powerhouse. This success, however, has a caveat. The strongest debaters from other powerhouses like Universitas Indonesia, Binus International and Institut Teknologi Bandung skipped the tournaments that UGM won in March. They all will participate in Indonesia's second classic of the year, the ALSA UI E-Comp, at the end of April and challenge the UGM streak. Click here for full table. The current top 10 leaders of the table are:
  1. Amir Abdul Aziz (Universitas Gadjah Mada)
  2. Alif Satria (Universitas Gadjah Mada)
  3. Dianty Widyowati (Universitas Gadjah Mada)
  4. Jaran Walia (Binus International)
  5. Nur Rizki Oceano (Universitas Brawijaya)
  6. Erwina Salsabila (Universitas Gadjah Mada)
  7. Romario Tambunan (Universitas Gadjah Mada)
  8. Dennys Kapa (Universitas Indonesia)
  9. Indriani Pratiwi (Universitas Gadjah Mada)
  10. Invi Atmanegara (Binus International)
