UI Debaters Rise and Dominate at Inaugural Atma Java IV

#2 Universitas Indonesia A (Roderick Sibarani & Terry Muthohhari) won the inaugural Atma Jaya Intervarsity after defeating #1 Binus International (Invi Atmanegara & Jaran Walia), #7 Universitas Gadjah Mada B (Indriani Pratiwi & Muhammad Fidhzariyan) and schoolmates #4 UI B (Elvia Sumayastra & Revaldi Wirabuana) in the final. Roderick Sibarani also took home the best speaker award while the three other UI final debaters earned places in the top 10 list. UI's third team made it all the way to the semifinals.

Powerhouse UI had come short from winning a sizable, non-novice tournament this year. UI teams had reached the finals or semis of several major competitions but failed to close. The victory at Atma Jaya showed UI could still "rise and dominate", which is the tournament's motto, in a tough competition. Before this, UI teams won two small theme-based competitions this year and the 2013 National Newbies Debating Championships last week.

English Fiesta 2013: Brawijaya Debaters Sweep Trophy, Speaker Award

Universitas Brawijaya A - M.Fahri Akbar, Renny Fitria, Nadya Ayuning

#2 Universitas Brawijaya A (Renny Fitria, Nadya Ayuning, Muhammad Fahri Akbar) defeated #1 Universitas Indonesia (Aisyah Maharani, Ibrahim Panji Indra, Rachmat Nugraha) in the final of the 2013 English Fiesta to give their school its first trophy this year. Brawijaya teams had reached the finals of recent competitions but could not clinch until this victory.

The winners' schoolmate Zelly Sidi Zamzami capped the Brawijaya haul by winning the best speaker award in this Malang-based 3-on-3 tournament.

Most of the 18 participating teams came from East Java province but there were also teams from powerhouses UI Depok and Universitas Gadjah Mada Yogyakarta, earning the tournament a nationwide label. All the members of the UI team might be freshmen but they were undefeated until the final.

NUDC 2013: STIKES Bali Champions Region VIII

Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Kesehatan Bali, the host of last year's nationals, won the 2013 National Universities Debating Championship selection for Region VIII, which covers the provinces of Bali, West Nusa Tenggara and East Nusa Tenggara or known as the Lesser Sunda islands. In the final, STIKES Bali (Ida Rastiti & Rosa Tri Anggaraeni) defeated Universitas Udayana, Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha, both also from Bali island, and Universitas Mataram, which is located on neighbouring isle Lombok. All of them are eligible to proceed to the national round next month.

English Fiesta 2013: Unbeaten UI Freshmen Break First

An all-freshmen Universitas Indonesia squad (Aisyah Maharani, Ibrahim Panji Indra, Rachmat Nugraha) broke first in the 2013 English Fiesta at Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang above more senior teams from Universitas Gadjah Mada and Universitas Brawijaya. They won all of the four preliminary rounds today. Knockouts of this 3-on-3 tournament will take place tomorrow. The break list is as follows:

NUDC 2013: Underdog UKSW Tops C. Java, Fave ITB Takes W. Java

Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana, a school that has been involved in competitive debating since 1998 but without notable record, finally made a mark by championing the Central Java qualifier for the 2013 National University Debating Championship. In West Java, powerhouse Institut Teknologi Bandung, the 2009 national champion, reclaimed regional glory.

In the Central Java final, UKSW (Katherine Soekias & Rio Giovano) bested Universitas Diponegoro, the 2010 national champion and the usual winner of Region VI, Universitas Negeri Semarang and Universitas Negeri Sebelas Maret Solo in a debate on China. In West Java, ITB (Fauzan Reza Maulana & Vicario Reinaldo), the duo who won the Asian English Olympics last February, won the Region IV crown after beating Universitas Padjadjaran, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia and Politeknik Telkom. Last year, ITB lost the title to Universitas Parahyangan which had to forego this year's edition due to conflict with exams.

The division of the regions follows the Kopertis system, which is the way private Indonesian universities are regionally monitored. Each of the 12 regions can send the best 8 teams to the nationals, which will have 96 squads -- 192 debaters and 96 N1 adjudicators. All schools that reach the regional semifinals are eligible to advance to the main championship next month.

NUDC 2013: Regional Selections Kick Off This Week

Regional selections for the 2013 National Universities Debating Championship have started this week in a number of regions, including in West Java (Region IV) from where two finalist teams of last year's edition came. The others are Region VI (Central Java), VIII (Lesser Sunda), XII (East Indonesia). Remaining regions will conduct theirs later this month. Unfortunately, the ministry has not announced exactly where and when the nationals would take place next month.

The division of the regions continues to follow the Kopertis system, which is the way private Indonesian universities are regionally monitored. Each of the 12 regions will send the best 8 teams to the nationals, which will have 96 squads -- 192 debaters and 96 N1 adjudicators. Teams that pass the regionals cannot make substitutions for the nationals. Three best teams in the national final and the top team on the tab will receive funding to go to the 2014 World Universities Debating Championships in Chennai.
