ABP 2012: 75 Teams Confirmed, a Quarter from Malaysia

Organizers of the 2012 Asian British Parliamentary Debating Championships announced that 75 teams would compete in the upcoming October 22-28 tournament in Jakarta. Malaysia is the country contributing the most with 19 pairs followed by host Indonesia with 13. This will be the first time a major international debating event take place in the Indonesian capital. Asian powerhouses International Islamic University Malaysia and National University of Singapore will each field 5 teams while there will be only one pair from the Philippines. 2012 Second Trimester Debate Results

On Saturday, Universitas Indonesia's Just For Fun debates will open the last trimester of varsity debating in 2012 and wake up debaters from almost two months of lull. Debating in Indonesia has been hibernating since mid-July in accordance to Ramadan and the annual school holiday. The new academic year has started a few weeks ago and debating clubs are busy recruiting members. Before the games start, let us acknowledge those who achieved success in the varsity and open competitions in Indonesia in the second trimester of 2012 (May-August).

Euro 2012: Key Results & Motions

BPP Law School (Harish Natarajan & Jack Watson) won the 2012 European Universities Debating Championships in Belgrade in their third consecutive grand final. The same pair reached the EUDC finals in 2010 and 2011 when they were debating for University of Cambridge. BPP Law School, a British institution specialising in professional legal training, had never made it to the last debate of the continental tournament before. Harish Natarajan will be the chief adjudicator in the 2014 World Universities Debating Championships in Chennai. The key results of the competition can be found below along with the motions.

QF (ESL) THS life sentences without possibility of parole for serial re-offenders
SF (main) THBT schools should aggressively screen students, according to their abilities from a young age

GF (main) THW amend the US constitution to prohibit any involvement by religious organisations in the electoral process
GF (ESL) THW retrospectively remove all amnesties granted to those who committed crimes as part of oppressive regimes

ABP 2012: Only 47 Teams Confirmed, Slots Still Open


The registration for the 2012 Asian British Parliamentary Debate Championship is still open until August 20 after only netting 47 paid teams by July. There will be no further change of deadline as teams must submit names from that date. The tournament, the first ever major international debate to be held in Jakarta, will take place October 22-27 at Binus International's Senayan campus. The main list has no team from the Philippines, a debating powerhouse in Asia. The competition, however, still promises quality as all the universities that made it to the grand final last year, including title holders Rashtriya Vidyalaya College of Engineering and reigning Asian 3-on-3 champions Nanyang Technological University, will have representatives in the upcoming event.
