UGM Wins National Round of IHL Debate Again

Overshadowed by the more popular ALSA UI E-Comp, the national round of the 2012 International Humanitarian Law debate ended yesterday with host Universitas Gadjah Mada (Erwina Salsabila, Muhammad Fidhzariyan, Hadza Min Fadhli) defending the title and bagging the school's first trophy in 2012. The winners are eligible to compete on behalf of the country in the international IHL debate in Malaysia. The national round is limited by invitation and restricts participation to International Relations students. Only 19 teams joined the 2012 edition. Ironically, the international round in Kuala Lumpur is an open tournament that has attracted teams from all over Asia, including from engineering schools. This year's tournament will take place May 11-13 and one of the registered teams is called Pork Chop.

ALSA UI E-Comp 2012: UI, ITB, UGM, Bakrie in the Semis

The A teams of Indonesia's four leading debating powerhouses made it to the semifinals of the 2012 ALSA UI E-Competition, the longest-running tournament in the country. Universitas Indonesia, Institut Teknologi Bandung, Universitas Gadjah Mada and Universitas Bakrie have all won the national championship IVED. Bakrie joined the elite IVED champions club this year with a win against UI in Malang. But, it is the only one from the four that has never championed ALSA UI although a Bakrie team topped the tab in last year's edition. The semifinals and ultimate debate will take place tomorrow.

Semifinal Match up:
#1 ITB A vs #4 EDS UI A
#2 UGM A vs #6 Bakrie A

ALSA UI E-Comp 2012: Foursma May Clinch Back-to-back Title Before Final

Two teams from reigning champion SMA 4 Denpasar, popularly known as Foursma, stormed into the semifinals of the 2012 ALSA UI E-Competition, the most prestigious school-based debate in Indonesia, after eliminating their challengers today. If these Bali debaters win their semifinal matches tomorrow, SMA 4 Denpasar will create several historical milestones. It would be the first high school that can take all spots in an ALSA UI final. It would also be the first high school to win back-to-back ALSA UI titles, even before the last debate.

The two Foursma teams broke first and second after 5 preliminary rounds, suggesting the speakers also are prominent on the individual tab. While they are hot favourites, Bali debaters are fully aware lady luck may vanish at the last moment. A previously undefeated Bali team, entirely consisting of Foursma students, fell short on a razor thin split decision in the final of the 2011 national championships and bowed to underdog Aceh.

Semifinal Match Up:

#1 SMA 4 Denpasar B (Bali) vs. #4 SMA Tarakanita 2 (Jakarta)
#2 SMA 4 Denpasar A (Bali) vs. #3 SMA 3 Semarang (Central Java)

ITB, Bakrie Debaters Lead DOTY List

Seven of the top 10 spots in IndoDebate's Debater of the Year table for April 2012 went to Institut Teknologi Bandung and Universitas Bakrie students. The two schools are the only ones with multiple victories from Indonesian tournaments this year. In April, ITB speakers were victorious in the PNDC debate in Lampung and the ITS Open in Surabaya. Meanwhile, Bakrie championed the NDC-NES contest in Bandung, a nice addition to their IVED 2012 trophy. With the ALSA UI debates starting today, changes to the list are likely to happen. However, it will take an extraordinary run for anyone to take over ITB's Rifan Ibnu Rahman who has won 2 competitions and 2 best speaker awards so far this year.

The current top 10 are as follows:
  1. Rifan Ibnu Rahman (ITB)
  2. Aryo Febrian (Bakrie)
  3. Mutiara Hapsari (Bakrie)
  4. Fauzan Reza (ITB)
  5. Dungga Nur Prayogo (Brawijaya)
  6. Rendi Prahara (Unpad)
  7. Jane Revevalin (ITB)
  8. Luthfie Abdurrahman (ITB)
  9. Alifia Firliani (Bakrie)
  10. Egalita Irfan (UI)
