NSDC 2013: Title Goes to Central Sulawesi for the First Time
NSDC 2013 Champions - Central Sulawesi |
At first, they could not break into the knockouts but they kept on coming. In NSDC 2012, two of them represented their province but they fell in the octofinals. Last April, the same exact trio debated in the ALSA UI E-Comp, the most prestigious institution-based high school competition, as a team and again they could not reach the quarters. But they continued practicising under the guidance of trainers, including Universitas Indonesia debater Terry Muthahhari, the first person from Central Sulawesi who championed a nationwide tournament. Their hard work paid off at NSDC 2013.
Yogyakarta, champions of NSDC 2009, got a consolation prize. SMA 9 Yogyakarta student Marsa Harisa claimed the best speaker title. She and 14 debaters below her are eligible to advance to the next step in the selection process for Indonesia's World Schools Debating Championship team.

NSDC 2013: Central Sulawesi Achieve Milestone, Break First
Central Sulawesi (Ananda Bagus, Widyawati Karim, Andi Magie) broke first into the knockouts of the 2013 National Schools Debating Championship, becoming the first ever team from the province that can top the tab of any nationwide competition. They only reached the octofinals in those contests. NSDC is a province-based tournament that also is part of the selection for Indonesia's World Schools Debating Championship squad. JFF 2013 Title Goes to UI-Bipeds Hybrid "Jennifer Hudson"
The two top speakers in last month's nationals, Invi Atmanegara from Binus International and Universitas Indonesia's Roderick Sibarani, teamed up as "Jennifer Hudson" and won the 2013 Just For Fun debate, which had movies-themed motions and required participants to use names of celebrities as their team's calling sign. Invi retained the same title that she claimed last year with a fellow schoolmate.
#2 Jennifer Hudson proposed the final motion "This House regrets the poor's successful entrance to Elysium" and outwitted #4 Jennifer Aniston (Magreta Kailla Adenta/UI & Ahmad Naufal Dai/Ex-UI), #5 Steve Irwin (Dennys Kapa/UI & Fauzan Reza Maulana/ITB) and #6 Angelina Jolie (Nisrina Praharso/UI & Bramesada Prasastyoga/Ex-UI). UI's Boby Andika Ruitang topped the speaker tab. The competition also handed out a prize for the funniest speaker that went to Dimas Aditya from Universitas Padjadjaran.
JFF is an annual tournament held by EDSUI at the start of an academic year which employs zany motions. Futuristic motions featured in last year's edition. Despite its quirky nature, the event usually attracts top national debaters.

DOTY 2013: Jaran Walia Reclaims Lead After National BP Win
Binus International's Jaran Walia is back on the top of the 2013 Debater of the Year table following his victory at the National University Debating Championship that married for the first time the national titles in BP and 3-on-3 debating. He was the DOTY table leader in February. His partner and NUDC best speaker Invi Atmanegara climbed into the top 4 due to their historic achievement in Palembang last month. Both also gained points from the Indonesia Debate Open which none of their closest rivals from Universitas Gadjah Mada attended.
Indonesian debaters who broke in IDO received bonus points as the competition can be categorized as an international tournament with the presence of strong debaters from Singapore, Malaysia, China, Thailand and the Philippines, including the champion of the 2012 Asian BP. NUDC and IDO are the only tournaments that contributed into the table from August 2013. The race for the title is still open with a number of tough tournaments to go, including the prestigious Founders Trophy and Ganesha Open. Click here for the full table.

Brawijaya Wins Semarang Debate, Finally Beats UGM
Universitas Brawijaya from Malang finally won against a team from Yogyakarta's Universitas Gadjah Mada in a championship debate last weekend at a small Central Java intervarsity competition. UB debaters bowed to UGM in the final and semi-final stages in various tournaments held in Central and East Java this year, including the International Humanitarian Law debate, English Parade and Solo Open. The two universities are prominent forces outside of the Greater Jakarta-Bandung corridor where most powerhouses come from.
#2 Brawijaya (Nur Rizki Oceano, Zelly Sidi Zamzami, Muhammad Fajar) defeated #1 UGM (Alif Satria, Dianty Widyowati, Romario Tambunan) in the final of the ESDPC debate at Universitas Soegiapranata in Semarang on Sunday. Despite the nationwide billing, the tournament only had less than 20 teams, mostly from Yogyakarta, Central and East Java provinces.
