First Major BP Debating Comp in East Indonesia Set for June

Universitas Hasanuddin, the host of this year's IVED, plans to run the first wide-scale debating tournament in eastern Indonesia that uses the British Parliamentary format from June 17 to 19, 2011. The 1st Hasanuddin BP is open for teams respresenting Indonesian high schools and universities, composite squads that can prove they come from valid organizations, and graduates as long as they have not left their respective academic institutions for more than 4 months.

The competition will be held at the Unhas campus in Makassar. The cap is 80 teams and each school can register up to 8 teams using the N-1 rule although there is a breaking cap of 5 teams per institution. While Hasanuddin BP may have taken a page from the EDSUI Founders' Trophy, the oldest BP tournament in Indonesia, unlike FT, debaters in the inaugural competition must follow a strict dresscode of no shorts or sandals. FT has a tradition of encouraging debaters to compete in whatever attire they feel comfortable with, including sarongs, sleeveless shirts and flipflops.
