First Ganesha Open Title Goes to UI-ITB Pair
The second inaugural open BP debate tournament of this year, Ganesha Open, ended last night with a result similar to the first one, the Jakarta Mini. A team pairing debaters from powerhouses Universitas Indonesia and Institut Teknologi Bandung came out victorious. UI's Dennys Kapa and ITB's Dito Krista, competing as "Brooklyn's Finest", are the first champions of GO after defeating same-school pairs Boby's Spotlight (UI's Boby Andika & Bramesada Prasastyoga), Diogenes Club (ITB's Kirana Kania & Melliza Pretty Utami) and Universitas Gadjah Mada C (Amir Abdul Aziz & Nabila Aghniarizqa) in the final. Universitas Parahyangan's Dwita Aryani topped the speaker tab while her team "Makan Yuk Guys" broke first but fell in the semifinal of this ITB-organized competition.
The combo of UI's Roderick Sibarani and ITB's Rifan Ibnu Rahman won the Jakarta Mini last May. Universitas Pelita Harapan will also launch an inaugural open BP tournament next month, making it the third of its kind this year. Will it go to another UI-ITB composite?

Binus International Wins JFF, First Domestic Trophy in 2012
Powerhouse Binus International may have won a trophy abroad last May but snatching a domestic title had been an elusive task this year until its debaters triumphed in the 2012 Just For Fun debates at Universitas Indonesia yesterday. Calling themselves "Bipeds Fusion", Invi Atmanegara and Wilson Salim successfully defended the motion "Assuming the technology is feasible, THBT the state should resurrect citizens even without family consent" from Opening Government and clinched the title. The other finalists were schoolmates Jaran Walia & Melissa Irene (Chindians), a pair from Institut Teknologi Bandung - Rifan Ibnu Rahman & Jane Revevalin (Barnabas Collins) and composite team of UI's Dennys Kapa and Cheryl Nazik Cosslett from SMA 1 Bogor who called themselves "Rekall".
Cheryl, a member of Team Indonesia in the last WSDC, showed age does not matter too much in debating with her achievement. It had been years since a high school student last reached the final of a top-level nationwide open tournament. JFF 2012 might be a "fun" debate with outlandish motions but it attracted a number of debaters with previous championship and best speaker titles. One of them was Cindy Fransisca from Universitas Atma Jaya who topped the individual tab in the end. She debated with reigning national champion Sabarudin Adinugroho from Binus University under the name "Peranakan Tiong Hoa". Their journey ended in the semifinal.

JFF's Futuristic Motions to Restart 2012 Debate Season
Varsity debating will go full swing again in Indonesia from today with the 2012 Just For Fun debates at Universitas Indonesia's Depok campus. Futuristic motions will be used to wake up the competition from more than a month of slumber prompted by Ramadan and college holidays. Organizers have revealed 48 debaters from strong institutions, including the reigning national champion Sabarudin Adinugroho (Binus) and the current leader of the DOTY list Rifan Ibu Rahman (ITB), would take part in this British Parliamentary debate. Many of the pairs are composites, some represent their schools, one combines two-time ALSA UI winner Dennys Kapa (UI) with the best Indonesian speaker in the last WSDC, Cheryl Cosslett (SMA 1 Bogor), but all use unique team names that range from Maneater to Drug Dealer Conspiracy. Finals will take place on Sunday.
