WUDC 2013: Full ESL & EFL Break List

There are two lower categories in the 2013 World Universities Debating Championships -- English as Second Language (ESL) and English as Foreign Language (EFL). They are designed to appreciate those who debate in a language other than their mother tongue. The criterion are defined in the WUDC constitution and language review officers have discretion to weed out sandbaggers. Sandbagging, the practice of competing in a skill bracket lower than one is deemed capable of, sadly, still exists in international and domestic debating tournaments. Consistency in WUDC is also considered. A speaker who fits the EFL status must take the higher ESL tag if s/he has broken in the ESL category before. The number of breaking teams vary from year to year depending on the level of participation and demand. This time there are 16 spots for each of these two categories. Here are the teams that make the cut. Watch the announcement on YouTube here.
