WUDC 2013: Registration Opens Tonight!

Technische Universitat Berlin
Venue for WUDC 2013
From 3 pm Berlin time, or 20.00 WIB, today hordes of debaters around the world will try to secure slots for the 2013 World Universities Debating Championships. The 400 places are expected to fly off the rack in a flash although the registration period will last for 7 days.  To ensure Indonesian universities get on the main list, contact persons need to be prepared way ahead of time with a computer linked to a fast internet connection.

The registration follows a unique system. There is an institutional cap set at 3 teams. All institutions registering within the first 3 days will be allocated a first team on a first come, first served basis. Then, second and third teams will be allocated together, again on a first come, first served basis only to those institutions that registered in the first 3 days. If there are still remaining places available, they will be allocated in three-slot packages on a first come, first serve basis to those that registered after day 3. WUDC 2013, which will take place at Berlin's Technische Universitat, will only require N1 judges if an institution sends more than 1 team.

Malang Debaters Sweep Into DOTY List

The lastest changes in the 2012 IndoDebate Debater of the Year list did not come from anything in March; they derived from a tournament in February and almost all of the new entrants are Malang students. Due to accessibility issues, the tabulation results from the International Debating Championship at Universitas Ma Chung, which took place from February 15 to 17, only came to light in March. Contrary to the event's billing, the data showed there was no non-Indonesian debater. Moreover, most of the 20 participating teams came from Malang, where the university is located, and nobody from outside that city slipped into the top 10 speaker list.

However, the DOTY list still incorporated the results because IDC Ma Chung did not limit participation and there were teams from 4 other provinces, rendering it into a nationwide competition.Universitas Brawijaya debaters Dungga Nur Prayogo and Nur Luthfi Hidayatullah won the tournament and their schoolmate Rasuna Rizky Utami topped the speaker tab.

Leading Indonesian debating institutions skipped the tourney because it was too close to the nationals IVED, which was held a few days before also in Malang. The situation opened a window of opportunity for new names, many little known outside East Java, to enter DOTY. This is positive for the list as it displays talent outside the western area of Java, where most of the powerhouses reside. Hopefully, these entrants will show they can also excel in future tournaments outside of their hometown.

There is an additional layer of sorting used in the lastest table. Before the last level of sorting, the alphabetical order of names, the rank in the previous month is now a consideration in order to give a little reward to consistency. Click here for the complete table. The top 10 frontrunners as of March 2012 are:
  1. Rifan Ibnu Rahman (Institut Teknologi Bandung)
  2. Aryo Febrian (Universitas Bakrie)
  3. Rendi Prahara (Universitas Padjadjaran)
  4. Egalita Irfan (Universitas Indonesia)
  5. Bramesada Prasastyoga (Universitas Indonesia)
  6. Ashila Reza (Universitas Padjadjaran)
  7. Mutiara Hapsari (Universitas Bakrie)
  8. Rosmiyana (Binus University)
  9. Rasuna Rizky Utami (Universitas Brawijaya)
  10. Nadiyah (Universitas Negeri Malang)
While the Polinela tournament in Lampung starts in late March, it will conclude in April and its results will be incorporated in the next DOTY update. Other events that will also affect the next list include an open at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember, Surabaya and an economics debate at Universitas Padjadjaran, Bandung.

JOVED, Bawor Cup Organizers Correct Dates for July Debates

Universitas Jenderal Soedirman, Purwokerto
2012 Java Overland Varsities English Debate Venue
While the 3rd Bawor Cup and the 16th Java Overland Varsities English Debate will still take place in Purwokerto in succession, organizers have corrected their dates to July 4-6 for the former and July 7-11 for the latter. Rather than a 11-day debating spree, the two events with different styles will be tightly condensed in one week. Bawor is a British Parliamentary competition that annually pulls nationwide debaters to the southern Java city while JOVED is a classic 3-on-3 championship, the first debating tournament in Indonesia with an internationally accepted format. Purwokerto's Universitas Jenderal Soedirman debaters are the core in the organization of both competitions, which also involve local schools and Jakarta-based Binus University. The JOVED convenor is Unsoed's Arbi Wienandar.

Purwokerto's Universitas Jenderal Soedirman debaters are the core in the organization of both competitions, which also involve local schools and Jakarta-based Binus University.

Asian BP Jakarta Dates Confirmed

Come rain or shine, Jakarta in 7 months will host its first ever major international debating tournament. The 2012 Asian British Parliamentary Intervarsity Debating Championship will take place from October 22 to 28, organizers confirmed. Debates will fill the Binus International campus that is surrounded by malls in the southern leafy area of Senayan and debaters will stay at the Sunlake Hotel in the northern section of the city.

Binus International Campus, Jakarta
Venue of the 2012 Asian BP
Jakarta has seen a few competitions with international participation in recent years but all of them only could attract a small number of teams from overseas. ABP promises scores of debaters flying into the metropolis from all over the continent. It has been 5 years since the last major international tournament in Indonesia and it was Bandung that hosted the 2007 Asian Universities Debating Championships, not the country's capital. So, it will be interesting how organizers address the biggest headache in the capital, traffic, and not let the congestions dent the event.

ABP 2012 will have 6 preliminary rounds to decide who can qualify for the open pre-quarterfinals (top 24) and EFL semifinals on October 27. A day after, finals of both categories will conclude the competition. Reigning national BP champion Astrio Feligent Tjong from host Binus International is the convenor while University of the Philippines' Alistair Zosa, finalist of the 2011 United Asian Debating Championships, and Douglas Cochran, Chief Adjudicator of the 2013 World Universities Debating Championships, will lead the judges.

Registration fee is set at $250 per debater/adjudicator, quite a price for Indonesian teams who should take this rare chance to compete with the best in the region. Teams should begin to seek slots on April 15.

UADC 2012: Main Slot Deadline in 2 Days

Multimedia University, Cyberjaya, Malaysia
The venue of the 2012 United Asian Debating Championship
Teams on the main registration list of the 2012 United Asian Debating Championship need to pay pre-registration fees before March 14 in order to keep their spots. Binus International, Universitas Gadjah Mada and Universitas Padjadjaran each have 2 granted slots and can get more following withdrawals. On the waiting list, Institut Pertanian Bogor, Universitas Brawijaya, Universitas Hasanuddin, Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang and Universitas Parahyangan are eyeing for a chance to compete in Asia's most prestigious tournament.

UADC 2012 will take place from May 24 to 30 at Multimedia University in Malaysia. Universitas Bakrie won the EFL category of last year's edition after an all-Indonesian final. Two debaters from that winning team continued to triumph in this year's national championships. UADC 2012's knockout stage will have a EFL quarterfinal phase besides double octofinals for the top 24 teams on the main tab. The Asian crown went to National University of Singapore last year.

SMA 2 Tangerang Selatan Wins 2 Trophies Within Days

SMA 2 Tangerang Selatan may have set a few records. On March 2, the high school  won the Lazfest debate in Depok. Two days after in the same city, its debaters championed another tournament, the EIDC. It is difficult to find any institution that has collected 2 trophies within such a short span before. Moreover, one speaker was part of both winning teams. Fitri Aryani may be the only debater in Indonesia who could bag 2 championships after 4 consecutive days of debating.

Although Lazfest and EIDC were small in size and scope, the victories are vital for SMA 2's preparation for the biggest annual shindig for high school debaters -- the ALSA UI E-Comp. It is the longest-running varsity and high school debate tournament in Indonesia and the most prestigious for the latter category. Unlike the province-based National Schools Debate Championships, individual schools can send multiple teams to E-Comp. Last month, SMA 2 debaters also won the ALSEACE debate competition at SMA Al Azhar BSD in their hometown Tangerang Selatan after a grandfinal that pitted two teams from the same school.
