Universitas Sumatera Utara (Elsyam Maulana & Frederick Samuel) won the Region 1 selection for the 2013 National Universities Debating Championships after defeating Politeknik Negeri Medan, Politeknik Unggul LP3M and STIE Institute of Trade and Business in an all-Medan final. Four other schools also earned tickets to go to the nationals next month after they reached the semifinals. Three of them - Universitas Negeri Medan, Universitas Darma Agung and Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara - also come from the North Sumatra provincial capital. Universitas Syiah Kuala from Banda Aceh became the only non-Medan team that made the cut from Region 1, which covers North Sumatra and Aceh provinces.

UADC 2013: ITB Triumphant in All-Bandung EFL Final

ITB 1 - Arifian Adin, Alris Alfharisi, Vicario Reinaldo
#1EFL Institut Teknologi Bandung 1 (Alris Alfharisi, M. Arifian Adin, Vicario Reinaldo) championed the English-as-Foreign Language category of the 2013 United Asian Debating Championships in Manila last night to match the achievement of their seniors three years ago in the 1st UADC. They defeated  #3EFL Universitas Parahyangan 1 (Ignatius Ivan, Josefhine Chitra, Revian Wirabuana) in what was not only the fourth consecutive all-Indonesian UADC EFL final but also the first time all teams in a major international final came from the city of Bandung.

ITB 1 successfully knocked down the motion "This House Would Abolish Welfare Services for the Poor and Give Them the Equivalent in Cash Instead" although Unpar freshman Revian Wirabuana gave the best speech in that match. Both teams collected 4 wins and 4 losses in the preliminary stage. No Indonesian team managed to break into the main knockouts that had 16 teams from only 3 countries - Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines.

UADC 2013: UPD Best NUS in a Repeat of 2011 Final

University of the Philippines - Diliman campus
University of the Philippines - Diliman's Carlo Borromeo settled a score with National University of Singapore's Imran Rahim by defeating the latter's team in the final of the 2013 United Asian Debating Championships. In the penultimate debate of UADC 2011, he and his previous partners bowed to a NUS squad, which also had Imran as a member.

Last night, the proposal from #3 UPD 1 (Carlo Borromeo, Jesus Falcis, Valerie Inting) to ban inheritance withstood the challenge from #1 NUS 1 (Imran Rahim, Kelvin Chong, Xiao Hongyu), the only unbeaten team in the prelims. That victory gave UPD its first UADC trophy. Imran did not come home empty as he earned the overall best speaker title, the same honour  he got in the 2011 edition.

NUDC 2013: Binus Streak in Greater Jakarta Regionals Continues

Teams from the Binus University group won the past two Greater Jakarta regional selections before they both eventually claimed the national BP debating title. The 2013 team (Invi Atmanegara & Jaran Walia) continued the first part of the streak today, overcoming challenge from Universitas Indonesia (Egalita Irfan & Roderick Sibarani) in the final.

Binus International Pool of English Debaters (Bipeds) and Bina Nusantara English Club (BNEC) take turns in representing Binus in the National Universities Debating Championships. It is Bipeds time this year. The Binus-UI rivalry is expected to continue in the nationals next month.

The two other teams in the Region 3 final were dark horse Institut Pertanian Bogor and Universitas Pelita Harapan, a school that failed to reach the semifinals last year. Besides the four colleges, semifinalists Universitas Atma Jaya, Universitas Bakrie, Universitas Paramadina and Universitas Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa are also eligible to proceed to the big debate.

The division of the regions follows the Kopertis system, which is the way private Indonesian universities are regionally monitored. Each of the 12 regions can send the best 8 teams to the nationals, which will have 96 squads -- 192 debaters and 96 N1 adjudicators.

UADC 2013: 3 Indonesian Teams Advance to EFL Knockouts, None to Main

Three Indonesian teams are still standing in the 2013 United Asian Debating Championships. While none of them broke into the main knockouts, they managed to qualify for the secondary English-as-Foreign Language category that Indonesian teams have championed since the 1st UADC in 2010. Seven squads from Indonesia are among the 81 competing in Asia's most prestigious 3-on-3 debate competition that is taking place in Manila.

Institut Teknologi Bandung 1 broke first for the EFL eliminations, Universitas Parahyangan 1 third while Binus University 1 immediately followed at fourth. This year's organisers first decided only 4 teams could advance into the EFL semifinals but later they expanded the break, allowing two other teams to join the pre-semifinal showdown. Unpar and Binus need to win another match now to reach the semi. Last year's EFL champion, Binus International, failed to make the cut.

EFL Break (main rank/W-L record)
1. Institut Teknologi Bandung 1 (#40/4-4)

WUDC 2014: 19 Indonesian Institutions Among 477 Registered

The 2014 World Universities Debating Championships in Chennai would have a record-breaking number of Indonesian participants if all of the 19 institutions that registered earlier this week could each get at least one team slot. If all of their requests are granted, Indonesia would have 31 teams. This, however, is quitw impossible as the team cap is 384 with a maximum extension of 400. At the close of registration, 477 institutions from 78 countries requested slots for 905 teams. The organisers now have the unenviable task of sorting them out.  They like to give a slot for each registered institution but this can be tricky with these numbers. For the scheme on how they will conduct the sorting, click here for WUDC 2014 registration policy.

The 19 Indonesian institutions that registered and their requests are as follows:
  1. Binus International (3 teams)
  2. Binus University (2 teams)
  3. Institut Pertanian Bogor (1 team)
  4. Institut Teknologi Bandung (3 teams)
  5. STBA Teknokrat (1 team)
  6. Universitas Atma Jaya (1 team)

  8. Universitas Brawijaya (1 team)
  9. Universitas Diponegoro (1 team)
  10. Universitas Gadjah Mada (2 teams)
  11. Universitas Indonesia (3 teams)

In the final, they outclassed cross-town opponents Universitas Atma Jaya Yogyakarta, Universitas Ahmad Dahlan and Universitas Sanata Dharma.

The division of the regions follows the Kopertis system, which is the way private Indonesian universities are regionally monitored. Each of the 12 regions can send the best 8 teams to the nationals, which will have 96 squads -- 192 debaters and 96 N1 adjudicators. All schools that reach the regional semifinals are eligible to advance to the main championship next month. UI Debaters Rise and Dominate at Inaugural Atma Java IV

#2 Universitas Indonesia A (Roderick Sibarani & Terry Muthohhari) won the inaugural Atma Jaya Intervarsity after defeating #1 Binus International (Invi Atmanegara & Jaran Walia), #7 Universitas Gadjah Mada B (Indriani Pratiwi & Muhammad Fidhzariyan) and schoolmates #4 UI B (Elvia Sumayastra & Revaldi Wirabuana) in the final. Roderick Sibarani also took home the best speaker award while the three other UI final debaters earned places in the top 10 list. UI's third team made it all the way to the semifinals.

Powerhouse UI had come short from winning a sizable, non-novice tournament this year. UI teams had reached the finals or semis of several major competitions but failed to close. The victory at Atma Jaya showed UI could still "rise and dominate", which is the tournament's motto, in a tough competition. Before this, UI teams won two small theme-based competitions this year and the 2013 National Newbies Debating Championships last week.

NUDC 2013: Underdog UKSW Tops C. Java, Fave ITB Takes W. Java

Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana, a school that has been involved in competitive debating since 1998 but without notable record, finally made a mark by championing the Central Java qualifier for the 2013 National University Debating Championship. In West Java, powerhouse Institut Teknologi Bandung, the 2009 national champion, reclaimed regional glory.

In the Central Java final, UKSW (Katherine Soekias & Rio Giovano) bested Universitas Diponegoro, the 2010 national champion and the usual winner of Region VI, Universitas Negeri Semarang and Universitas Negeri Sebelas Maret Solo in a debate on China. In West Java, ITB (Fauzan Reza Maulana & Vicario Reinaldo), the duo who won the Asian English Olympics last February, won the Region IV crown after beating Universitas Padjadjaran, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia and Politeknik Telkom. Last year, ITB lost the title to Universitas Parahyangan which had to forego this year's edition due to conflict with exams.

Each of the 12 regions can send the best 8 teams to the nationals, which will have 96 squads -- 192 debaters and 96 N1 adjudicators. NUDC 2013: Regional Selections Kick Off This Week

Regional selections for the 2013 National Universities Debating Championship have started this week in a number of regions, including in West Java (Region IV) from where two finalist teams of last year's edition came. The others are Region VI (Central Java), VIII (Lesser Sunda), XII (East Indonesia). Remaining regions will conduct theirs later this month. Unfortunately, the ministry has not announced exactly where and when the nationals would take place next month.

The division of the regions continues to follow the Kopertis system, which is the way private Indonesian universities are regionally monitored. Each of the 12 regions will send the best 8 teams to the nationals, which will have 96 squads -- 192 debaters and 96 N1 adjudicators. Teams that pass the regionals cannot make substitutions for the nationals. Three best teams in the national final and the top team on the tab will receive funding to go to the 2014 World Universities Debating Championships in Chennai.

UI Debaters Sweep Awards at Dinar Islamic Econ Debate

Six debaters from Universitas Indonesia went to the 2013 Dinar debate at STEI Tazkia Bogor and all reached the penultimate match. In the all-UI final, EDS UI (Badai Yuda, Ibrahim Panji, Patty Regina) defeated schoolmates UI (Andrearto Saleh, Opi Aristya, Rio Trimono) to champion the tournament that had a Islamic economics theme. Besides the two top team awards, the UI debaters also flooded the high end of the speaker tab. UI freshman Badai Yuda and his team mate Patty Regina bagged the best speaker title.

This is the second trophy for UI this year from a small theme-based contest - the first one came from the PetroGas Day debate. Like PGD, Dinar only had less than 10 teams. The final was actually conducted on Saturday but organisers only announced the results today. On Sunday, UI also won the 2013 National Newbie Debating Competition, a sizable tournament but exclusively for novices. Powerhouse UI has come short from winning a major competition so far in 2013.
