History is going to be made from tomorrow's grandfinal of the 15th Indonesian Varsities English Debate. #1 Universitas Indonesia 1 (Aulia Anggita, Bramesada Prasastyoga, Egalita Irfan) will try to give their school its ninth IVED trophy while opponent #3 Universitas Bakrie 1 (Aryo Febrian, Mutiara Hapsari, Yudha Mustafa) want to become the first from their university to champion a nationwide debate competition.
Institutional reputation suggests UI is the obvious bet. But individual records show the strength of the other side. Two Bakrie 1 members, Aryo and Yudha, are experienced debaters who bagged the EFL trophy in the latest United Asian Debating Championships. Nobody in UI 1 has championed any debate tournament where they represent UI and two of the speakers are only in their second year. However, UI 1 are at top form with 9 consecutive wins.
UI 1 and Bakrie 1 reached the final after eliminating teams from reigning champion Universitas Gadjah Mada. The original plan was to hold the final tonight after 3 knockout rounds and announce the results on the next day. The final now is scheduled to take place tomorrow evening after excursions. Before this match-up, there will be a novice final between Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta 1 and Universitas Hasanuddin 2.
