Nobody has defeated reigning champions Universitas Gadjah Mada and dark horse Universitas Bakrie yet at the 15th Indonesia Varsities English Debate after 3 rounds. All teams from the two schools (UGM1, UGM2, Bakrie1) emerged unblemished at the half way mark of the preliminary stage. All of those 3 teams have members who have won or tasted the grandfinal stage of a tournament. Powerhouses Universitas Indonesia, Institut Teknologi Bandung and Binus International each sent 3 teams with many fresh faces. At least one of their squads suffered from defeat yesterday.
There will be 3 more prelims to go today before the break. Many teams at the top end of the tab may only meet their first worthy challenger in R4. Teams with more than two losses are unlikely to advance into the knockouts. The first day of debates ended around 9 pm last night after delays. Today may be no different. According to the official rundown, the break will be announced an hour after R6 ends.
