ASDC 2012: Results and Motions

Malaysia's SMK Sri Pertama A championed the 2012 Asian Schools Debating Championships after beating  Ateneo Pioneer A from the Philippines in the grand final yesterday. The Selangor-based school won all of their debates from the first round until the last match. SMA 1 Sidoarjo, the only school from Indonesia that joined the competition, won 2 of the 7 preliminaries and ended at #64 out of 74 participants.


Motions used in ASDC 2012

Round 1: Just to warm you up 
M1: THW criminalize adultery.
M2: THW ban circumcisions for children.
M3: THW allow the denial of genocides.


Round 2: Education
M1: THW require politicians to send their children to public schools.
M2: TH supports the right of teachers and students (non- minors) to engage in romantic relationships.
M3: THW teach atheism as a subject in schools. 

Round 3: Love, Sex, and Gender
M1: THW force Disney to feature a homosexual lead character in their next cartoon blockbuster
M2: THW make all awards at the Oscars gender neutral
M3: THW set an expiration date for marriages

Round 4: Culture
M1: TH regrets the way society has come to celebrate Christmas
M2: TH supports the right of States to disallow Lady Gaga from performing in their country, even though a majority of the citizens in that country would welcome her
M3: THW lift the ban on all controversial books 

Round 5: Law and Order
M1: THBT the media should not disclose the ethnicity and religious affiliation of individuals who commit violent crimes
M2: THW ban the hiring of private criminal defence lawyers
M3: THW ban ex-convicts from publishing books and making movies about the crimes they committed

Round 6: A Day At the Movies
M1: Assume that we have the necessary technology to trap people in their dreams. These individuals are able to shape the world in these dreams. THW allow the miserable to trap themselves in their dreams until they die.
M2: Assume that mutants walk the earth. They are born with mutant superpowers. They are potentially dangerous to national security. THBT the State should identify and subsequently place them under the sole custody of the State.
M3: Assume that Pokemon roamed the earth. A lot of these Pokemon have been captured by Pokemon trainers and are imprisoned in Pokeballs. These Pokemon are regularly used in Pokemon battles. THW free them all.

Round 7: Politics
M1: THW ban religious lobby groups
M2: THW give sexual minorities two votes each
M3: THBT the state should compensate homeless people for their injuries and deaths

Pre-Octo: Women
M1: THBT the feminist movement should oppose affirmative action for women
M2: THWThis house would require women to seek the consent of the father of the child before she undergoes an abortion
M3: THBT women should pay less income tax

Octo: International Relations
M1: THW establish an ASEAN court of human rights
M2: THBT Israel should unconditionally and permanently stop the construction of all Jewish settlements in the West Bank
M3: THBT cyber attacks should be recognized as the use of military force

Quaters: Corporations
M1: THBT the workers should own a majority of the shares in the companies they work for
M2: THW abolish all labour unions in developing countries
M3: THBT companies should be liable for the violation of labor standards by companies they have outsourced their operations to

Novice Semis: Kids and Sex
M1: THW allow parents to implant a tracking device into their children
M2: THBT that police officers should should pose as children on Facebook to entrap paedophiles
M3: THW set up brothels in military camps

M2: THBT the UN should hire private military contractors for its military operations
M3: THW allow targeted attacks at civilians if it can be proven to significantly reduce casualties in the long run
