Teams from Universitas Indonesia are in pole position to defend the title in the 2013 Java Overland Varsities English Debate after they broke first and second into the elimination stage. #1 UI B (Aulia Anggita, Elvia Sumayastra, Magreta Kailla Adenta) came out of the preliminaries undefeated while #2 UI A (Anastasia Sijabat, Egalita Irfan, Revaldi Wirabuana) had the highest score among teams that tabbed one loss on their sheets. UI won last year's JOVED without dropping a single match. Powerhouse UI is looking for its first classic trophy in 2013 after failed attempts in IVED and ALSA UI - the two other classics.
The tournament darkhorse is #3 Universitas Brawijaya A (Rizki Oceano, Queentries Regar, Zelly Sidi Zamzami) after the host team advanced over favourites from Universitas Gadjah Mada. Knockouts of the 17th edition of JOVED, the first
debating tournament in Indonesia that used an internationally accepted
