WUDC 2012: Updates & Motions from Prelim Day 2

The second day of preliminaries at the 2012 World Universities Debating Championships in Manila had an Indonesian team scoring back-to-back wins, the emergence of an unofficial twitter tab and long motions. There will be 3 more rounds today but none of their results will be announced at the chambers. The tension will peak around the turn of the year when the main, ESL and EFL breaks are revealed.

Universitas Indonesia C (Ahmad Naufal Dai & Irene Severina) is the top Indonesian pair entering R7 with 11 VPs after winning R4 and R5. Binus International A (Astrio Feligent & Christian Leonardo), which had a spirited comeback after tough early rounds, ended Prelim Day 2 with 10 VPs. UI A (Adlini Ilma Ghaisany & Roderick Sibarani) and Universitas Gadjah Mada A (Tanti Kosmiyati & Amir Abdul Aziz) follow with 9 VPs.

There are also several teams on 8 VPs, including Binus University A (Bryan Gunawan & Sabarudin Adinugroho) and Sekolah Tinggi Akuntansi Negara A (Teddy Trihatmojo & Halim Nuswantoro). Naufal and Irene still can break into the main knockouts while the rest need to boost their performance to earn spots in the ESL/EFL debates.

For the first time in WUDC history, a shadow tab made from the wave of tweets coming from Manila has emerged. Click here for the active spread that also shows winning possibilities ala sports betting. One of its masterminds is Can Okar, the 2010 WUDC Chief Adjudicator. The tab covers more than 170 from almost 400 participating teams in WUDC 2012. Less than half but the powerhouses are all there.

According to this unoffical tab, the top 3 teams come from Victoria University of Wellington, University of Oxford and Monash University -- the usual suspects. Victoria B has 17 VPs, one short from the perfect score. The highest team from a non-Anglo Saxon nation is Ateneo de Manila University A with 13 VPs. Several online predictions believe only those with 19+ points could break this year. In previous WUDCs, many teams with 18 VPs could slip into the knockouts.

Motions in the first 6 rounds did not touch current affairs. No motions on the Arab Spring, Palestine, Euro debt, US foreign policy, China or the Internet yet. Many of them are long with complex forms and critical tweets have started to float around. The motions on prelim day 2 are as follows:

R4 THW require individuals to use all their wealth beyond $5 million for philantrophic projects
R5 THW require deaf parents to send their children, whether deaf or hearing, to mainstream schools for their primary and secondary education
R6 TH supports politicians who pass progressive legislation even when it is contrary to the wishes of the democratic electorate

WUDC 2012: UI Team at Double-Digit After R5

Universitas Indonesia C (Ahmad Naufal Dai & Irene Severina) won 3 rounds in a row from R3 to R5 at the 2012 World Universities Debating Championships in Manila. With 4 preliminaries to go, including one more today, they are at a favourable standing with 11 VPs so far. Usually, teams need to garner 18 VPs in 9 rounds to advance into the main WUDC break. No Indonesian pair have broken into the main knockouts and the current record-holder, another UI team, ended with 16 points in WUDC 2008 in Bangkok. Several Indonesians made the ESL/EFL cut in previous editions.

The teams that Naufal and Irene defeated include University of Auckland (NZ), Georgetown University (US) and a pair from University of Leiden (NL) who championed the ESL category at Oxford IV this year. Last year, Naufal's team bagged 11 VPs and reached the EFL semifinals. This is Irene's first Worlds. The pair, both majoring in International Relations, and another UI student won the 3-on-3 Java Overland Varsities English Debate in 2009. Naufal won the 2009 Founders' Trophy and the 2011 Binus International Debate with other UI partners.

   

WUDC 2012: Updates, Motions, Bid News from Prelim Day 1

Preliminary rounds of the 2012 World Universities Debating Championships began yesterday at Manila's De La Salle University with 3 rounds. Despite livestreaming difficulties, missing teams and elevator clogs, the tournament ran relatively smooth.

Several of Indonesia's 17 participating teams won their early debates, including Universitas Indonesia A (Adlini Ilma Ghaisany & Roderick Sibarani) and Binus University B (Rosmi Yana & Radite Adjie) that both wrapped up the day with 6 VPs. UI A won R2 from CO in a debate that had a team from the renowned Princeton University as CG. Usually, teams need 18 VPs after 9 rounds to make the cut for the main WUDC break.

At least 6 teams enter R4 with a perfect score of 9 VPs, including reigning Euro champions University of Oxford A (Ben Woolgar & Hugh Burns) and an ESL team, University of Utrecht A (Danique von Koppenhagen & Tomas Beerthuis).

After a buzz that Indonesia might table a bid for WUDC 2014, country representative Bryan Gunawan tweeted the Education Ministry wants to host the championships in 2015. According to the WUDC Constitution article 15, a bid must come from a college or a debating society, suggesting the government should find a varsity partner to be the eligible bidder.

The motions on Day 1 of the preliminaries are as follows:
R1 THW make fathers take paternity leave
R2 THW prevent politicians from making fact claims, that, while not technically lies, are substantially misleading to voters
R3 THW force large companies who leave an area to pay the costs of any resulting structural unemployment

WUDC 2012: Indonesia Sends Big Contingent, Gets "A" Status

The 2012 World Universities Debating Championships, the most prestigious debating tournament on the planet, officially kicked off today at Manila's De La Salle University with a record-tying number of Indonesian teams. Universitas Indonesia sent the 2 first Indonesian teams to WUDC 1999, coincidentally also held in the Philippines. In WUDC 2005 in Malaysia, there were 17 Indonesian teams, eclipsing the past record by far. When WUDC 2012 debates start tomorrow, the same number will join the competition.

Besides 4 pairs from UI, there will be 2 squads each from Binus University and Universitas Atma Jaya while Binus International, Institut Pertanian Bogor, Institut Teknologi Bandung, Sekolah Tinggi Akuntansi Negara, STBA Teknokrat, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Universitas Negeri Padang, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta and Universitas Padjadjaran respectively sent a team. These institutions had reached a decision to have Bryan Gunawan from Binus University as the Indonesian representative for the Worlds Council.

Bryan today tweeted that Indonesia won the right to earn a "A" nation voting status because there had been at least 4 Indonesian institutions in the last 2 WUDCs. More than 6 Indonesian universities sent teams to WUDC 2010 and 2011. That new status means Indonesia now has 4 votes in the council, which will be crucial in deciding the next host. Up until now, there has been no bids for WUDC 2014 although there is a rumour there might be an audacious attempt to bring the competition to Indonesia in the near future.

IndoDebate Hits Exceed 50,000, More Updates to Come

IndoDebate reached a milestone today after crossing the line of 50,000 hits. Since Jan. 7 this year until this post, the blog has uploaded 243 stories on the Indonesian debating scene or around 20 per month, attracting an average of 150 hits per day. Thank you for following, supporting or at least taking interest in this blog.  IndoDebate started as an individual project to document results that were scattered in several mailing lists, especially in Indodebaters, club websites, Facebook and Twitter accounts and it will continue to do that. However, an analysis of the hits showed that the number of users spiked dramatically at the end of major Indonesian tournaments. That is why IndoDebate will keep on providing updates from the local circuit.

The blog will also stick to the manageable model of short stories. There have been suggestions to convey opinions on debating issues in Indonesia or push certain agendas like the idea of a debating union. What this blog can promise is it will chronicle the twists and turns of the Indonesian debating scene and let those who are active debaters take centerstage. The next series of postings will exactly follow that line as the blog will have updates on what Indonesian debaters face at the pinnacle of varsity debating -- the ongoing World Universities Debating Championships in Manila.    

2011 Third Trimester Debate Results

2012 is a few days away. The 2011 debating season in Indonesia technically reached its end in November as clubs used December to prepare for the World Universities Debating Championships in Manila by sending teams to pre-Worlds competitions abroad or intensifying practices at home. WUPID 2011: Victoria Victorious on First Try

#2 Victoria University of Wellington (Richard D'Ath & Seb Templeton) won the 2011 World Universities Peace Invitational Debate, outwitting #1 University of Oxford in the final that ended today with a 5-4 split decision. The two other finalists were Ateneo de Manila University and University of Cambridge.

Victoria and Oxford had been at each other throughout the tournament that funded the best debating universities to come to Malaysia. Victoria came second in R3, R4 and R5 to Oxford while the latter's only dropped point came from R2 when the former triumphed. This year is this first time Victoria was invited to WUPID.


In the final, Opening Government Oxford proposed the motion "This House Believes That Unfettered Capitalism is the Greatest Obstacle to World Peace" while Victoria knocked it down from Closing Opposition. Oxford's Benjamin Woolgar topped the speaker tab.  The winning pair six months ago championed the Australasian Intervarsities Debating Championships.

Two Indonesian teams competed in the 2011 WUPID. One of them, Binus International A (Astrio Feligent & Christian Leonardo) almost broke into the knockouts after collecting 9 VPs, the same amount of points gained by #10-#16 teams. Slightly lower speaker scores denied the pair.

ABP 2011: Indonesians Take Top 3 EFL Speakers

Leo Wibisono from Institut Pertanian Bogor bagged the best EFL speaker award at the 2011 Asian British Parliamentary Debating Championships. Two other Indonesians, Jaran Walia and Rajkumar Narendra who both come from Binus International, took second and third place. The best overall speaker of the tournament was Imran Rahim from National University of Singapore. His teammate Robin Teo was best speaker in the finals.

ABP 2011: NUS Loses Title, Bows to RVCE

North South University Dhaka - Host of ABP 2011

Underdogs Rashtriya Vidyalaya College of Engineering from Bangalore, India denied defending champions National University of Singapore of another Asian British Parliamentary Debating Championship title. In the grand final of the 2011 ABP, #14 RVCE 1 (Karthik Sivaram & Prasun Bhaiya) from the position of Opening Opposition knocked down the motion "This House Believes That Micro-Credit Programs Should Stop Exclusively Targeting Women".

#1 NUS 1 (Imran Rahim & Robin Teo), playing the role as Closing Opposition, failed to outshine their benchmates. The other finalists came from Nanyang Technological University and Universiti Teknologi Mara. NUS 1 were hot favourites throughout ABP 2011. The team broke first into knockouts with Imran topping the speaker tab and Robin coming second. No RVCE debater was on the top 10 speaker list. This is the first major Asian-level victory for RVCE.

IVED 2012 Organizers Announce Main List of Teams

Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang, the host of the 2012 Indonesian Varsities English Debate, will give teams on the main list time until December 30 to settle payment before allowing others to take over their spots. ABP 2011: Binus International is Next Year's Host

Binus International won the bid to host the 2012 Asian British Parliamentary Debating Championships after its sole rival from India backed out. It will be the first time for Jakarta to host an Asian-scale major debating tournament. The only time an Indonesian institution held such an event was in 2007 when Institut Teknologi Bandung organized that year's Asian Universities Debating Championships.

ABP 2011: NUS to Defend Crown, Bryan on Final Panel

Reigning champion National University of Singapore will defend its Asian British Parliamentary Debating Championship title tomorrow against teams from cross-city rival Nanyang Technological University, Malaysia's Universiti Teknologi Mara and Rashtriya Vidyalaya College of Engineering from India. NUS 1 broke first in the 2011 Asian BP at Dhaka's North South University. Bryan Gunawan from Binus University will be on the grand final adjudication panel.

ABP 2011: Singapore, Malaysia Teams Flood Knockouts

After 6 preliminary rounds, 24 teams earned the right to proceed into the knockouts of the 2011 Asian British Parliamentary Debating Championship at Dhaka's North South University. The top 8 can go straight to the quarterfinals while the remaining 16 must undergo pre-quarters. No Indonesian team managed to advance while Singaporean and Malaysian teams took the top 8 spots.

ABP 2011: Motions on Day 2

The 2011 Asian British Parliamentary Debating Championship ran 4 rounds today to ensure the break can be announced tonight. Motions on Day 2 of debates are as follows:

ABP2011: Tab Problems Push R3 to Day 2

Tabulation issues marred the first day of debating at the 2011 Asian British Parliamentary Debate Championship, forcing organisers at Dhaka's North South University to drop a scheduled round. The third preliminary will now take place tomorrow before 3 other rounds so that the break announcement can still proceed on time. This year's ABP has 76 teams, including those from Binus International and Institut Pertanian Bogor.

Regime Change at Powerhouses UI and Binus International

The two most successful competitive debating institutions in Indonesia this year, the English Debating Society Universitas Indonesia (EDS UI) and the Binus International Pool of English Debaters (BIPEDS), recently changed leadership. EDS UI President Ahdiat Permana, who himself won 2 of his organization's 6 trophies this year, passed the baton on Saturday to Aulia Anggita Larasati, a sophomore who reached the semifinals of JOVED 2011 on her first try. A few days earlier at BIPEDS, NUEDC and English Fiesta 2011 champion Astrio Feligent Tjong became captain replacing Invi Atmanegara, whose tenure boasted 3 tournament victories. No other debating outfit in Indonesia bagged more than 2 championships in 2011.

DOTY 2011 Nears End with All-Male Top 10

Roderick Sibarani from Universitas Indonesia and Rifan Ibnu Rahman from Institut Teknologi Bandung are leaving the others behind in IndoDebate's Debater of the Year table as 2011 reaches its last month. The latest list incorporated results from 3 competitions in November with national appeal -- EU-IDC, Progressive, and Founders Trophy. There were other tournaments that occurred in Indonesia last month but they did not reach out from the host city, rendering them as local comps.

Roderick not only won Progressive, his third trophy in 2011, but also topped the speaker tab. No other debater has won more than 2 trophies this year. Rifan holds another record after he made it to the last debate of FT. It was his sixth grandfinal appearance this year and he is alone with that feat. But, like his 4 other penultimate debates, it ended without a victory. Non-student debaters championed that comp and swamped the top end of the individual list.
