IVED 2014: UGM Wins National Title, UI Loses 4th Straight Final

IVED 2014 Champs - UGM A (Alif Satria, Indriani Pratiwi, Romario Tambunan)

#1 Universitas Gadjah Mada A (Alif Satria, Indriani Pratiwi, Romario Tambunan) claimed the national 3-on-3 title after defeating #2 Universitas Indonesia A (Magreta Kailla Adenta, Revaldi Wirabuana, Elvia Sumayastra) in the final of the 2014 Indonesian Varsities English Debate through a unanimous decision. UGM's Indriani Pratiwi also bagged the best speaker award while her partners came second and third.

UGM speaker Alif Satria avenged his loss against UI debaters Magreta Kailla Adenta and Elvia Sumayastra who beat him in the final of the 2013 Java Overland Varsities English Debate six months ago. The victory is also the Yogyakarta school's third in IVED after winning the tournament in 2009 and 2011.

For UI, it was the fourth straight IVED final defeat. UI championed the first six IVEDs, as well as, the 2006 and 2008 editions but could not yet clinch a ninth triumph in the most celebrated nationwide debate tournament in Indonesia although showing a strong performance year after year. The consolation this year came from UI freshman Kristi Ardiana who won the best novice speaker award.

The surprise package in IVED 2014 came from Universitas Sanata Dharma, another Yogyakarta school but without UGM's notable debating record. Two Sadhar teams advanced into the knockouts, including #4 Sadhar A (Tethy Cahyati Pesoa, Irene Anindiyaputri, Vania Setiowati) after defeating 2 UI teams in the preliminaries. Sadhar debater Irene Anindyaputri emerged as the 4th best speaker, the first time ever a debater from her school slipped into the Top 10 debater list of a major Indonesian debate competition. The Sadhar teams are UGM-trained.

In the novice category, Lampung-based Perguruan Tinggi Teknokrat B (Timotius Immanuel, Zahra Mutiah, Yurisa Yulia Yunara) defeated Universitas Jenderal Soedirman A ( Dendi Liya, Chrisna Gilang, Shella Aliandri) in the final and became the first ever team from Sumatra island to take home a trophy from IVED. Previously, Java-based debaters swept all the accolades.

IVED 2014: UGM, UI Meet Again in the Final Just Like in 2011

Unbeaten #1 Universitas Gadjah Mada A (Alif Satria, Indriani Pratiwi, Romario Tambunan) will go against #2 Universitas Indonesia A (Magreta Kailla Adenta, Revaldi Wirabuana, Elvia Sumayastra) in the final of the 2014 Indonesian Varsities English Debate, the national 3-on-3 championship. Teams from the two state universities met in the 2011 IVED final that ended with the Yogyakarta school emerging as the victor. This year's finalists also clashed in the last preliminary round of IVED 2014, which had the same result as the 2011 final.

The UI debaters, however, are bent on settling the score and giving their school its ninth IVED victory. UI teams championed the first six IVEDs. The last time UI won was in 2008. UI teams fell in the final in the 3 most recent editions. UGM has two IVED trophies in its cabinet. UI, which hosted the first IVED in 1998, will organize the country's most prestigious tournament for the second time next year.

In the final of the novice category, Universitas Jenderal Soedirman A (Dendi Liya, Chrisna Gilang, Shella Aliandri) will face Perguruan Tinggi Teknokrat B (Zahra Mutiah, Timotius Immanuel, Yurisa Yulia Yunara). All finals will take place tomorrow at Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana in Salatiga.    

IVED 2014: Unbeaten UGM Trio Break First, Giant-killing Sadhar in Top 4

Universitas Gadjah Mada A (Alif Satria, Indriani Pratiwi, Romario Tambunan) topped the tab after winning all of their 6 preliminary rounds in the 2014 Indonesian Varsities English Debate. The exact trio won the 2013 ALSA UGM Crushbone Debate in November.  All 3 UGM teams progressed into the knockouts along with 3 teams from rival powerhouse Institut Teknologi Bandung. Fine achievements but not the spectacle of this tournament.

The debaters who are stealing the show come from Universitas Sanata Dharma, a Yogyakarta school that has not won any nationwide competition before. Not only that both of its teams advanced, Sadhar A (Tethy Cahyati Pesoa, Irene Anindyaputri, Vania Setiowati) even came fourth after defeating 2 teams from eight-time IVED champion Universitas Indonesia in the prelims. The last victory denied UI B, a team with three award-winning members, a spot in the octofinals. Last year, a Sadhar team only had a 2-4 record and ended far below the break line. GMDT 2013: Home Team UGM Breaks First with Clean Sheet

#1 Universitas Gadjah Mada A (Nabila Aghniarizqa, Alif Satria, Romario Tambunan) defeated all their opponents in the preliminary rounds to advance first into the octofinals of the inaugural Gadjah Mada Debate Tournament. NUDC 2013: Teknokrat Rule in Sumatra's Region II Stays

STBA Teknokrat (Niko Ginanto & Hari Saputra) continued the foreign language school's reign after topping the 2013 National Universities Debating Championship selection for Region II that covers the provinces of South Sumatra, Lampung, Bengkulu and Bangka-Belitung. In the final, the duo defeated state schools  Universitas Lampung, Universitas Sriwijaya and Universitas Bengkulu. Teknokrat won the title last year.

All four are eligible to advance to the national rounds next week. Besides them, semifinalists STIE Musi Palembang, Politeknik Sriwijaya, Universitas Islam OKI and Universitas Bandar Lampung also qualify for the big event.

E-Fest 2012: Java Teams Swamp Break List

Teams from Java island took all but one spot in the top 16 that broke into the elimination stage of the 2012 E-Fest, Sumatra's British Parliamentary debate competition. The pattern was similar to last year's, showing the gap of quality between Java schools and the rest in Indonesia. Bawor Cup 2012: Binus International Teams Break First, Third

Binus International teams broke first and third into the knockouts of the 2012 Bawor Cup in Purwokerto, riding on their good form that led them to win the EFL category in this year's United Asian Debating Championship. The other promising schools are Universitas Indonesia and Universitas Bakrie. Both schools took 3 spots each in the Bawor quarterfinals. Bawor Cup is an annual BP tournament held by the same organizers behind the recent JOVED. This is the 3rd edition with UI championing the last two. The top team of this event will get a free ticket to debate in the 2012 World Universities Peace Invitational Debate in Malaysia. The main break list looks like this.

NUEDC 2012: UNY Top Novice Group, Win Berlin Ticket

#1Novice Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (Retno Rahma Safitri & Niki Septi Pawestri) won the novice category in the 2012 National Universities English Debating Championship, giving them the right for state funding to go to the World Universities Debating Championship in Berlin. In the final, they defeated non-Java challengers #6Novice Politeknik Ujung Pandang (Furqon Kokoh & Muhammad Rifai)\, #9Novice STBA Teknokrat (Danang & Septian Trisilo) and #10Novice Politeknik Tonggak Equator (Jeffrey Hartanto & Sisca).

Retno Rahma Safitri also became the best novice speaker in NUEDC 2012. She was a member of the UNY team that won the best novice team award in the 2012 Indonesian Varsities English Debate, the national 3-on-3 debating tournament, making her the first person to combine the novice titles of two major competitions in a single year. Kudos also should be given to Jane Revevalin from Institut Teknologi Bandung, who is actually in her first year of debating, for reaching the final of the main category and getting into the overall top 10 speakers. She was not eligible to compete in the NUEDC novice races because she had won a nationwide tournament last April. In NUEDC, the novice category is performance-based and designed exclusively for those who have failed to break in open contest.

The novice category in Indonesia is ill-defined and the rules differ from competition to competition. In NUEDC 2012, novice team Universitas Paramadina (Niken Anjar & Siti Octrina Malikah) wanted to join the main knockouts when the debaters learned they had won enough points to break into the top 32 safely. Unfortunately, the organisers blocked them from competing in the higher category. In NUEDC 2011, novice teams that could break into the main elimination stage were given a choice to stay in the lower category and go for the tougher challenge. Some remained to race for the WUDC ticket but some also went for the chance to debate with better teams. The rule change failed to be communicated. In international competitions like WUDC or Australs, participants from the lower category (ESL/EFL) can automatically compete in the main knockout if they can collect sufficient points for that.  

NUEDC 2012: Novice Finalists Come From 4 Islands

The teams that managed to progress into the novice grandfinal of the 2012 National Universities English Debating Championship hail from different islands. Java's #1 Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta lead the pack, #6 Politeknik Ujung Pandang are Sulawesi's last standing team, reigning novice champion #9 STBA Teknokrat come from Sumatra and Kalimantan has a representative through #10 Politeknik Tonggak Equator. They will fight tomorrow to get the bonus ticket -- a chance to go to the World Universities Debating Championships in Berlin.

ITB Tops Tab in Lampung Debate

Institut Teknologi Bandung (Rifan Ibnu Rahman, Jane Revevalin, Fauzan Reza) broke first in the Politeknik Negeri Lampung debate competition, outclassing the rest of the participants, mostly from Sumatra island. Other Java-based debating powerhouses skipped this tournament. The finals will take place today. The break list is as follows:

IVED 2012: Motions & Some Results from R1

Media-related topics kicked off the 15th Indonesia Varsities English Debate at Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang. R1 started more than an hour late from schedule while until 2 pm R2 motions have not been launched, suggesting R3, the last round of the day, would not end before nightfall. Here are some details from the opening debates.

WUDC 2012: Indonesian Results

The 2012 World University Debating Championships had 17 Indonesian teams. Two of them, University Indonesia C and Sekolah Tinggi Akuntansi Negara A, broke into the EFL semifinals. Roderick Sibarani (UI A) grabbed 2nd best EFL speaker title immediately followed by Ahmad Naufal Dai at 3rd.

Several Indonesian speakers qualified as ESL, a higher category than EFL, including Adlini Ilma Ghaisany (UI A) who was the best among Indonesians. Had she passed the EFL requirement, she would have been the tournament's top  EFL speaker and UI A could have debated in the EFL semifinals. Only those with less than 3 months of living in an English-speaking country during school age or 6 months of studying in an institution where English is the instruction language can qualify as EFL speakers. The ESL threshold is less than 5 years of living in an English-speaking country during school age or studying in institutions where English is the instruction language.

Almost 400 teams or 800 speakers from over 40 countries joined WUDC 2012. The top team on the Open tab scored 23 points while the last breaking pair had 18. The top scoring Indonesian team of all time got 16 points in WUDC 2008. The highest ranked Indonesian team ended at #85 in WUDC 1999. The best Indonesian speaker reached #186 also in WUDC 1999. WUDC 2012: Indonesia Sends Big Contingent, Gets "A" Status

The 2012 World Universities Debating Championships, the most prestigious debating tournament on the planet, officially kicked off today at Manila's De La Salle University with a record-tying number of Indonesian teams. Universitas Indonesia sent the 2 first Indonesian teams to WUDC 1999, coincidentally also held in the Philippines. In WUDC 2005 in Malaysia, there were 17 Indonesian teams, eclipsing the past record by far. When WUDC 2012 debates start tomorrow, the same number will join the competition.

Besides 4 pairs from UI, there will be 2 squads each from Binus University and Universitas Atma Jaya while Binus International, Institut Pertanian Bogor, Institut Teknologi Bandung, Sekolah Tinggi Akuntansi Negara, STBA Teknokrat, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Universitas Negeri Padang, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta and Universitas Padjadjaran respectively sent a team. These institutions had reached a decision to have Bryan Gunawan from Binus University as the Indonesian representative for the Worlds Council.

Bryan today tweeted that Indonesia won the right to earn a "A" nation voting status because there had been at least 4 Indonesian institutions in the last 2 WUDCs. More than 6 Indonesian universities sent teams to WUDC 2010 and 2011. That new status means Indonesia now has 4 votes in the council, which will be crucial in deciding the next host. Up until now, there has been no bids for WUDC 2014 although there is a rumour there might be an audacious attempt to bring the competition to Indonesia in the near future.

Java Teams Rule E-Fest, Sumatra's BP Comp

Only 1 non-Java team, STBA Teknokrat, managed to proceed into the knockouts of E-Fest 2011 in Lampung, Sumatra island's first nationwide British Parliamentary debating competition. The result showed how Java teams are still way ahead debaters from other islands. Twelve teams were eligible to break with the top 4 going straight to the semifinals while the rest must battle it out for the remaining 4 spots. The finals will take place Sunday. 2011 Second Trimester Debate Results

The Ramadan break is over. The Eid holidays and exodus are coming to a close. The new academic year has started. Debating clubs are busy recruiting members and getting ready for the BP season. In a few days, the Harry Potter-themed Just For Fun debates and the Binus International Debating Championship will open the third and last trimester of debating in 2011. Before we get there, let us acknowledge those who achieved success in the varsity and open competitions in Indonesia in the second trimester (May-August).
