DOTY 2014: 2 UGM Debaters Take Turns in Leading Table

Universitas Gadjah Mada debaters Indriani Pratiwti and Romario Tambunan are still leading the 2014 IndoDebate Debater of the Year table after 5 months. They have been in the top three since they combined forces to win the Indonesian Varsities English Debate in January. Indriani bested previous leader Romario in May after reaching the final of the Atma Jaya Intervarsities. The current list also incorporated results from the Climate Change Debate, the English Fiesta competition and the National English-Arabic Olympics. It did not take into account two other competitions that concluded in May due to their limits on participation. The International Humanitarian Law debate only allowed students of International Relations to join while the National Newbies Debate Competition was a novice tournament.

For the first time this year, all top 10 speakers on the list come from the three top powerhouses that are coincidentally the leading state universities in the country - UGM, Universitas Indonesia and Institut Teknologi Bandung. Below is the top end of the DOTY 2014 list as of May. The full list can be accessed here.

1. Indriani Pratiwi (Universitas Gadjah Mada)
2. Romario Tambunan (Universitas Gadjah Mada)
3. Roderick Sibarani (Universitas Indonesia)
4. Vicario Reinaldo (Institut Teknologi Bandung)
5. Magreta Kailla Adenta (Universitas Indonesia)
6. Wida Wahyuni (Universitas Gadjah Mada)
7. Alif Satria (Universitas Gadjah Mada)
8. Aulia Anggita (Universitas Indonesia)
9. Kirana Kania (Institut Teknologi Bandung)
10. Terry Muthahhari (Universitas Indonesia)

Binus Wins Climate Change Debate, UI Keeps Atma IV Title

Atma Jaya IV 2014 Champions - UI A
Binus University (Marchella Febriyanti & Rivera Kathrin) won the 2nd Climate Change Debate Competition this afternoon while a few hours later Universitas Indonesia A (Aulia Anggita & Dennys Kapa) championed the 2nd Atma Jaya Intervarsity. Both British Parliamentary style debate tournaments were held in Jakarta. The clashing date was quite unfortunate as it split the pool of debaters who could compete in the capital.

In CCDC, a debate held by Indonesian government's National Council on Climate Change, Binus outclassed UI B (Reza Mardian & Badai Yuda), Universitas Padjadjaran (Westra Tanribali & Erfan Supradhono) and Universitas Brawijaya (Leiditya Naristi & Fahri Akbar). The tournament did not offer awards for top speakers.

At Atma Jaya, UI A defended the title after defeating Institut Teknologi Bandung (Vicario Reinaldo & Aulia Widyaputra), Universitas Gadjah Mada A (Indriani Pratiwi & Wida Wahyuni) and dark horse Universitas Pelita Harapan (Saagar Teckchandani & Dharma Dwitama). UI's Aulia Anggita topped the individual tab. This is the second trophy for UI in as many weeks. Last week, another UI team won the classic ALSA UI English Competition debate.

Atma Jaya Debaters Excel in Climate Change, Sidoarjo Debates

Debaters from Universitas Atma Jaya came out as winners in two debates yesterday. Cindy Fransisca and Davin Sutanto championed the government-sponsored climate change debate that was conducted in Indonesian language. Meanwhile, another Atma debater Kario Teguh teamed up with his former SMA Tarakanita 2 high schoolmate Patty Regina, who now debates for Universitas Indonesia, and their junior Willem Chua to win the SMASH debate at SMA 1 Sidoarjo.

In Lomba Debat Perubahan Iklim, Atma Jaya defeated teams from Binus University (Fathy Ahmad Ibrahim & Maulana Nofrimurti), Prasetiya Mulya Business School (Raisa Nabila & Aniesha Goeslina) and Universitas Islam Negeri Jakarta (Indra Ramadhan & Ardhy Sitepu). In Sidoarjo, the Tarakanita-connected winning trio that called themselves "PNTM" outclassed a team from Universitas Brawijaya. Patty Regina also topped the speaker tab.
