DOTY 2014: UGM Debaters Flood Top 10 After Busy September

Universitas Gadjah Mada debaters did not only keep the pole position in the 2014 Debater of the Year table but also took the majority of spots in the Top 10 after results from six tournaments in September were added. Six UGM debaters now claim the eight highest ranks of DOTY 2014. Indriani Pratiwi is still leading the pack following her victory in the Bawor Cup. Other UGM speakers received bonus points by reaching the semifinals of the Indonesia Debate Open, which had more international participants than local ones due to the high registration fee. The DOTY table appreciates achievements in open international tournaments. IDO 2014, which had no Indonesian debater in the final, had a definite international flavour.

The other September tournaments that the DOTY calculations considered were the agricultural debate in Bogor, where host Institut Pertanian Bogor pulled off an upset against a highly favoured UGM team, the Just for Fun debate at Universitas Indonesia, the National Debate Competition-National Economic Seminar in Bandung and the debate competition at Universitas Soegijapranata in Semarang.

The only debaters who can spoil the rise of the first DOTY from UGM come from UI and all of them just graduated in August. Graduates still can harvest points if they start the year as a student. It is common practice in the international debating world to give a grace period for such debaters. If these debaters are allowed to compete in the World Universities Debating Championship at the end of the year, DOTY will also count them in. Indeed, the two most recent DOTYs secured the title after they graduated. This year the chance is not as large because there are only two national tournaments left that allow graduates to compete, Ganesha Open and Founders Trophy, and the UGM students are leading the table with a comfortable cushion. It is more likely to see a UGM debater snatch the title considering the available opportunities.

UGM Wins Bawor for First Time, UI Debater Defends JFF Title

#1 Universitas Gadjah Mada (Alif Satria & Indriani Pratiwi) emerged as the winner of the 2014 Bawor Cup. It was the first time for the school to champion Purwokerto's annual debate, which has benefited from its past ties with the World Universities Peace Invitational Debate. WUPID stopped running last year. The winning debaters also came out as co-best speakers of the tournament. In the final on Sunday, they defeated #2 UI, #3 Binus University and host #8 EFEC Universitas Jenderal Soedirman C.

On the same day, Roderick Sibarani from Universitas Indonesia championed the Just For Fun debate for the second time in a row and also took home the funniest speaker award. On Sunday, he won the tournament with Magreta Kailla Adenta who was also his partner during the victorious run in this year's ALSA UI English Competition. JFF 2014 followed the tournament's tradition of having fantasy motions and had topics related to Disney. Magreta also topped the individual tab.

GMDT 2013: Binus International Wins Trophy, Jaran's Fourth This Year

#2 Binus International A (Jaran Walia, Melisa Irene, Yosifebi Ramadhani) defeated home team #1 Universitas Gadjah Mada A (Romario Tambunan, Nabila Aghniarizqa, Alif Satria) to champion the inaugural Gadjah Mada Debating Tournament. They lost to UGM A in the preliminary stage but paid back when it counted most. In the final, they knocked down a proposal for Indonesia to invest in nuclear energy.

It was Jaran Walia's fourth trophy this year, reinforcing his position at the top of the 2013 Debater of the Year table. No other debater has won as many nationwide championships in 2013. The three previous victories came from the Indonesian Varsities English Debate, the National Universities Debating Championship and the Bawor Cup competition.  UGM's Alif Satria bagged the best speaker award, giving the host a consolation prize and making him one of Jaran's closest rivals for the DOTY title.  

NUDC 2013: Can Bina Nusantara Score a Hat-Trick?

Universitas Bina Nusantara, a.k.a. Binus University, which has held the national BP debating title for the last two years, is eying to score a hat-trick at the 2013 National University Debating Championship that starts today.

Binus has an unique arrangement in sending teams to the state-sponsored nationals. Although there are 2 active debating clubs in the Binus University system, the education ministry only allows 1 Binus team each year. The solution is Bina Nusantara English Club (BNEC), which carries the name "Binus" in the debating world, and Binus International Pool of English Debaters (BIPEDS), known as "Binus International" in circuits, have to take turns. BIPEDS won in 2011 while BNEC matched the feat in 2012. The baton has returned to BIPEDS this year. Consisting of members of the squad that won the Indonesian Varsities English Debate last January, the 2013 team look strong.

Without doubt, 95 other teams from all over Indonesia wish to end the Binus reign. What are the odds? Factually, there are only 4 other participating teams that can boast national trophies - only less than 5% of the lot. Due to the single-team cap and the emphasis on geographical spread rather than depth, NUDC is a top-heavy tournament. This year it is compounded by the absence of last year's finalist Universitas Parahyangan, due to academic scheduling conflict, and regeneration issues at several strong clubs that have led to the sending of weaker debaters than before.

This situation also offers opportunity for the rise of dark horses and giant killers as long as debaters can match the quality of the above. There are several universities that are sending three-time veterans of the nationals and some emerging schools  that broke into knockouts of recent tournaments can pull off surprises. Nonetheless, short of a spirited challenge against the favorites, the title would go to one of the 5 teams. 

The first, second and third winners of NUDC 2013 are eligible for funding to go to the 2014 World Universities Debating Championship in India, along with the best team on the preliminary tab. The best novice team will no longer get a WUDC ticket. Without that carrot, there is hope that the regrettable preference to debate in the weaker novice category rather than meet strong teams in the main competition that occurred in past nationals would stop.

DOTY 2013: UI Debaters Climb Up Into Top 10 of July List

Debaters from powerhouse Universitas Indonesia are now in the top 10 of the Debater of the Year list after victories in Java Overland Varsities English Debate and Jakarta Mini in July. UI debaters had a slow start in 2013 and failed to show prominence on the DOTY list for the last few months. They, however, look promising for the tournaments in the second half of the year.

UI's Magreta Kailla Adenta had the steepest climb to #4 from #32 after she bagged the best team and individual titles in JOVED, reached the final in Bawor Cup and broke into the semifinal in Jakarta Mini -- all in a month. Her schoolmate Dennys Kapa is back in top 10 after winning Jakarta Mini with partner Rifan Ibnu Rahman - the 2012 Debater of the Year who graduated from ITB last year.

The table leaders are still Universitas Gadjah Mada debaters Amir Abdul Aziz and Alif Satria who have the same total points. However, #3 Jaran Walia from Binus International is a point away. The only competition that contributed to the DOTY list in June was the International Humanitarian Law debate in Malaysia, which had a team from UGM led by Alif Satria. Their achievement of breaking into the main knockouts earned them bonus points. Results from Indonesia Debate Open and National Universities Debating Championship in August will likely change the composition at the top of the DOTY list.

Bawor Cup 2013: Binus International Wins, Breaks UI Streak

#3 Binus International (Jaran Walia & Melisa Irene) championed the 2013 Bawor Cup, breaking a Universitas Indonesia winning streak that started since the Purwokerto tournament was launched three years ago. It was the institution's second trophy of the year after the victory at the Indonesian Varsities English Debate. Their main prize is a free ticket to compete at the 2013 World Universities Peace Invitational Debate in Malaysia. 

In the last match, the champions defeated #5 UI B (Magreta Kailla Adenta & Sindhu Partomo), #1 Universitas Gadjah Mada A (Amir Abdul Aziz & Nabila Aghniarizqa) and #2 UGM B (Alif Satria & Wida Wahyuni). Jaran Walia, who was part of the triumphant IVED team, did not only shine as the best speaker in the final. He also shared the top individual title with Elghafiky Bimardhika from UI A, who lost in the semifinal. 

Bawor Cup 2013: UGM Teams Lead Break List

Universitas Gadjah Mada teams took the first and second spots after 5 preliminary rounds of the 2013 Bawor Cup in Purwokerto, advancing into the quarterfinals as favourites. For the last 3 years, Universitas Indonesia debaters have always won the tournament that awards the champion with a free ticket to debate in the World Universities Peace Invitational Debate in Malaysia. FT 2012: Battle of Champions Begins Tomorrow

There will only be less than 40 teams that are going to compete in the 2012 Founders Trophy tomorrow but  more than 50 percent of those have at least one member with a championship title or best speaker award, living up to the tournament's reputation as Indonesia's toughest nationwide British Parliamentary debate competition. In most competitions, the share of champions is usually far below that. As a comparison, in the last NUEDC, the largest BP competition in Indonesia, only 6 out of 95 teams, or less than 7 per cent, could boast nationwide accolades when they entered the arena.

This does not mean FT is unfriendly to young, unforeseen debaters. It is still the only nationwide open competition in Indonesia that could be won by a full high school team - SMA Kanisius Jakarta championed FT 2004. It is also a graveyard for many past national champions. Last year, an IVED champion and an ALSA UI winner failed to break. With the intense level of competition, FT is far from predictable. It is still anyone's game with each preliminary round to be crucial because only 16 teams will advance to the knockouts, which means at least 4 past champions won't debate after round 5.

2012 Second Trimester Debate Results

On Saturday, Universitas Indonesia's Just For Fun debates will open the last trimester of varsity debating in 2012 and wake up debaters from almost two months of lull. Debating in Indonesia has been hibernating since mid-July in accordance to Ramadan and the annual school holiday. DOTY 2012: Points from Breaking in International Debate Added

From July, the 2012 IndoDebate Debater of the Year list recognises the achievements of varsity debaters who can break into the main elimination stage of an international competition which has more non-Indonesian teams than the number that can progress into the knockouts. This includes all top-level international championships (WUDC, Australs, UADC, Asian BP) regardless of where they take place and almost all intervarsities held outside Indonesia.

The new feature will not take into account results from Indonesia-based tournaments branding themselves as international but without a number of overseas teams that exceeds the elimination threshold, for example, IPSDC (1 overseas participating team, 8 breaking spots). Such events are considered equal to national debates. ESL/EFL categories of international championships will continue to be valued like national tournaments because the general quality level of these handicapped divisions is not superior to IVED, JOVED or FT.

Debaters who qualify for the new "international break" feature will get 3 points for each time they advance. This is equal to points received for a national championship victory (1 Win, 1 Final, 1 SF). These achievers will continue to collect points if their teams reach the semifinal, final and top honor of the international tournament.

No Indonesian debater had achieved this feat in 2012 until a team from Universitas Indonesia  (Aulia Anggita. Egalita Irfan, Hana Hanifah) broke into the elimination stage of the 2nd Organization for Islamic Cooperation Intervarsity Debate that took place in the first week of July in Malaysia. Several teams had participated in overseas tournaments this year (Canton IV, IHL, UADC, SIDEO, Australs) but none entered the main out rounds other than UI's OIC team. The UI trio fell in the quarterfinals, giving them 3 points for breaking but no more extra team-based credits. Egalita Irfan slipped into the top 10 speakers of the tournament, enabling her to get another point for individual accomplishment. This addition on top of Egalita and Aulia's success in the recent Bawor Cup changed the make up of the leading debaters of the DOTY list.

Bawor Cup 2012: 3 Years Running, 3 Times Title Goes to UI

For the third time in as many years as the Bawor Cup has existed, the trophy went to debaters from Universitas Indonesia who had the position of Opening Opposition in the final. From that charmed role, #2 UI B (Aulia Anggita & Egalita Irfan) last night defeated #4 Universitas Atma Jaya (Cindy Fransisca & Davin Susanto), #7 Universitas Parahyangan (Dwita Aryani & Josefhine Chitra) and schoolmates #5 UI A (Dennys Kapa & Elghafiky Bimardhika) to ensure no other institution can claim to be champions of this Purwokerto-based tournament.

The victory in the 3rd Bawor gave the UI sophomore pair a free ticket to compete in the 2012 World Universities Peace Invitational Debate in Malaysia at the end of the year. This is the second triumph in less than a week for UI after its debaters won the 2012 Java Overland English Debate that also took place in Purwokerto. UI students have won almost all nationwide debating tournaments held in this quaint Central Java town for more than a decade. UI has championed 4 nationwide debates in 2012, besting other Indonesian colleges so far. All victories came in the last 2 months.

Aulia Anggita, who is also the president of UI's English Debating Society, topped the night with the best speaker in the final title. However, the overall top individual award went to Unpar's Dwita Aryani. The BP-style tournament also had a novice category, which was won by Universitas Brawijaya B. The Malang-based team received the right to compete in the Seri Iskandar Debate Open in Malaysia later this month.

Bawor Cup 2012: Two UI Teams in the Final

Reigning champions Universitas Indonesia took half of the 4 spots in the grand final of the 3rd Bawor Cup after winning their semifinal matches today. No other university has won this Purwokerto-based tournament before. #2 UI B (Aulia Anggita & Egalita Irfan) and #5 UI A (Elghafiky Bimardhika & Dennys Kapa) will face two pairs who all reached the grand final of the recent 2012 National Universities English Debating Championship - #4 Universitas Atma Jaya (Cindy Fransisca & Davin Susanto) and #7 Universitas Parahyangan (Dwita Aryani & Josefhine Chitra). The winner of the debate, which is slated for tonight, will receive a free ticket to compete in the World Universities Peace Invitational Debate in Malaysia next December.  

Bawor Cup 2012: Binus International Teams Break First, Third

Binus International teams broke first and third into the knockouts of the 2012 Bawor Cup in Purwokerto, riding on their good form that led them to win the EFL category in this year's United Asian Debating Championship. The other promising schools are Universitas Indonesia and Universitas Bakrie. Both schools took 3 spots each in the Bawor quarterfinals. Bawor Cup is an annual BP tournament held by the same organizers behind the recent JOVED. This is the 3rd edition with UI championing the last two. The top team of this event will get a free ticket to debate in the 2012 World Universities Peace Invitational Debate in Malaysia. The main break list looks like this.

JOVED 2012: The 16th Edition Kicks Off in Purwokerto

The first debate competition in Indonesia using an internationally accepted format - the Java Overland Varsities English Debate - is back with its 16th edition. Once more, the serene Central Java city of Purwokerto, which hosted the 4th JOVED in 2000, is embracing more than 100 Indonesian debaters who will fight for the title for the next five days. Last year Universitas Diponegoro championed the tournament for the first time without dropping a match. Favourites Universitas Indonesia this year is fielding a team with more than 5 trophies between the members. Purwokerto is where UI  won its first ever JOVED, an event it has not championed since 2009.

The host in 2000, Universitas Jenderal Soedirman, is also responsible for the organization this year and they also have assistance from Jakarta-based Binus University, which just won the National Universities English Debating Championship last week. The debater who was part of that triumphant Binus team, Sabarudin Adinugroho, is the chief adjudicator of JOVED 2012. After JOVED 2012 ends on July 11, the same organizing crew will hold the 3rd Bawor Cup that promises a free ticket to the 2012 World Universities Peace Invitational Debate in Malaysia for the champion.

Bawor Cup 2012 Dates Pushed Back

Organizers of the 2012 Bawor Cup have been forced to change the dates of the BP-style competition from July 4-6 to July 12-15, right after the 16th Java Overland Varsities English Debate, which will take place in the same city of Purwokerto. The decision came after the host university altered its exam schedule, leaving the venue unavailable for extracurricular activities on the original dates.

JOVED, Bawor Cup, IPSDC to Open Registration March 30

Three Indonesian debating competitions will take in potential participants in a few hours. The registration for the 3rd Bawor Cup and the 16th Java Overland Varsities English Debate, which will take place back-to-back from July 4 to 11 at Universitas Jenderal Soedirman, will open as soon it becomes March 30. Bawor, Purwokerto's annual British Parliamentary tournament, will take 40 varsity and high school teams while the cap for JOVED, the country's most prestigious Asians style debate for university students, is set at 60 squads. On the same day, the slots for Jakarta-based London School of Public Relations' International Public Speaker and Debating Competition will become available. While the 3rd Bawor Cup and the 16th Java Overland Varsities English Debate will still take place in Purwokerto in succession, organizers have corrected their dates to July 4-6 for the former and July 7-11 for the latter. Rather than a 11-day debating spree, the two events with different styles will be tightly condensed in one week. Bawor is a British Parliamentary competition that annually pulls nationwide debaters to the southern Java city while JOVED is a classic 3-on-3 championship, the first debating tournament in Indonesia with an internationally accepted format. Purwokerto's Universitas Jenderal Soedirman debaters are the core in the organization of both competitions, which also involve local schools and Jakarta-based Binus University. The JOVED convenor is Unsoed's Arbi Wienandar.

Purwokerto to Host Bawor Cup, JOVED Back-to-Back in July

The quaint Javanese city of Purwokerto will catch debate fever in July when two tournaments are expected to run one after the other without a break. The 3rd Bawor Cup, a British Parliamentary competition, will take place July 1-3 and the next day the 16th Java Overland Varsities English Debate, the pioneer Indonesian debating event using international standards, will proceed for a week, offering 11 days of nonstop intellectual combat in a town more known for its hotsprings. Purwokerto's Universitas Jenderal Soedirman debaters are the core in the organization of both competitions, which also involve local schools and Jakarta-based Binus University.
