ABP 2012: Malaysia Sweeps Half of Break List

Debaters from Malaysia took half of the spots in the elimination round of the 2012 Asian British Parliamentary Debating Championship and two Malaysian teams were unlucky not to be part of that lot. Universiti Teknologi Mara 3 and International Islamic University 5, two teams with scores matching the 24th on the tab from preliminaries, missed the break on head-to-head count with the last advancing pair, their fellow countrymen from Universiti Malaya 1. Only the best 24 teams after 6 preliminary rounds can continue their journey with rank #9 to #24 required to battle it out in pre-quarterfinal matches before winners of that stage face the top 8. The main break list has no Indonesian team as the highest ranked from the host country matched the points of the last three breaking pairs but had lower individual scores.

ABP 2012: Final Confirmations Find 82 Teams Bound for Jakarta

The organisers of the 2012 Asian British Parliamentary Debating Championship made a series of last minute confirmations and found there would be 82 teams competing next month in Jakarta. The tournament, the first ever major international debating event to be held in the Indonesian capital, will take place from October 22 to 27 at Binus University's JWC campus, home to its international programs. Favourites National University of Singapore and International Islamic University Malaysia both will field 5 teams while reigining champions Rashtriya Vidyalaya College of Engineering will be eager to retain the title. The latest team list looks like this.

Chennai Wins Race to Host WUDC 2014

The Indian city of Chennai will be the host of the 2014 World Universities Debating Championships after receiving 55 votes, 19 more than rival Bangkok, in a landmark online voting process.  The main organiser is Chennai-based Rajalakhsmi Engineering College while Rashtriya Vidyalaya Engineering College and the National Law School of India University, both from nearby Bangalore, will officially support the undertaking. Chulalongkorn University was the sole school behind the Bangkok bid.

Indonesia, which holds 4 votes due to its Status A, chose Chennai and became the only Asian nation behind the winning bid outside home country India and its neighbour Pakistan. Other Asian countries, including the sub-continent's Bangladesh, went for Bangkok. Non-Asians overwhelmingly picked Chennai, which promises accommodation in a 7-star hotel and 5 parties with free flowing alcohol. It was the first time that a WUDC host was decided via an online voting. No bid was floored at the 2012 Worlds in Manila, triggering a scramble to find institutions that dare to take on the challenge of organising a tournament that has grown into a increasingly demanding and lavish event in recent years. The two bidding parties, coincidentally all from developing Asian countries, collaborated with award-winning debaters from the first world to table excellent proposals to keep the most prestigious debating tournament on the planet alive. WUDC 2013, which will be held in Berlin, was decided in WUDC 2011 Botswana.

ABP 2012: First List - 1/3 Indonesian, None From the Philippines

One-third of the 84 teams that got into the first main list of the 2012 Asian British Parliamentary Debating Championship come from the host country Indonesia. This is a record showing after previously the number of Indonesian teams that participate in ABP year after year can be counted with one hand. Eleven countries are represented in the roster but there is no team from the Philippines, an Asian debating powerhouse. Nevertheless, the list still looks competitive as all of the 4 universities that reached the grandfinals of ABP 2011 have won slots, including reigning champion Rashtriya Vidyalaya College of Engineering and the formidable National University of Singapore. On the waiting list, there are 2 Filipino schools. Those on the first main list have until June 16 to pay up or they will lose their spots. ABP 2012, organized by Binus International, will take place in Jakarta from October 22 to 28.
