UGM Wins All-Yogyakarta Final in SKEPTIC 2014

Universitas Gadjah Mada 1 (Alif Satria & Kartika Hananto) championed the 2014 SKEPTIC debate after defeating 3 other teams from Yogyakarta, where the event was held. The finalists were Universitas Sanata Dharma 1 (Tethy Pesoa & Sekartiyasa Kusumastuti), Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta 1 (Puguh Hariyanto & Retno Rahma Safitri) and an UGM-Universitas Atma Jaya Yogyakarta hybrid (Meganusa Ludvianto & Gratsia Kancanamaya). Alif Satria also topped the speaker tab.

Although SKEPTIC was billed as nationwide, no strong participant from out of the city showed up largely due to the competition's clash with the 2014 ALSA UI E-Comp, the country's longest running English debate tournament, which started on Friday.   

WUDC 2014: Indonesian Results

The 2014 World Universities Debating Championships in Chennai provided a high and a low for Indonesian debating. For the first time, a team from Indonesia grabbed a WUDC trophy after Institut Teknologi Bandung A (Vicario Reinaldo & Fauzan Reza Maulana) beat their opponents in the final of the English-as-Foreign-Language category,  putting our country on the map. They made all Indonesian debaters proud and showed that excellence on the world stage is very possible to attain.

However, WUDC 2014 also had a low point. Musamus University A from Papua became the worst team of the tournament with zero points after getting the 4th rank in all 9 preliminary matches. This was the first time an Indonesian team left WUDC pointless. The debaters also populated the floor of the tab with one of them scoring as low as 54 in a debate. This underlines how lack of preparation and involvement in the domestic circuit can spell disaster in an international competition.

Besides these two contrasting teams, there were nine other Indonesian pairs. Universitas Gadjah Mada A (Amir Abdul Aziz & Nabila Aghniarizqa) like ITB A also broke into the EFL knockouts. National champions Binus International A (Jaran Walia & Invi Atmanegara) along with 2 teams from Universitas Indonesia actually scored higher than UGM A and ITB A but they could not progress after the prelims because they were considered as English-as-Second-Language teams and failed to gather enough points to break into the ESL elimination stage. 

Only those with less than 3 months of living in an English-speaking country during school age or 6 months of studying in an institution where English is the instruction language can qualify as EFL speakers. The ESL threshold is less than 5 years of living in an English-speaking country during school age or studying in institutions where English is the instruction language.

Outside the historic ITB victory in the EFL category, other Indonesian records stay intact. The top scoring Indonesian team of all time gathered 16 points in WUDC 2008. The highest ranked Indonesian team ended at #85 in WUDC 1999. The best Indonesian speaker reached #186 also in WUDC 1999. The WUDC 2014 Indonesian debaters failed to best these stats. Interestingly, the highest ranked Indonesian speaker comes from a foreign school. It was Stevensen Chen, a former Medan high school debater who now studies at Hitotsubashi University in Japan. The detailed results of the Indonesian teams are as follows.

WUDC 2014: 11 Indonesian Teams Compete in the Most Prestigious Debate

The preliminary rounds of the 2014 World Universities Debating Championships began today in Chennai, India with 11 teams from Indonesia, including a pair from remote Papua province. They are as follows:

While no Indonesian has broken into the main knockouts of the most prestigious debate competition on the planet, some have advanced into the ESL/EFL elimination stage. As usual, there will be 9 mandatory rounds at WUDC. The best Indonesian team in terms of score were Astrid Kusumawardhani and Miranda Anwar from UI with 16 points in WUDC 2008. They broke first into the ESL knockouts that year. Let's see whether the WUDC 2014 teams can match that feat or break the record.      

GMDT 2013: Home Team UGM Breaks First with Clean Sheet

#1 Universitas Gadjah Mada A (Nabila Aghniarizqa, Alif Satria, Romario Tambunan) defeated all their opponents in the preliminary rounds to advance first into the octofinals of the inaugural Gadjah Mada Debate Tournament. All three are also well-positioned in the top 10 speaker list. The elimination stage will go until the quarterfinals today. The grand final will take place tomorrow. Here is the break list.

NUDC 2013: Yogyakarta Region Title Goes to UGM Again

Universitas Gadjah Mada (Amir Abdul Aziz & Nabila Aghniarizqa) proved to be the king of Yogyakarta debating again after winning the Region VII selection of the 2013 National Universities Debating Championships for the third time in a row. In the final, they outclassed cross-town opponents Universitas Atma Jaya Yogyakarta, Universitas Ahmad Dahlan and Universitas Sanata Dharma.

The division of the regions follows the Kopertis system, which is the way private Indonesian universities are regionally monitored. Each of the 12 regions can send the best 8 teams to the nationals, which will have 96 squads -- 192 debaters and 96 N1 adjudicators. All schools that reach the regional semifinals are eligible to advance to the main championship next month. Besides the 4 schools above, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta, Universitas Islam Indonesia, Sekolah Tinggi Bahasa Asing LIA and Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta will also go to the nationals representing the small but university-packed region.

NNDC 2013: UGM Teams Lead Break List, UI Struggling

Universitas Gadjah Mada teams broke first and second in the 2013 National Newbie Debating Competition while reigning champions Universitas Indonesia struggled to replicate last year's dominance. UI squads were unstoppable in the inaugural 2012 edition, taking the first three team and individual awards, but only one team could break this time while another failed to make the cut. AEO 2013: Title Returns to ITB After a Year Abroad

Institut Teknologi Bandung C (Fauzan Reza Maulana & Vicario Reinaldo) won the final debate in the 2013 Asian English Olympics, bringing back the trophy to their school after a year in the hands of National University of Singapore debaters. ITB championed AEO 2011 but failed to win last year's final. NUS did not participate in this year's edition, which only had 3 overseas teams.

#7 ITB C from Opening Government yesterday successfully defended the motion "This House Would Financially Incentivise Hollywood Movie Makers to Make Films That Portray Islam Positively" and defeated #1 Binus International (Jaran Walia & Melisa Irene), #3 Universitas Indonesia B (Dennys Kapa & Terry Muthohhari) and #4 Universitas Atma Jaya Jakarta (Davin Sutanto & Kario Teguh).

ITB took home the best speaker award in AEO 2011 and 2012 but this time Jaran Walia from Binus International topped the individual tab, edging out ITB's Fauzan Reza Maulana who was among the four speakers on second spot. In the novice class, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta B (Arif Burhanuddin & Egie Danarko) took the title, making the school a specialist in this category. UNY won novice team awards in the 2012 Indonesian Varsities English Debate and National Universities English Debating Championship. Alyssa Encarnacion, a Miriam College High School debater from the Philippines whose team went all the way to the main semifinal, was the best novice speaker.

WUDC 2013: Indonesian Results

The 2013 World Universities Debating Championships had 10 Indonesian teams. Two of them, Universitas Gadjah Mada A and Universitas Atma Jaya A, broke into the EFL quarterfinals. Several Indonesian speakers qualified as ESL, a higher category than EFL, including Reza Aryani (UI A) who was the best among Indonesians. Had she passed the EFL requirement, UI A would have been the tournament's top  EFL team, earning them a spot in the elimination phase. Almost 400 teams or 800 speakers from over 40 countries joined WUDC 2013. The top team on the Open tab scored 24 points while the last breaking pair Monash University B, which eventually became the champions, had 17. WUDC 2013: Indonesian Teams Still in Contention After R6

Results after R6 of the 2013 World Universities Debating Championships, released by the organisers, show several Indonesian teams still have the hope to break into elimination stage, including in the open competition. With the new 48-team break system, teams with 17 points after 9 rounds may have a chance to advance into the main knockouts. Last year, teams with 15 points could make the cut for the ESL quarterfinals while a squad had to possess 13 points to safely break in the EFL category. The expansion from 8 to 16 teams that can break in the EFL group this year may give teams with 11 points a shot while the ESL bar stays the same.

No Indonesian has broken into the main WUDC out rounds or reached the top 48 team list. The only time Indonesians got an under-100 rank was in 1999 when the UI pair of Ria Nuri Dharmawan and Puguh "Pupung" Priambodo ended at #85 during the country's first foray in Worlds. Ria now is a World Bank lawyer while Pupung is a diplomat. Last year, another UI duo (Ahmad Naufal Dai & Irene Severina) broke 1st in the EFL category with 14 points while a team from Sekolah Tinggi Akuntansi Negara (Teddy Triatmojo & Halim Nuswantoro) came 8th with 13 points but both fell in the semifinals.

WUDC 2013: 11 Indonesian Teams Ready for Berlin Worlds

Eleven teams from Indonesia will be part of the 800 debaters from all around the globe who are going to compete in the 2013 World Universities Debating Championships in Berlin this week. Some of them have WUDC experience while some have never debated abroad before. One team --Cindy Fransisca & Davin Susanto from Universitas Atma Jaya-- will debate under the name "Dikti Indonesia", the government unit that is sponsoring them. No Indonesian team has broken into the main WUDC elimination stage.

The highest an Indonesian team could reach was #85 in 1999. Since the introduction of ESL/EFL categories in WUDC, 11 Indonesian teams, 8 of them from Universitas Indonesia, have broken into the knockouts of these secondary levels.

PimNas 2012: UGM Teams Break First and Second

Universitas Gadjah Mada fielded their top debaters in the 2012 National English Education Debate, which is part of the annual National Science Week or popularly known as Pimnas, and took the two top spots on the preliminary tab, opening the chance for an all-UGM final. Other universities chose to send their strong teams to the 2012 Java Overland Varsities English Debate that is going on at the same time. Universitas Indonesia, for instance, sent freshmen debaters in one team (UI A) and English literature students without debating experience in another (UI B) to Pimnas, known more as an event for Indonesian students to showcase their scientific research.

NUEDC 2012: The Original Top 32 Teams

The full tabulation report of the 2012 National Universities English Debating Championship is out. The team tab showed the real top 32 teams were different than the ones that debated in the main knockouts. Some who managed to get into the top 32 did not break, giving chance to lower teams to slip into the octofinals.

Serang-based Universitas Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa (Rezza Brammadita & Mita Puspitasari), which achievements had not caught much attention before and failed to pass the regionals last year, performed very well last week and reached as high as #9, right beneath the favourite 8 teams. However, they were disqualified because one of the debaters, Mita Puspitasari, was a substitute. Ironically, on the speaker tab, her scores were attributed to Nur Latifah, the debater she replaced, who was in Jakarta for a different kind of debate while the Bali NUEDC was underway. The government-run NUEDC bans subtitution. This rule also made strong favourites Universitas Bakrie miss the nationals.

Universitas Paramadina (Siti Octrina Malikah & Niken Anjar Wulan), a school which had never competed in NUEDC before, proved newcomers could excel in NUEDC by collecting enough points to reach #18. As first-timers, Paramadina naturally signed up as novice but when the pair heard teams that they defeated in the preliminaries broke, they believed they had the right to compete in the main knockouts. Their complaints and request to debate in the higher class landed on deaf ears as organisers denied them automatic entrance. Last year, novice teams that were eligible to break into the main knockouts could choose between the two categories. In major international tournaments with multiple categories, any team from the lower category that can break into the open knockouts would be given a chance to do so. In NUEDC 2012, organisers condemned novices to the lower class without opportunity to graduate even if they had passed the cut. A member of the adjudication core said it was the responsibility of teams to clearly state which category they wish to enter. Unlike international major tournaments, automatic graduation does not apply in NUEDC.

Eventual novice champions Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta, STMIK Mikroskil, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional, Universitas Muhammadiyah Gresik, Politeknik Negeri Ujung Pandang and Universitas Internasional Batam were also missing in the main knockouts although they got into the top 32 teams. All of them registered as novices and intended to only debate in the lower category, which gave easier access to prizes, including funding for the next World Universities Debating Championship.

The list also shows all participants from Region 3 (Greater Jakarta) were strong enough to enter the top 32 while no team from Region 11 (Kalimantan) and Region 12 (Eastern Indonesia) managed to get into that zone. Without training changes in those regions, the pattern might continue next year.

NUEDC 2012: UNY Top Novice Group, Win Berlin Ticket

#1Novice Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (Retno Rahma Safitri & Niki Septi Pawestri) won the novice category in the 2012 National Universities English Debating Championship, giving them the right for state funding to go to the World Universities Debating Championship in Berlin. In the final, they defeated non-Java challengers #6Novice Politeknik Ujung Pandang (Furqon Kokoh & Muhammad Rifai)\, #9Novice STBA Teknokrat (Danang & Septian Trisilo) and #10Novice Politeknik Tonggak Equator (Jeffrey Hartanto & Sisca).

Retno Rahma Safitri also became the best novice speaker in NUEDC 2012. She was a member of the UNY team that won the best novice team award in the 2012 Indonesian Varsities English Debate, the national 3-on-3 debating tournament, making her the first person to combine the novice titles of two major competitions in a single year. Kudos also should be given to Jane Revevalin from Institut Teknologi Bandung, who is actually in her first year of debating, for reaching the final of the main category and getting into the overall top 10 speakers. She was not eligible to compete in the NUEDC novice races because she had won a nationwide tournament last April. In NUEDC, the novice category is performance-based and designed exclusively for those who have failed to break in open contest.

The novice category in Indonesia is ill-defined and the rules differ from competition to competition. In NUEDC 2012, novice team Universitas Paramadina (Niken Anjar & Siti Octrina Malikah) wanted to join the main knockouts when the debaters learned they had won enough points to break into the top 32 safely. Unfortunately, the organisers blocked them from competing in the higher category. In NUEDC 2011, novice teams that could break into the main elimination stage were given a choice to stay in the lower category and go for the tougher challenge. Some remained to race for the WUDC ticket but some also went for the chance to debate with better teams. The rule change failed to be communicated. In international competitions like WUDC or Australs, participants from the lower category (ESL/EFL) can automatically compete in the main knockout if they can collect sufficient points for that.  

NUEDC 2012: Novice Finalists Come From 4 Islands

The teams that managed to progress into the novice grandfinal of the 2012 National Universities English Debating Championship hail from different islands. Java's #1 Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta lead the pack, #6 Politeknik Ujung Pandang are Sulawesi's last standing team, reigning novice champion #9 STBA Teknokrat come from Sumatra and Kalimantan has a representative through #10 Politeknik Tonggak Equator. They will fight tomorrow to get the bonus ticket -- a chance to go to the World Universities Debating Championships in Berlin.

NUEDC 2012: Main and Novice Breaking Teams

Universitas Gadjah Mada (Erwina Salsabila & Thoriq Murtadho) broke first into the knockouts of the 2012 National Universities English Debating Championship. The top 8 breaking teams  matched the pre-tournament prediction (click here for story) as squads with previous winning experiences stood prominent above the rest. Universitas Hasanuddin (M. Akbar Walenna & Framita Rahman) became the highest ranked non-Java team at #10 and the only one in the top 16. The main elimination stage took in 32 teams while 16 others, led by Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (Niki Septi Pawestri & Retno Rahma Safitri), progressed to the novice knockouts.
