FT2013: Vets Lead Break List That Includes High School Team
Veterans lead the pack at EDSUI Founders Trophy 2013. An alumni team comprising the best speakers of the last two editions, Luthfi Abdurrahman (2012) and Melanie Tedja (2011), broke first with a score of 13 after losing points in the final prelim. The dark horses in the outrounds are high school students John Amadeo and Bradley Gunawan who broke #13 above more experienced debaters. The ones who were cut included a national BP champion, a JOVED champion and two IHL champions. The break list is as follows.

NUDC 2013: STIKES Bali Champions Region VIII
Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Kesehatan Bali, the host of last year's nationals, won the 2013 National Universities Debating Championship selection for Region VIII, which covers the provinces of Bali, West Nusa Tenggara and East Nusa Tenggara or known as the Lesser Sunda islands. In the final, STIKES Bali (Ida Rastiti & Rosa Tri Anggaraeni) defeated Universitas Udayana, Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha, both also from Bali island, and Universitas Mataram, which is located on neighbouring isle Lombok. All of them are eligible to proceed to the national round next month.

NUEDC Becomes NUDC; Changes Go Beyond New Name
The WUDC ticket for the best novice team was one reason behind a trend among some novice squads in past NUEDCs to forego opportunities to debate in the main elimination round even though they got into the top 32. Many of them preferred to debate in the novice finals where rewards, including a WUDC ticket, were easier to obtain. This practice of sand-bagging made teams ranked lower than those novices able to advance into the main knockouts. The result was the 32 teams in the octofinals were not the actual best 32.
Outside of the WUDC tickets, the reward system will stay the same. All champions and finalists in both categories will receive prize money and trophies while top 10 main and novice speakers will get medals. The definition of novice for NUDC 2013 will be set by the chief adjudicator who has not been chosen yet.
The dates and venue for NUDC are also still unclear. The ministry only gave a rough timeline similar to the one used in recent years. The regionals will take place in May while the national round will be held in June. The division of the regions will continue to follow the Kopertis system, which is the way private Indonesian universities are regionally monitored. Each of the 12 regions will send the best 8 teams to the nationals, which will have 96 squads -- 192 debaters and 96 N1 adjudicators. Participants must be registered in March or April at respective regional offices and substitutions are not allowed. Favourites Universitas Bakrie had to forfeit the national rounds last year after one of the speakers chose to take a scholarship after the regionals.

AEO 2013: Title Returns to ITB After a Year Abroad
| Binus University - Venue of Asian English Olympics |
#7 ITB C from Opening Government yesterday successfully defended the motion "This House Would Financially Incentivise Hollywood Movie Makers to Make Films That Portray Islam Positively" and defeated #1 Binus International (Jaran Walia & Melisa Irene), #3 Universitas Indonesia B (Dennys Kapa & Terry Muthohhari) and #4 Universitas Atma Jaya Jakarta (Davin Sutanto & Kario Teguh).
ITB took home the best speaker award in AEO 2011 and 2012 but this time Jaran Walia from Binus International topped the individual tab, edging out ITB's Fauzan Reza Maulana who was among the four speakers on second spot. In the novice class, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta B (Arif Burhanuddin & Egie Danarko) took the title, making the school a specialist in this category. UNY won novice team awards in the 2012 Indonesian Varsities English Debate and National Universities English Debating Championship. Alyssa Encarnacion, a Miriam College High School debater from the Philippines whose team went all the way to the main semifinal, was the best novice speaker.

IVED 2013: Fresh Brawijaya v Bipeds & Classic UI v UGM in SF
Two fresh institutions represented in the semifinals of the 2013 Indonesian Varsities English Debate have never reached the grandfinal before, let alone winning the title. But only one of them will set a record as they will meet each other tomorrow. The other match is a classic showdown of the country's powerhouses.
In the first semifinal, darkhorse #5 Universitas Brawijaya A (Nur Rizki Oceano, Zelly Sidi Zamzami, Queentries Regar) will face #1 Binus International A (Invi Atmanegara, Jaran Walia, Andrew Sadeli), a team with three trophies combined, including the ESL title from the 2012 United Asian Debating Championships. Brawijaya is an old player in Indonesian debating that reached the semifinals in the 2nd IVED in 1999 but in recent years its national achievements have been scarce. The latter debaters, despite their past triumphs, come from a club that only emerged less than five years ago but rapidly rose with support from foreign coaches. Teams from Binus International Pool of English Debaters (Bipeds) have won NUEDC and other domestic tournaments but still have no trophy from Indonesia's three classics -- IVED, JOVED, ALSA UI.
In the other semifinal, #2 Universitas Indonesia A (Dennys Kapa, Magreta Kaila Adenta, Revaldi Wirabuana) will face #3 Universitas Gadjah Mada B (Amir Abdul Aziz, Erwina Salsabila, Romario Tambunan). UI has won IVED eight times while UGM twice. Their showdowns at end rounds of national tournaments have been frequent and usually highly spirited.
IVED is the national 3-on-3 championships. It is the first truly nationwide tournament using an internationally accepted format. Winners are considered the best of their generation. Last year, cinderella team Universitas Bakrie defeated UI in the final. This year, Bakrie failed to break.

IVED 2013: Brawijaya Among Undefeated Teams After R3
The first half of the preliminaries at the 2013 Indonesian Varsities English Debate ended today with several teams still undefeated after 3 rounds. Almost all of them come from schools that have won at least one of Indonesia's 4 major nationwide tournaments. The exception is Universitas Brawijaya A (Nur Rizki Oceano, Queentries Regar, Zelly Sidi Zamzami) from Malang. While Brawijaya is an old player in Indonesian debating and has won many tournaments within East Java province, the school has no IVED, JOVED, ALSA UI or NUEDC title to boast yet. It is too early to say whether this dark horse's run can last but they defeated the B team of favourites Binus International in R3, showing some promise.
The other undefeated teams are: Binus International A, Binus University A, Institut Teknologi Bandung C, Universitas Gadjah Mada A & B, Universitas Indonesia A & B. All participating institutions have at least one team with a loss so far, including the C teams of powerhouses UI and UGM. There will be 3 more rounds tomorrow before the break anouncement. It is still anyone's game as usually only teams with 4 wins after 6 rounds have the chance to make the cut.

Rifan Ibnu Rahman is IndoDebate's Debater of the Year 2012
![]() |
| Rifan Ibnu Rahman - DOTY 2012 |
His last stamp was championing the most competitive open tournament in Indonesia, the Founders Trophy, last November. The gap with his nearest rival, Invi Atmanegara from Binus International, was 11 points, showing how the race was not close. Her success in breaking into the knockouts of the 2012 World Universities Peace Invitationational Debate in December gained her points but it was far from enough to oust the leader.
The one thing that may be a miss in his otherwise long list of accolades is the inability to win any of the four major tournaments in Indonesia - IVED, JOVED, ALSA UI and NUEDC - in his undergraduate phase. It will not be a surprise if he decides to return as a postgraduate debater to close that void. His DOTY 2012 prize is a one-year long subcription of Bloomberg Businessweek magazine, which suits well for a business school graduate who is now working for consumer giant Unilever.
The final DOTY 2012 table shows the classic domination of institutions from the Jakarta-Depok-Bandung axis in Indonesian debating. There is only one debater from out of that group in the top 20 while in that same batch there are 6 people from Universitas Indonesia alone. The highest non-Java debater is at #67. This shows that debate proliferation, while it has made gains in quantity and outreach, needs to focus more on improving institutions out of the axis.
It should be noted that many of the top debaters did not originate from the western Java region. Rifan went to high school in Sidoarjo, East Java while the third on the table, Universitas Indonesia's Dennys Kapa, hails from Kupang on Timor island. Their backgrounds did not handicap them. Their hardwork and the supporting environment in their universities made them champions. Click here for the full table.
Top 20 on IndoDebate's Debater of the Year 2012 list are:
- Rifan Ibnu Rahman (Institut Teknologi Bandung)
- Invi Atmanegara (Binus International)
- Dennys Kapa (Universitas Indonesia)

FT 2012: UI-ITB Hybrid Dai-Rahman Wins in Second Attempt
![]() | ||
| Rifan Ibnu Rahman & Ahmad Naufal Dai |
In the final, they spoke as Opening Opposition and knocked down the motion "This House condemns the push for an international protocol against blasphemy", which was proposed by #1 Muhammad Pandu/Luthfi Abdurrahman, ITB graduates who championed NUEDC in 2009. The closing teams were #2 Ahdiat Permana/Roderick Sibarani, students of UI's economics faculty, and Dimas Hokka/Riza Aryani who grabbed the Australs ESL title for UI last year. It was the third time in a row that the FT champions were debaters from OO in the final.
The best speaker award went to Luthfi Abdurrahman who became the only male debater who has topped the FT individual tab twice. He also took home three books after getting the highest score in three separate rounds. FT motions derive from books donated by UI alumni, which will later go to the best performance in that round. The other books also went to speakers associated with Bandung universites. His partner Muhammad Pandu bagged two and so did Dwita Aryani from Universitas Parahyangan. The best speaker in the final was Rifan Ibnu Rahman who has topped the IndoDebate Debater of the Year list for almost the entire year.
FT also gives out prizes to novices without prior varsity BP debating experience. This year, the best novice speaker title went to Ibrahim Hanif from Universitas Gadjah Mada who reached all the way to the semifinal with his veteran partner. ITB freshmen pair Aulia Widyaputra & Muhammad Lutfi won the best novice team award.
FT is an annual tournament held by English Debating Society UI, the pioneer of competitive debating in Indonesia. FT organisers are always new EDSUI recruits with supervision from seniors and support from the alumni corps.

NUEDC 2009 champions Muhammad Pandu and Luthfi Abdurrahman, who recently graduated from Institut Teknologi Bandung, won the first three books up for grabs in the 2012 Founders Trophy today. The best speaker of each round in FT gets a book from which the motion is taken from. Uphie grabbed the R1 and R3 books while Pandu was top speaker in R2. The pair had the perfect score of 9 points entering R4. Four preliminary rounds took place today but R4 results were not announced. R5 will run tomorrow morning before three knockout rounds.

FT 2012: Battle of Champions Begins Tomorrow
There will only be less than 40 teams that are going to compete in the 2012 Founders Trophy tomorrow but more than 50 percent of those have at least one member with a championship title or best speaker award, living up to the tournament's reputation as Indonesia's toughest nationwide British Parliamentary debate competition. In most competitions, the share of champions is usually far below that. As a comparison, in the last NUEDC, the largest BP competition in Indonesia, only 6 out of 95 teams, or less than 7 per cent, could boast nationwide accolades when they entered the arena.
This does not mean FT is unfriendly to young, unforeseen debaters. It is still the only nationwide open competition in Indonesia that could be won by a full high school team - SMA Kanisius Jakarta championed FT 2004. It is also a graveyard for many past national champions. Last year, an IVED champion and an ALSA UI winner failed to break. With the intense level of competition, FT is far from predictable. It is still anyone's game with each preliminary round to be crucial because only 16 teams will advance to the knockouts, which means at least 4 past champions won't debate after round 5.

Bawor Cup 2012: Two UI Teams in the Final
Reigning champions Universitas Indonesia took half of the 4 spots in the grand final of the 3rd Bawor Cup after winning their semifinal matches today. No other university has won this Purwokerto-based tournament before. #2 UI B (Aulia Anggita & Egalita Irfan) and #5 UI A (Elghafiky Bimardhika & Dennys Kapa) will face two pairs who all reached the grand final of the recent 2012 National Universities English Debating Championship - #4 Universitas Atma Jaya (Cindy Fransisca & Davin Susanto) and #7 Universitas Parahyangan (Dwita Aryani & Josefhine Chitra). The winner of the debate, which is slated for tonight, will receive a free ticket to compete in the World Universities Peace Invitational Debate in Malaysia next December.

Fourth Victory in 2012 Puts DOTY Leader Far From Pack
Rifan Ibnu Rahman from Institut Teknologi Bandung has collected twice more points than his closest rival on the Debater of the Year 2012 table, making it almost impossible for anyone to take over his lead. His fourth and latest victory in 2012 came from the International Public Speaking and Debate Competition at Jakarta-based London School of Public Relations where he defeated a team from Asian powerhouse National University of Singapore.
The 2012 National Universities English Debating Championship was the other contributor to the current table. Their ability to win the country's largest competition has propelled champions Rosmiyana and Sabarudin Adinugroho from Binus University into the table's top ten. For the first time, 4 occupiers of the top ten come from the Binus family of schools. The two others, Invi Atmanegara and Jaran Walia from Binus International, got there after taking the EFL title at the 2012 United Asian Debating Championship in May.
The top 10 on the DOTY 2012 list as of June are:
1. Rifan Ibnu Rahman (Institut Teknologi Bandung)
2. Aryo Febrian (Universitas Bakrie)
3. Invi Atmanegara (Binus International)
4. Rosmiyana (Binus University)
5. Jane Revevalin (Institut Teknologi Bandung)
6. Cindy Fransisca (Universitas Atma Jaya)
7. Jaran Walia (Binus International)
8. Sabarudin Adinugroho (Binus University)
9. Mutiara Hapsari (Universitas Bakrie)
10. Nabila Aghniarizqa (Universitas Gadjah Mada)

JOVED 2012: The 16th Edition Kicks Off in Purwokerto
The first debate competition in Indonesia using an internationally accepted format - the Java Overland Varsities English Debate - is back with its 16th edition. Once more, the serene Central Java city of Purwokerto, which hosted the 4th JOVED in 2000, is embracing more than 100 Indonesian debaters who will fight for the title for the next five days. Last year Universitas Diponegoro championed the tournament for the first time without dropping a match. Favourites Universitas Indonesia this year is fielding a team with more than 5 trophies between the members. Purwokerto is where UI won its first ever JOVED, an event it has not championed since 2009.The host in 2000, Universitas Jenderal Soedirman, is also responsible for the organization this year and they also have assistance from Jakarta-based Binus University, which just won the National Universities English Debating Championship last week. The debater who was part of that triumphant Binus team, Sabarudin Adinugroho, is the chief adjudicator of JOVED 2012. After JOVED 2012 ends on July 11, the same organizing crew will hold the 3rd Bawor Cup that promises a free ticket to the 2012 World Universities Peace Invitational Debate in Malaysia for the champion.

The team tab showed the real top 32 teams were different than the ones that debated in the main knockouts. Some who managed to get into the top 32 did not break, giving chance to lower teams to slip into the octofinals.
Serang-based Universitas Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa (Rezza Brammadita & Mita Puspitasari), which achievements had not caught much attention before and failed to pass the regionals last year, performed very well last week and reached as high as #9, right beneath the favourite 8 teams. However, they were disqualified because one of the debaters, Mita Puspitasari, was a substitute. Ironically, on the speaker tab, her scores were attributed to Nur Latifah, the debater she replaced, who was in Jakarta for a different kind of debate while the Bali NUEDC was underway. The government-run NUEDC bans subtitution. This rule also made strong favourites Universitas Bakrie miss the nationals.
Universitas Paramadina (Siti Octrina Malikah & Niken Anjar Wulan), a school which had never competed in NUEDC before, proved newcomers could excel in NUEDC by collecting enough points to reach #18. As first-timers, Paramadina naturally signed up as novice but when the pair heard teams that they defeated in the preliminaries broke, they believed they had the right to compete in the main knockouts. Their complaints and request to debate in the higher class landed on deaf ears as organisers denied them automatic entrance. Last year, novice teams that were eligible to break into the main knockouts could choose between the two categories. In major international tournaments with multiple categories, any team from the lower category that can break into the open knockouts would be given a chance to do so. In NUEDC 2012, organisers condemned novices to the lower class without opportunity to graduate even if they had passed the cut. A member of the adjudication core said it was the responsibility of teams to clearly state which category they wish to enter. Unlike international major tournaments, automatic graduation does not apply in NUEDC.
Eventual novice champions Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta, STMIK Mikroskil, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional, Universitas Muhammadiyah Gresik, Politeknik Negeri Ujung Pandang and Universitas Internasional Batam were also missing in the main knockouts although they got into the top 32 teams. All of them registered as novices and intended to only debate in the lower category, which gave easier access to prizes, including funding for the next World Universities Debating Championship.
The original top 32 after 7 preliminary rounds in NUEDC 2012 are as follows:
1. Universitas Gadjah Mada (Region 5)
2. Universitas Parahyangan (Region 4)
3. Universitas Indonesia (Region 3)

NUEDC 2012: UNY Top Novice Group, Win Berlin Ticket
#1Novice Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (Retno Rahma Safitri & Niki Septi Pawestri) won the novice category in the 2012 National Universities English Debating Championship, giving them the right for state funding to go to the World Universities Debating Championship in Berlin. In the final, they defeated non-Java challengers #6Novice Politeknik Ujung Pandang (Furqon Kokoh & Muhammad Rifai)\, #9Novice STBA Teknokrat (Danang & Septian Trisilo) and #10Novice Politeknik Tonggak Equator (Jeffrey Hartanto & Sisca).
Retno Rahma Safitri also became the best novice speaker in NUEDC 2012. She was a member of the UNY team that won the best novice team award in the 2012 Indonesian Varsities English Debate, the national 3-on-3 debating tournament, making her the first person to combine the novice titles of two major competitions in a single year. Kudos also should be given to Jane Revevalin from Institut Teknologi Bandung, who is actually in her first year of debating, for reaching the final of the main category and getting into the overall top 10 speakers. She was not eligible to compete in the NUEDC novice races because she had won a nationwide tournament last April. In NUEDC, the novice category is performance-based and designed exclusively for those who have failed to break in open contest.
The novice category in Indonesia is ill-defined and the rules differ from competition to competition. In NUEDC 2012, novice team Universitas Paramadina (Niken Anjar & Siti Octrina Malikah) wanted to join the main knockouts when the debaters learned they had won enough points to break into the top 32 safely. Unfortunately, the organisers blocked them from competing in the higher category. In NUEDC 2011, novice teams that could break into the main elimination stage were given a choice to stay in the lower category and go for the tougher challenge. Some remained to race for the WUDC ticket but some also went for the chance to debate with better teams. The rule change failed to be communicated. In international competitions like WUDC or Australs, participants from the lower category (ESL/EFL) can automatically compete in the main knockout if they can collect sufficient points for that.

NUEDC 2012: National Title Stays in the Binus Family
Last year it was Binus International who won the National Universities English Debating Championship. This year Binus University matched that feat and made sure the title stays in the family. #5 Binus (Rosmiyana & Sabarudin Adinugroho) also won the championship from the same Closing Opposition role. They defeated #2 Universitas Parahyangan (Dwita Aryani & Josefhine Chitra), #6 Institut Teknologi Bandung (Kirana Kania & Jane Revevalin) and #8 Universitas Atma Jaya Jakarta (Cindy Fransisca & Davin Susanto) in a grand final debate that had a motion on giving student loans to Indonesians.
The best speaker of the championship was Riza Aryani from #3 Universitas Indonesia who unfortunately got eliminated in the semifinals. Champions Rosmi and Sabar placed 4th and 6th respectively on the speaker tab. ITB's Jane Revevalin, a first-year debater, got into the overall top 10 speaker list, showing the competition is open for anyone with hard work and skills, regardless of age or years going in and out of tournaments. Jane was not considered as novice because she had won a nationwide tournament last April.

Rosmi and Sabar were also champions of their Jakarta regionals where they had eliminated the same Atma Jaya team in the semifinal level. Both of them have around three years of debating under their belt, including participations in competitions abroad. As a pair, they won the 2010 HOT Magazine Debate competition, a small competition that paved their way for future success, including breaking first in this year's ALSA Unpad E-Challenge. Rosmi was the best speaker in that competition. Sabar will be the Chief Adjudicator of the 2012 Java Overland Varsities English Debate next month.
Binus International did not participate in NUEDC this year. The state-run competition only allows one representative from the Binus family. As the result, societies in Binus International (BIPEDS) and the regular Binus University (BNEC) take turns to compete in Indonesia's largest debate competition. The three best performers in the main category are eligible for state funding to go to the World Universities Debating Championship. Besides Binus, runner-ups ITB and Atma Jaya will go to Berlin for free. For BNEC, this is the first major victory since they won the Java Overland Varsities English Debate back in 2003.

NUEDC 2012: Bandung v Jakarta in Final
Bandung and Jakarta contribute two teams each to the grand final of the 2012 National Universities English Debating Championship. #2 Universitas Parahyangan (Dwita Aryani & Josefhine Chitra) and cross-city rival #6 Institut Teknologi Bandung (Kirana Kania & Jane Revevalin) will be in the last debate along with the capital city's #5 Binus University (Rosmiyana & Sabarudin Adinugroho) and #8 Universitas Atma Jaya Jakarta (Cindy Fransisca & Davin Susanto). Debating powerhouses Universitas Indonesia and Universitas Gadjah Mada fell in the semifinals, which had the motion "This House would abandon the concept of gender".
Binus is the reigning champion although last year's winners come from a different debating society within the educational institution. The current pair topped the Jakarta qualifiers just like Unpar did in the West Java region. ITB's Jane Revevalin is the only fresher debater among the finalists but she has won a nationwide tournament earlier this year. Atma Jaya's Cindy Fransisca is on very good form in 2012. She became best speaker and finalist in IPSDC a few weeks ago, topped the team tab in AEO last February and defeated teams from Asian giants National University of Singapore a number of times in the two tournaments. The final at Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Kesehatan Bali's convention hall will be an exciting end for Indonesia's largest debating competition.
