UADC 2014: No Unbeaten Team After 8 Rounds

All of the 24 teams that are eligible to compete in the main elimination stage of the 2014 United Asian Debating Championships have at least lost once in the preliminaries, indicating the tight competition in Asia's most prestigious tournament. #1 Universiti Teknologi Mara 2 (Maizura Mokhsein, Shafiq Bazari, Rafiq Saladin) broke first with a 7-1 win-loss record after 8 rounds. The knockouts start tomorrow.

UT Mara Wins KL Debate, Binus Intl Debaters Reach QF

Malaysia's Universiti Teknologi Mara A (Shafiq Bazari & Rafiq Saladin) last weekend championed the 2013 Kuala Lumpur Open Challenge, the last Asian preparatory tournament before the 2014 World Universities Debating Championships in Chennai. Three Indonesian teams went to the event, including Binus International B (Invi Atmanegara & Andrianto Khiputra) who broke into the quarterfinals. UT Mara, which will host the 2015 WUDC, also won the MMU IV a week before KLOC.

ABP 2013: EFL Title Slips Away From Indonesia Again, NUS Keeps Trophy

Just like last year, three Indonesian teams reached the final of the English-as-Foreign-Language category of the 2013 Asian British Parliamentary debate tournament and had to beat the only non-Indonesian squad in the room. Unfortunately for Indonesia, history repeated itself -- the odd team won. In 2012, it was Waseda University from Japan. This year Sichuan University from host country China denied the Indonesians - Binus International A (Jaran Walia & Melisa Irene), Binus International B (Andrianto Khiputra & Wilson Salim) and Universitas Indonesia B (Anastasia Sijabat & Magreta Kailla Adenta).

There was some consolation this time, though. Jaran Walia, who has had an amazing debating year, grabbed the best EFL speaker award.  Schoolmates Melisa Irene and Wilson Salim also got into the top 10 EFL speaker list.

In the open category, history also repeated itself. National University of Singapore debaters Kelvin Chong and Xiao Hongyu reclaimed the title that they won last year. In the final, #3 NUS A defeated #1 Universiti Teknologi Mara A (Maizura Mokhsein & Shafiq Bazari), #2 Nanyang Technological University A (Vihasini Gopakumar & Lu Huiyi) and #9 International Islamic University A (Syed Saddiq & Mubarrat Wassey) in a debate with the motion "This House Believes That Military Conscription Should Regarded as a War Crime". For the fourth consecutive time, UT Mara's Mai Mokhsein fell in the grandfinal. Her partner Shafiq Bazari bagged the overall best speaker prize.

UI-ITB Duo Win IDO 2013, Slay NUS Teams Along the Way

The only hybrid team in the final, #9 iBob (Boby Andika Ruitang/UI & Rifan Ibnu Rahman/ITB), championed the 2013 Indonesia Debate Open after outshining #1 National University of Singapore 2 (Bryan Chan & Kenneth Kang), #2 Universiti Teknologi Mara (Mifzal Mohammed & Rafiq Saladdin) from Malaysia, and an Universitas Indonesia team under the codename #7 Just for Fun (Aulia Anggita & Elghafiky Bimardhika) yesterday. The champs also eliminated another team from Asian powerhouse NUS in the semifinals.

For Rifan, who graduated from Institut Teknologi Bandung last year, it was the second victory in as many weeks following the win at Jakarta Mini with another UI debater. He has now won 5 tournaments with an UI partner - each time different. For Boby, who has led dozens of adjudication cores and spoken in numerous tournament out-rounds, this was his first ever trophy as a varsity debater. In the final, the pair knocked down the motion "This House Would Abolish Prisons".

ITB debaters were the happiest last night. On top of Rifan's win, freshmen duo ITB 5 (Midia Arifandi & Dara Indira) won the novice final after beating 2 Universitas Pelita Harapan teams and a pair from Universitas Gadjah Mada.

Organized by Broadway Entertainment, an event organizer known for making music parties, and held at Universitas Trisakti, which has no active debating club, IDO had organizational woes. Less than 40 teams showed up although the cap was set at 100 and organizers had bragged the quota could expand. It was the first Indonesian competition that dared to run a few days before Eid al Fitr, known as the exodus period when most in the world's most populous Muslim country are busy travelling to their hometowns or visiting relatives. A day before the debates, organizers announced discounted registration fees to fill the gaps.

Poor time management also hit IDO. Chronic delays forced debates clashed with Friday prayers and iftar, forcing Muslim debaters to either skip the ritual, leave the chamber before a debate ended, break their fast when a speech was underway or postpone it altogether until their matches finished when organizers failed to provide food on time. On the first day, the committee failed to provide lunch for some of those who were not fasting due to miscalculation. Future Indonesian debate organizers should take some lessons. Basic preparations that consider local situations should be a priority.

On a positive note, IDO attracted strong Asian institutions like NUS and UT Mara and made it possible for Indonesian debaters to get feedback from top-notch judges like Chris Bisset, the Best Speaker of the last World Universities Debating Championships.

UADC 2013: NUS Debaters Top Break List for a Hat-Trick

An undefeated team from regional powerhouse National University of Singapore broke first into the knockouts of the 2013 United Asian Debating Championships in Manila, matching the school's accomplishments in the past two editions of this competition. NUS won the trophy in 2011 but crashed in the semifinals last year.  All three tab-topping NUS teams, including the current one, had star debater Imran Rahim. All of the 16 qualifying teams this year come from either Singapore, Malaysia or the Philippines.  The break list is as follows:

Binus International A (Jaran Walia/Melisa Irene) broke first into the quarterfinals of the 2013 Asian English Olympics, which will also have 3 teams from Universitas Indonesia. No other institution has as many squads in the out rounds as UI. Despite its Asian billing, this year's AEO debate competition only has 3 teams from outside Indonesia - 2 Malaysian universities and a high school pair from the Philippines. UT MARA Wins 2015 Bid, Brings Back WUDC to Malaysia

Universiti Teknologi MARA, Malaysia's largest university by size and population, will hold the 2015 World Universities Debating Championships after grabbing 57 votes, 16 more than its rival from University of Auckland. This will be the second time for Malaysia, which hosted WUDC, the most prestigious debating competition in the world, once before in 2005. WUDC 2015 can also be the biggest ever as the organisers advertise that they may open registration for 440 teams with an institutional cap of 3 teams and 2 adjudicators.


The chief adjudicators will be Jonathan Leader-Maynard, who debated for University of Oxford in the final of WUDC 2010, and Shafiq Bazari from the host institution, finalist of the 1st Asian British Parliamentary Debating Championship, also in 2010. They will have 5 deputies, 4 of them representing specific regions.

The preliminary debates will be held on the university's Shah Alam campus, a 20-minute drive from Kuala Lumpur. UT MARA will also become the venue of the 2013 Australasian Intervarsity Debating Championships. The school has pledged to bear all transport costs within the country and provide air-conditioned rooms for debate purposes free of charge.

ABP 2012: NUS Recovers Trophy, Waseda Beats Indonesians For EFL

The 2012 Asian British Parliamentary Debating Championship, Jakarta's first major international tournament, ended last night with National University of Singapore winning back the trophy that the school won in 2010 and Japan's Waseda University surpassing three Indonesian teams in the EFL final. #1 NUS1 (Kelvin Chong & Xiao Hongyu) from Opening Opposition defeated #2 Korea University 1 (Jeesoo Kang & Jaeyong Shin), #5 Universiti Teknologi Mara (Maizura Mokhsein & Atiqah Zaki) and #7 National Law School of India University 1 (Anil Sebastian & Aniruddha Basu) in the grand final that debated the motion "THBT democratic states should hold a referendum before engaging in a military intervention". NUS championed ABP 2010 and then broke first in ABP 2011 but failed to win the grand final. The debate also produced an interesting fact. For the third consecutive time, UT Mara's Maizura Mokhsein debated in the final as Opening Government and came short from taking the trophy.

In the EFL category, #5 Waseda2 (Junko Nakano & Takenori Hayashi) spoiled the party for Indonesian debaters after outshining #1 Universitas Indonesia 1 (Dennys Kapa & Elghafiky Bimardhika), #3 Binus University (Rosmiyana & Sabarudin Adinugroho) and #6 Universitas Gadjah Mada (Cinantyan Punjung & Wida Wahyuni) in a final that focused on whether the Nobel Peace Prize has lost its purpose. Like the overall champion, the EFL winner debated from Opening Opposition.

The best overall and EFL speakers did not come from the teams above. Syed Saddiq from #8 International Islamic University 1 topped the tab, a consolation for losing in the quarterfinal. Fumihiko Sano from #14 University of Tokyo 1 was the best EFL speaker but his team's break into the main elimination round made him skip the category's separate debates.       

ABP 2012: 4 Nations in Main Final, 3 RI Teams Vie For EFL Title

The grand finalists of the 2012 Asian British Parliamentary Debating Championship for the first time come from 4 different countries. In three past competitions, there were always two teams from a similar nation. #1 National University of Singapore 1, #2 Korea University 1, #5 Universiti Teknologi Mara from Malaysia and #7 National Law School of India University 1 will face off tomorrow in Jakarta for the coveted trophy. It will be the third consecutive final for UT Mara's Maizura Mokhsein. It will also be the first time for a Korean team to appear in the final of an Asian-level championship debate.

In the EFL category, #5 Waseda University 2 from Japan prevented an all-Indonesian final, denying #4 Universitas Parahyangan and #8 Universitas Atma Jaya Yogyakarta from joining their compatriots. The Indonesian teams that will try to keep the trophy from flying away are #1 Universitas Indonesia 1 (Dennys Kapa & Elghafiky Bimardhika), #3 Binus University 1 (Rosmiyana & Sabarudin Adinugroho) and #6 Universitas Gadjah Mada 1 (Cinantyan Punjung & Wida Wahyuni). The ESL final will start mid-day tomorrow at Binus International's JWC campus. Visitors should register beforehand and buy the Rp 50.000/person ticket.  

ABP 2012: Malaysia Sweeps Half of Break List

Debaters from Malaysia took half of the spots in the elimination round of the 2012 Asian British Parliamentary Debating Championship and two Malaysian teams were unlucky not to be part of that lot. Universiti Teknologi Mara 3 and International Islamic University 5, two teams with scores matching the 24th on the tab from preliminaries, missed the break on head-to-head count with the last advancing pair, their fellow countrymen from Universiti Malaya 1. Only the best 24 teams after 6 preliminary rounds can continue their journey with rank #9 to #24 required to battle it out in pre-quarterfinal matches before winners of that stage face the top 8. The main break list has no Indonesian team as the highest ranked from the host country matched the points of the last three breaking pairs but had lower individual scores.

OIC Debate 2012: Main and Indonesian Results

The 2nd Organization for Islamic Cooperation Debating Championship took place in Malaysia earlier this week involving 24 teams from 6 OIC member countries. The host country dominated with teams from Universitas Indonesia and University of Dhaka giving the strongest challenges to the Malaysians. Uniquely, individual awards were given based on gender to the top 3 male and female debaters. UI's Egalita Irfan was the sole debater from outside Malaysia who could break into the top 10 speakers on the tab. She was also the only one leaving Malaysia with an award -- the 2nd best female debater. Key results are as follows:

WUPID 2011: Breaking Teams & Prelim Motions

The 2011 World Universities Peace Invitational Debate organizers announced today the 16 teams that can proceed into the knockouts. Universitas Indonesia and Binus International teams competed in this tournament, which funds the world's top debating universities to come to Malaysia every year, but they failed to break. Bipeds A (Astrio Feligent & Christian Leonardo) came very close with 9 VPs, the same amount of points that #10-16 had. Those who did advance are as follows:
