WUDC 2014: No More "First Come, First Served" Rego, History Affects Slots

Registration for the 2014 World Universities Debating Championships in Chennai will only open for 24 hours from May 20, 2013 at 1000 GMT (1700 WIB) but the allocation won't use the normal "first come, first served" policy. This is good news for Indonesia which has a slow Internet connection. Many from across the globe complained the previous way gave advantage to those with faster services like Western countries and Japan.

The participation and breaking history of institutions at 3 past WUDC competitions in any category will determine the order for the first ever WUDC in India. This is not only good news for powerhouses like Monash and Oxford but also an advantage for Indonesian schools that have broken into the EFL or ESL eliminations in the past 3 WUDCs. Important registration dates

April 29 -- Organisers will post list of institutions that have attended any of the last 3 WUDCs and the number of teams those institutions have broken, in any category, during those competitions.
May 17 -- Deadline for those who think the list has incorrect information
May 20 (1700 WIB) -- Registration opens
May 21 (1700 WIB) -- Registration closes
June 1 -- Deadline for initial registration result. May be sooner.
July 8 -- Deadline for deposit payment for teams on the main list.
August 5 -- Deadline for deposit payment for teams promoted from the waiting list.
September 5 -- Deadline for full payment
September 30 -- Deadline for full payment for teams who are eligible to replace withdrawals

Priority List

From May 20, each institution can register to up to 3 teams. The organisers will initially take in 354 teams. Then, they will allow 30 scholarship teams to enter and if resources permit, the total number may rise to 400. Institutions without any presence in the previous 3 WUDCs can only register 1 team. The significant change comes after this. Organisers will create a "Registration Priority List" with the following rules

• Institutions first will be grouped according to their average number of breaking teams
• The groups will be listed from largest to smallest average number 
• Then, institutions with the same average will be ordered randomly by a number generator

Allocation Steps

Step 1 - Each registered institution will be allocated a team
Step 2 - A second team will be allocated to all requesting institutions with a record of at least 1 break starting from the highest on the priority list.
Step 3 - A third team will be allocated to all requesting institutions with a breaking average of 1.5 or more during the past 3 years.
Step 4 - A second team will be allocated to all remaining requesting institutions
Step 5 - A third team will be allocated to all remaining requesting institutions
((The org comm seems to think there would still be slots after Step 5))

Waiting List

Theoretically, the allocation for the main list should initially end with the 354th team on the priority list and the waiting list begins from the 355th team. This can change if there are remaining slots on the main list after Step 5. Any institution with outstanding team requests then will be placed on the waiting list following the same steps outlined above. Eventhough the rules first say institutions that have not attended any of the past 3 WUDCs would not get more than 1 slot, they may request extra teams. Of course, they will be placed at the bottom of the waiting list. Although the likeliness is very thin, they could get their request granted if space permits.

IVED 2013: The 16th Edition Starts Without Two-Time Champ STAN

The 16th edition of the Indonesian Varsities English Debate (IVED), the country's most prestigious debating tournament, started today at Institut Teknologi Bandung. More than 200 varsity debaters from 36 tertiary institutions gathered in the hillside city and witnessed a test debate on taxing religious organisations that commenced the event. A prominent absentee was Sekolah Tinggi Akuntansi Negara (STAN), which has weakened since the school won back-to-back in 2004 and 2005. It also failed to show up last year.

Preliminary debates will take place on Saturday and Sunday with 3 rounds per day. The best 16 on the tab will qualify for the main knockouts while the top 8 novice teams can progress into a separate elimination stage. Team Indonesia for the 2013 World Schools Debating Championships will participate in the prelims but won't be eligible to break. Previously, only teams with 4 wins from 6 rounds could break in the open category. The majority of the out rounds will be held on Monday while finals will take place on Tuesday.

The 3-on-3 IVED is the de-facto national championships and winners are considered the best of their generation. Last year, dark horse Universitas Bakrie pulled off an upset by defeating powerhouse Universitas Indonesia in the final. It was Bakrie's first ever domestic trophy. UI still leads with 8 IVED trophies and is among the favourites this year. The other strong contender is Binus International, which is fielding debaters who won the EFL title in the 2012 United Asians Debating Championships and broke in the 2012 World Universities Peace Invitational Debate. While Binus teams (regular and international) have won many domestic competitions, none could bag the IVED title in the past 15 years.

WUDC 2013: Indonesian Teams Still in Contention After R6

Results after R6 of the 2013 World Universities Debating Championships, released by the organisers, show several Indonesian teams still have the hope to break into elimination stage, including in the open competition. With the new 48-team break system, teams with 17 points after 9 rounds may have a chance to advance into the main knockouts. Last year, teams with 15 points could make the cut for the ESL quarterfinals while a squad had to possess 13 points to safely break in the EFL category. The expansion from 8 to 16 teams that can break in the EFL group this year may give teams with 11 points a shot while the ESL bar stays the same.

No Indonesian has broken into the main WUDC out rounds or reached the top 48 team list. The only time Indonesians got an under-100 rank was in 1999 when the UI pair of Ria Nuri Dharmawan and Puguh "Pupung" Priambodo ended at #85 during the country's first foray in Worlds. Ria now is a World Bank lawyer while Pupung is a diplomat. Last year, another UI duo (Ahmad Naufal Dai & Irene Severina) broke 1st in the EFL category with 14 points while a team from Sekolah Tinggi Akuntansi Negara (Teddy Triatmojo & Halim Nuswantoro) came 8th with 13 points but both fell in the semifinals.

Organizers of the 2013 Indonesian Varsities English Debate, the country's most prestigious debating tournament, have granted slots to 72 teams. They have until October 16 to pay up before teams on the waiting list take away their seats. One institution that is nowhere on any list is twice champions Sekolah Tinggi Akuntansi Negara, which has declined in recent years. IVED 2013 will take place from January 11 to 16 at Institut Teknologi Bandung, which has hosted the event twice in the past. The main list in alphabetical order is as follows:

NDC-NES 2012: 3 Bipeds, 3 ITB Teams Advance

Binus International and Institut Teknologi Bandung stormed into the knockouts of the economics-themed 2012 National Debating Competition-National Economic Seminar with 3 teams each. The former also secured the 2 first positions on the tab, making it possible for them to create an all-Bipeds final.

ITB has no chance to achieve that feat as all of its 3 teams are jumbled in the same quadrant. ITB A and B will meet in the octofinals while C would face the winner of the family feud if they could overcome a squad from Sekolah Tinggi Akuntansi Negara. The elimination stage begins tomorrow. ALSA Unpad E-Challenge Debates Start with 36 Teams

ALSA Universitas Padjadjaran's E-Challenge began a couple of days ago with a handful of English-related contests but the jewel of the event, the debates, will only start today with 36 teams, including squads from Binus University and Sekolah Tinggi Akuntansi Negara that skipped the national championships two weeks ago due to academic schedule clashes. Seven teams from Bandung and Palu high schools join the list. Finals will take place on Monday. The competing teams are as follows:

IVED 2012: Final Team List with No STAN or Binus

Organizers of the 15th Indonesian Varsities English Debate have announced the final list of participants, showing the absence of two-time champion Sekolah Tinggi Akuntansi Negara and last year's semifinalist Binus University. IVED's February 7 to 11 schedule clashes with the final exams of the 2 schools and the latter has also decided to focus resources on hosting the Asian English Olympics that will take place less than a week after.

Favorites Universitas Indonesia, Institut Teknologi Bandung and Binus International are all fielding three teams. Reigning champion Universitas Gadjah Mada and Universitas Diponegoro, the winner of the recent JOVED, will have two squads each. Only 16 out of 60 participating teams can proceed into the knockouts. UGM denied UI from grabbing its ninth national 3-on-3 crown last year.

WUDC 2012: Indonesian Results

The 2012 World University Debating Championships had 17 Indonesian teams. Two of them, University Indonesia C and Sekolah Tinggi Akuntansi Negara A, broke into the EFL semifinals. Roderick Sibarani (UI A) grabbed 2nd best EFL speaker title immediately followed by Ahmad Naufal Dai at 3rd.

Several Indonesian speakers qualified as ESL, a higher category than EFL, including Adlini Ilma Ghaisany (UI A) who was the best among Indonesians. Had she passed the EFL requirement, she would have been the tournament's top  EFL speaker and UI A could have debated in the EFL semifinals. Only those with less than 3 months of living in an English-speaking country during school age or 6 months of studying in an institution where English is the instruction language can qualify as EFL speakers. The ESL threshold is less than 5 years of living in an English-speaking country during school age or studying in institutions where English is the instruction language.

Almost 400 teams or 800 speakers from over 40 countries joined WUDC 2012. The top team on the Open tab scored 23 points while the last breaking pair had 18. The top scoring Indonesian team of all time got 16 points in WUDC 2008. The highest ranked Indonesian team ended at #85 in WUDC 1999. The best Indonesian speaker reached #186 also in WUDC 1999. WUDC 2012: Monash Wins Title from OG Again

#28 Monash University B (Amit Golder/Kiran Iyer) won the 2012 World Universities Debating Championships in Manila after defeating #2 University of Oxford B (Steph Bell & Jen Coyne), #8 Stanford University A (Faris Mohiuddin & Michael Baer) and #18 University of Sydney B (Elle Jones & Daniel Swain) in the grandfinal that had the motion "This House Supports Nationalism". Golder/Iyer were the Opening Government in that debate, the same role another Monash team had when they championed last year's WUDC.


Golder/Iyer have been on fire since late 2011, winning the Victoria IV and the Melbourne Mini. Their WUDC win was the second time Monash bagged back-to-back WUDC victories. No university has accomplished that feat before. The Melbourne-based school's first and second trophies came from the 1999 and 2000 editions. With 4 titles, Monash is a trophy shy from record holders University of Glasgow and University of Sydney that boast 5.

Ben Woolgar from #1 University of Oxford A topped the overall WUDC 2012 speaker tab. The ESL title went to #1ESL University of Tel Aviv A (Omer Nevo & Sella Nevo) and the brothers also took 1st and 2nd best ESL speaker titles. The winners of the EFL category were #2EFL Ewha University A from South Korea. Goran Jankuloski from #3EFL University of Belgrade C was the best EFL speaker.

Indonesia sent a large contingent this year with 17 teams. Two of them, #1EFL University of Indonesia C (Ahmad Naufal Dai & Irene Severina) and #8EFL Sekolah Tinggi Akuntansi Negara (Teddy Triatmojo & Halim Nuswantoro), reached the EFL semifinals. Naufal also won the 3rd best EFL speaker title but he was below schoolmate Roderick Sibarani of UI A who stood at 2nd best on the EFL speaker tab. WUDC 2012: No Indonesia in EFL Final

#1 Universitas Indonesia C (Ahmad Naufal Dai & Irene Severina) and #8 Sekolah Tinggi Akuntansi Negara A (Teddy Triatmojo & Halim Nuswantoro) failed to become the first Indonesians to reach a grandfinal in the World Universities Debating Championships of any category. They were a step away from advancing into the EFL category grandfinal at the 2012 WUDC in Manila but #4EFL National University of Defence Technology A from China and #5EFL University of Zagreb A denied them making history. The other finalists are #3EFL University of Belgrade C and #2EFL Ewha University A from South Korea.

In ESL category, #1ESL University of Tel Aviv A, #3ESL University of Leiden A, #7ESL Berlin Debating Union and #9ESL International Islamic University of Malaysia B advanced to the grandfinals. WUDC 2012: EFL Break List - UI Meets STAN in Semi

Eight teams are eligible to proceed into the finals of the English-as-Foreign-Language (EFL) category at the 2012 World Universities Debating Championships. The EFL competition is third tier in WUDC under the Open and ESL (English-as-Second Language) debates. Only those with under 3 months of living in an English-speaking country when of school age or 6 months of studying in an institution where English is the instruction language can qualify as EFL speakers. All members of an EFL team must be EFL speakers. This year's top 8 teams are as follows:
