Tarakanita High School Alumni Win Inaugural Binus Pro-Ams 2014

Graduates of SMU Tarakanita 2 high school Patty Regina and Willem Chua today championed the inaugural Binus Pro-Ams tournament under the team name 'Happy Swingers'. It was the first ever British Parliamentary debate tournament in Indonesia that requires each participating two-member team to have one debater with a record of breaking into the out-rounds of at least one major national or international competition and another with none. Patty is a currently an Universitas Indonesia debater while Willem is a fresh high school graduate. Last year, the two along with another Tarakanita alumnus won a debate tournament in Surabaya for those with less than 4 semesters in college.

Melisa Irene from Binus International topped the speaker tab while UI freshman debater Jessica Andriani Liong grabbed the best amateur speaker award. The Binus Pro-Ams is a prelude to the 2014 Asian English Olympics that will take place at the same venue, the Anggrek campus of Binus University in West Jakarta, this week with a number of non-Indonesian teams. The champions of last year's AEO, Vicario Reinaldo and Fauzan Reza Maulana from Institut Teknologi Bandung, went on to snatch the EFL title at the 2014 World Universities Debating Championship.

Trio of UGM Debaters Lead DOTY 2013 Table

Three debaters from Universitas Gadjah Mada are leading the 2013 Debater of the Year table following the school's March dominance in the Aku Untuk Indonesiaku debate in Surabaya and the English Parade contest in Malang.  One of them, Amir Abdul Aziz, is alone at the top after winning AUI and taking the best speaker award in E-Parade. There are 6 UGM students in the top 10 and 11 in the top 20, showing the rest that 2013 has been good for this Yogyakarta-based powerhouse. This success, however, has a caveat. The strongest debaters from other powerhouses like Universitas Indonesia, Binus International and Institut Teknologi Bandung skipped the tournaments that UGM won in March. They all will participate in Indonesia's second classic of the year, the ALSA UI E-Comp, at the end of April and challenge the UGM streak. Click here for full table. AUI 2013: UGM, Amir Abdul Aziz Win Third Trophy of This Year

2013 is less than 3 months old but Universitas Gadjah Mada has scored a hat-trick with the victory in this year's Aku Untuk Indonesiaku Debate in Surabaya. UGM teams previously won the Solo Open Debating Championship and the ALSA Unpad E-Challenge. In each winning team, there was fourth-year student Amir Abdul Aziz.

#1 UGM B (Amir Abdul Aziz, Erwina Salsabila, Romario Tambunan) defeated schoolmates #3 UGM B (Alif Satria, Dianty Widyowati, Indriani Pratiwi) in today's final at Universitas Kristen Petra. Each time UGM wins this year, one of its debaters grabs the best speaker but never the same person. This time, freshman Alif Satria topped the tab above his seniors. The ex-WSDC debater has now collected 2 championships and 1 best speaker title long before the end of his first year.

The English Parade will start tomorrow in Malang with 4 UGM teams on the list. They are obviously hot favourites. Four trophies within less than 3 months would be record-setting.  

AUI 2013: Second All-UGM Final in Less Than 30 Days

Universitas Gadjah Mada debaters are on a roll. Two UGM teams will meet this afternoon in the last match of the Aku Untuk Indonesiaku Debate in Surabaya less than a month after they created an all-UGM final in the ALSA Unpad E-Challenge. #1 UGM B (Amir Abdul Aziz, Erwina Salsabila, Romario Tambunan) and #3 UGM A (Alif Satria, Dianty Widyowati, Indriani Pratiwi) both defeated teams from Universitas Brawijaya in the semifinals. UGM debaters have won two trophies in 2013 so far through teams that had Amir Abdul Aziz and Alif Satria. The upcoming final will decide which debater can become the first to win three titles this year.

UGM Wins, Dominates Surabaya Debate

Three teams from Universitas Gadjah Mada reached the grandfinal of the 2012 Surabaya Debate Event yesterday and UGM A (Amir Abdul Aziz & Nabila Aghniarizqa) championed this British Parliamentary-style competition. Outside from UGM and Universitas Jenderal Soedirman, the rest of the participants came from East Java province. The other finalists were UGM B (Bella Chyntiara & Gentur Adiutama), UGM C (Dianty Widyowati & Wida Wahyuni) and Universitas Brawijaya (Aditya Janu & Nur Rizki Oceano). The event was held at Universitas Kristen Petra.

Malang Debaters Sweep Into DOTY List

The lastest changes in the 2012 IndoDebate Debater of the Year list did not come from anything in March; they derived from a tournament in February and almost all of the new entrants are Malang students. Due to accessibility issues, the tabulation results from the International Debating Championship at Universitas Ma Chung, which took place from February 15 to 17, only came to light in March. Contrary to the event's billing, the data showed there was no non-Indonesian debater. Moreover, most of the 20 participating teams came from Malang, where the university is located, and nobody from outside that city slipped into the top 10 speaker list.

However, the DOTY list still incorporated the results because IDC Ma Chung did not limit participation and there were teams from 4 other provinces, rendering it into a nationwide competition.Universitas Brawijaya debaters Dungga Nur Prayogo and Nur Luthfi Hidayatullah won the tournament and their schoolmate Rasuna Rizky Utami topped the speaker tab.

Leading Indonesian debating institutions skipped the tourney because it was too close to the nationals IVED, which was held a few days before also in Malang. The situation opened a window of opportunity for new names, many little known outside East Java, to enter DOTY. This is positive for the list as it displays talent outside the western area of Java, where most of the powerhouses reside. Hopefully, these entrants will show they can also excel in future tournaments outside of their hometown.

There is an additional layer of sorting used in the lastest table. Before the last level of sorting, the alphabetical order of names, the rank in the previous month is now a consideration in order to give a little reward to consistency. While the Polinela tournament in Lampung starts in late March, it will conclude in April and its results will be incorporated in the next DOTY update. Other events that will also affect the next list include an open at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember, Surabaya and an economics debate at Universitas Padjadjaran, Bandung.

     

IndoDebate's Debater of the Year Rankings as of June 2011

IndoDebate's Debater of the Year table for June incorporated the results from the 2011 United Asian Debating Championships' English-as-Foreign-Language category, which was appraised like a national scale tournament, and SODE, the open tournament in Surabaya that attracted debaters from beyond the East Java region. Former IVED and JOVED champions, as well as, the finalists of the recent English Fiesta competed in SODE along side debating coaches and high school students.


While UADC 2011 was more prestigious than any Indonesia-based competition, there were less than two dozen EFL teams and the quality of the EFL category's knockouts was on par with a national contest. Only achievements in the main arena of a major international competition will get higher points in the DOTY table.


Like many other unofficial ranking systems, the DOTY formula is arbitrary and has its downside. IndoDebate's DOTY does not grade a tournament that it is open for all Indonesian college students and may fail to detect competitions, eventhough they invite universities across the country, if organizers do not announce results on the Indodebaters mailing list. However, this table will always strive for objectivity and freedom from regional or school bias.     
    
The results of the two additional competitions catapulted several debaters, especially Ammar Syah Anwar from Universitas Bakrie and Astri Agustina from Universitas Gadjah Mada, to the top 10 but the highest-ranked five stayed the same. The DOTY table is prone to change next month as the National Universities English Debating Championships will take place next week and half of top 10, including Ammar and Astri, will be competing.

UGM Wins SODE 2011 in a Mainly Non-Student Final

Universitas Gadjah Mada emerged triumphant in SMA 2 Surabaya's Open Debate Event yesterday, beating a composite team from East Java called "Angry Cock" in a final which only had one college student among six of the debaters.

The UGM team had graduates Caessar Pronocitro and Novelisa Wirid teaming up with Astri Agustina, the school's representative for the coming NUEDC who is an International Relations major, while their opponents were Erwin Susetyo, a high school student from SMA 1 Sidoarjo, his coach Rizal Kuddah who also lectures at Akademi Angkatan Laut and Sony Lewi, a Surabaya-based Universitas Indonesia alumnus who won the Capital Market Debate Competition in 2007.  The 2011 SODE had no age, geographical or educational restrictions, which meant participants could range from junior high school students to university graduates, and composites are allowed to go all the way.

UGM knocked down the motion "This House Would Grant Amnesty to Dictators Who Step Down Peacefully", a topic that has become popular this year in light of the revolutions in the Middle East. Variations of the motion have made their way to several recent debating tournaments across the globe in recent months, including the final of the 2011 United Asian Debating Championships. A variant will also feature as the opening prepared motion in the coming 2011 World Schools Debating Championships.

SODE 2011 Begins, Pits Jr. High Students Against Uni Graduates

The SMA 2 Surabaya Open Debate Event (SODE) 2011 kicks off today with participants ranging from junior high school students to those who have already graduated from their universities. Organizers have decided to upgrade SODE from a East Java only contest to a national-scale event, making it into a competition without age, educational and geographical restrictions. While SODE does not separate the junior and senior high school students from the older debaters, organizers have prizes for the top SMP and SMA teams, which all are also eligible to vie for the main trophies. The final of this 3-on-3 tournament will take place tomorrow.

To stress the upgraded scale of the competition, the organizers set up an adjudicaton core with national credentials that include Eldhianto Jusuf (UGM), the coach of Team Indonesia for WSDC 2011, and IVED 2011 Best Speaker Rifan Ibnu Rahman (ITB).

UN Malang Win ITS Open, USU Law Victorious in Speedy 2011

A team from Universitas Negeri Malang (Ayrton Eduardo, Ziadatul Hikmiah, Erich Zanuardhi) beat same-city rival Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (Gandhabaskara Saputra, Hanif Falah, Anastasya Wattimena) in the final round of the ITS Open English Debating Competition in Surabaya on Sunday. The event attracted more than 40 teams throughout East Java province that could include graduates of their respective institutions in the squad.

On the same day, Universitas Sumatera Utara's Law School (Yuthi Sinari, Paulina Tandiono, Michael Timothy) came out as the winner of the Speedy 2011 debate competition in Medan after defeating STMIK Mikroskil. Elsyam from Mikroskil took the best speaker award in the tournament that had 19 teams from Sumatra's largest city of Medan and its surroundings.

ITS Open, Medan's Speedy Start Today as Veterans Rule IFF

Two 3-on-3 debate competitions, the ITS Open in Surabaya and Universitas Sumatra Utara's Speedy in Medan, kicked off today with 44 and 19 teams respectively. Another tournament STAN's Indonesian Finance Festival may have less participants with only 14 teams but it has been underway since March 10 and will have 2 preliminaries and a pre-semifinal round today. So far, IDF, a composite team comprising veterans Ahmad Naufal Dai (UI/FT'09 Champion), Satrio Adi Pratama (Undip/NUEDC'10 Champion) and Eldhianto Maulana Jusuf (UGM/IVED'11 Champion), are hot favourites in the IFF after beating rivals with clear margins in the first three preliminary rounds on March 11. All three tournaments will hold their finals on March 13.

IFF Still Open for Registration, 44 Teams Join ITS Debate

The Indonesian Finance Festival is still taking debate participants as the 30-team cap has not been reached yet although the event, which will be held March 11-13 at STAN's Bintaro campus, offers enticing prizes, including a combined Rp. 5 million in cash for the champion and runner-up. The motions in the 3-on-3 IFF will all be related to economics. The organizer's email is indonesianfinancefest@gmail.com.


Beside the IFF, two other debate tournaments will also take place in Indonesia next weekend. Surabaya's ITS Open, which will use the Australasian format, will have 44 teams from all over East Java province, including from AAL, Indonesia's naval academy. This is an expansion from its original 40-team cap. The other one is Speedy 2011 at Universitas Sumatera Utara in Medan.

USU to Hold English Debate on the Same Day with IFF, ITS Open

Universitas Sumatera Utara will hold SPEEDY 2011 which includes an intervarsity debate competition on March 12-13 at their campus in Medan. With this competition, there will be three simultaneous debate tournaments in three separate Indonesian provinces on those dates. The two others will be the Indonesian Finance Festival at STAN Tangerang, Banten and the ITS Open in Surabaya, East Java.

ITS Plans Tournament Limited to East Java Debaters

Institut Teknologi Sepuluh November (ITS) in Surabaya will hold a 40-team debating competition that allows composite teams, invites secondary and tertiary level students, as well as, anyone under 25 years old but limits participation to those from East Java province only. The 1st ITS-Open English Debate Competition will use the 3-on-3 Australasian format and take place from March 12 to 13 at the same time STAN holds the Indonesian Finance Festival debates.
