DOTY 2014: UGM Debaters Flood Top 10 After Busy September

Universitas Gadjah Mada debaters did not only keep the pole position in the 2014 Debater of the Year table but also took the majority of spots in the Top 10 after results from six tournaments in September were added. Six UGM debaters now claim the eight highest ranks of DOTY 2014. Indriani Pratiwi is still leading the pack following her victory in the Bawor Cup. Other UGM speakers received bonus points by reaching the semifinals of the Indonesia Debate Open, which had more international participants than local ones due to the high registration fee. The DOTY table appreciates achievements in open international tournaments. IDO 2014, which had no Indonesian debater in the final, had a definite international flavour.

The other September tournaments that the DOTY calculations considered were the agricultural debate in Bogor, where host Institut Pertanian Bogor pulled off an upset against a highly favoured UGM team, the Just for Fun debate at Universitas Indonesia, the National Debate Competition-National Economic Seminar in Bandung and the debate competition at Universitas Soegijapranata in Semarang.

The only debaters who can spoil the rise of the first DOTY from UGM come from UI and all of them just graduated in August. Graduates still can harvest points if they start the year as a student. It is common practice in the international debating world to give a grace period for such debaters. If these debaters are allowed to compete in the World Universities Debating Championship at the end of the year, DOTY will also count them in. Indeed, the two most recent DOTYs secured the title after they graduated. This year the chance is not as large because there are only two national tournaments left that allow graduates to compete, Ganesha Open and Founders Trophy, and the UGM students are leading the table with a comfortable cushion. It is more likely to see a UGM debater snatch the title considering the available opportunities.

NUDC 2014: UI Wins First Title, Breaks Binus Streak

Universitas Indonesia has the most successful debating society in the country with a room full of trophies from all major nationwide debate tournaments bar one - the National Universities Debating Championship (NUDC), the top school-based British Parliamentary contest. That void finally has been filled. #1 UI (Dennys Kapa & Aulia Anggita) won the 2014 NUDC last night after defending the final motion that proposed Indonesia should invest more in the arms industry.

UI dashed the hope of #2 Binus University (Rivera Kathrin & Marchella Febriyanti) that were bent on grabbing the fourth consecutive title for the Jakarta-based school. The other finalists were #4 Universitas Gadjah Mada (Indriani Pratiwi & Wida Wahyuni) and #7 Universitas Sanata Dharma (Sekartiyasa Kusumastuti & Tethy Pesoa), which both came from Yogyakarta. The UI, Binus and Sanata Dharma, the top three in the final, are eligible for funding to go to the 2015 World Universities Debating Championships in Malaysia.

UI's Dennys Kapa came out as the best speaker of the tournament, a title that last went to an UI debater in 2012. He graduated from a high school in Kupang, the capital of East Nusa Tenggara province, one of the most impoverished provinces in Indonesia. Today's victory crowned his years of national success that include two ALSA UI championship titles, the last one won with her NUDC partner Aulia Anggita. He is an example how a debater from a non-Java high school can excel on the national stage when he can find a suitable institution and receive a supporting environment to train and enhance his skills.

In the novice category, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (Novarian Budi & Husna Amirah) from East Java came out triumphant after defeating three non-Java teams Universitas Andalas, Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara and Universitas Mulawarman. The best novice speaker award went Ida Ayu Pradnya Paramita from Universitas Udayana Bali, who was a member of Team Indonesia in the 2013 World Schools Debating Championships. The former high school debating star is an example of a talented non-Java debater who decided to stay in her home province after graduation. Udayana reached all the way to the main quarterfinal.

NUDC 2014: All-Java Semifinal Again. Can Binus Win Four Titles in a Row?

The 8 teams in the semifinals of the 2014 National Universities Debating Championships are all from Java-based institutions, including Binus University Jakarta that has held the title for the last three years. The geographical hegemony has stood although the education ministry this year expanded the number of participation to 112 from 96 that gave 16 more slots to non-Java institutions. 

In the first semifinal, reigning champion #2 Binus University (Rivera Kathrin & Marchella Febriyanti) must overcome challenges from #7 Universitas Sanata Dharma (Sekartiyasa Kusumastuti & Tethy Pesoa), #3 Universitas Pelita Harapan (Saagar Teckchandani & Dharma Dwitama Harja) and #14 Universitas Padjadjaran (Erfan Supradhono & Omar Azfar) if they want to secure their fourth title in as many years. The two last teams eliminated one of the tournament's favourite, NUDC 2009 champion #6 Institut Teknologi Bandung.

In the second semifinal the country's two top powerhouses, #1 Universitas Indonesia (Aulia Anggita & Dennys Kapa) and #4 Universitas Gadjah Mada (Indriani Pratiwi & Wida Wahyuni), will clash along with #12 Universitas Brawijaya (Zelly Sidi Zamzami & Fahri Akbar) and #16 Universitas Ahmad Dahlan (Muhammad Iqwan & Karjongko). The semifinal motion reads "This House Believes That People Have the Right to be Forgotten".

UI debaters have secured the right to receive state financing for their participation in the 2015 World Universities Debating Championship after they broke first into the knockouts. More WUDC funding packages will go to three NUDC 2014 finalists. The ongoing national BP tournament is taking place at Universitas Batam in the Riau Islands.    

Non-Java squads Universitas Syiah Kuala from Aceh and Bali's Universitas Udayana gave spirited challenges in the quarterfinals but came short from becoming the first from outside of the main island to reach the top 8. Aceh and Bali, provinces that have won the national high school championship before, have strong squads at the pre-varsity level but their universities need to attract those talented debaters to stay home to extend success into varsity level. Some debaters from those provinces are now debating for UI.

However, it was also refreshing to see there was a team from far eastern Indonesia, Universitas Pattimura from Ambon, in the octofinal although they could not advance into the top 16. That shows serious training, including from organizations like On That Point that try to empower disadvantaged regions, can make a difference. This issue has nothing to do with race, ethnicity or any other personal background. The best Indonesian debaters are hard working individuals who come from all kinds of social groups. The matter is institutional. It is about how institutions and institutionalized training can provide the right exercise, materials and environment for eager debaters to enhance their skills and knowledge. Without them, even the most talented with the gift of the gab would never shine on the debating stage. 

WUDC 2015: 10 Indonesian Teams Secure Slots, ITB Missing

Ten teams from 7 Indonesian institutions are on the updated attendance list of the 2015 World Universities Debating Championship in Kuala Lumpur. Those who have been part of the original list should pay before July 31 while teams that got updated allocations have until August 29 to meet their payment obligations. The number of Indonesian participants may increase if other teams from Indonesia can get on the main list after the aforementioned deadlines. Institut Teknologi Bandung, which championed the 2014 WUDC's English-as-Foreign-Language category, was missing from the main list after its allocation was dropped. Tarakanita High School Alumni Win Inaugural Binus Pro-Ams 2014

Graduates of SMU Tarakanita 2 high school Patty Regina and Willem Chua today championed the inaugural Binus Pro-Ams tournament under the team name 'Happy Swingers'. It was the first ever British Parliamentary debate tournament in Indonesia that requires each participating two-member team to have one debater with a record of breaking into the out-rounds of at least one major national or international competition and another with none. Patty is a currently an Universitas Indonesia debater while Willem is a fresh high school graduate. Last year, the two along with another Tarakanita alumnus won a debate tournament in Surabaya for those with less than 4 semesters in college.

Melisa Irene from Binus International topped the speaker tab while UI freshman debater Jessica Andriani Liong grabbed the best amateur speaker award. The Binus Pro-Ams is a prelude to the 2014 Asian English Olympics that will take place at the same venue, the Anggrek campus of Binus University in West Jakarta, this week with a number of non-Indonesian teams. The champions of last year's AEO, Vicario Reinaldo and Fauzan Reza Maulana from Institut Teknologi Bandung, went on to snatch the EFL title at the 2014 World Universities Debating Championship.

DOTY 2014: Gadjah Mada Debaters Take Early Lead This Year

Debaters from Universitas Gadjah Mada filled up the first three spots of the new IndoDebate Debater of the Year table following the restart of the count for 2014. Indriani Pratiwi, Romario Tambunan and Alif Satria did not only give UGM its third national 3-on-3 title from the recent Indonesian Varsities English Debate but they also came first, second, third on the tournament's individual tab. Whether they could keep the lead is still up in the air. UGM debaters had a strong start last year but failed to outlast the formidable Binus International pair of Jaran Walia, who eventually won the third DOTY title, and Invi Atmanegara in crucial competitions in the second half of 2013.

Besides the UGM trio, Fauzan Reza Maulana and Vicario Reinaldo from Institut Teknologi Bandung are also high on the list after their victory in the EFL category of the recent World Universities Debating Championships. In this month's count, DOTY 2013 rankings affected the order for those with the same total points. The table used a list of top 10 Indonesians in WUDC 2014's open speaker tab to feed the columns, disregarding their language statuses. WUDC 2014: Full List of Motions

The motions at the 2014 World Universities Debating Championships were the highlight of the Chennai tournament amid shortcomings in other organizational aspects. Most of them, especially the mandatory ones, were fair and relevant. The most controversial was the open octofinal motion that led to the demise of several favorite teams that had to defend it. WUDC 2014: Indonesian Results

Vicario Reinaldo (ITB A) offers a POI in the WUDC EFL final in Chennai

The 2014 World Universities Debating Championships in Chennai provided a high and a low for Indonesian debating. For the first time, a team from Indonesia grabbed a WUDC trophy after Institut Teknologi Bandung A (Vicario Reinaldo & Fauzan Reza Maulana) beat their opponents in the final of the English-as-Foreign-Language category,  putting our country on the map. They made all Indonesian debaters proud and showed that excellence on the world stage is very possible to attain.

However, WUDC 2014 also had a low point. Musamus University A from Papua became the worst team of the tournament with zero points after getting the 4th rank in all 9 preliminary matches. This was the first time an Indonesian team left WUDC pointless. The debaters also populated the floor of the tab with one of them scoring as low as 54 in a debate. This underlines how lack of preparation and involvement in the domestic circuit can spell disaster in an international competition.

Besides these two contrasting teams, there were nine other Indonesian pairs. Universitas Gadjah Mada A (Amir Abdul Aziz & Nabila Aghniarizqa) like ITB A also broke into the EFL knockouts. National champions Binus International A (Jaran Walia & Invi Atmanegara) along with 2 teams from Universitas Indonesia actually scored higher than UGM A and ITB A but they could not progress after the prelims because they were considered as English-as-Second-Language teams and failed to gather enough points to break into the ESL elimination stage. 

Only those with less than 3 months of living in an English-speaking country during school age or 6 months of studying in an institution where English is the instruction language can qualify as EFL speakers. The ESL threshold is less than 5 years of living in an English-speaking country during school age or studying in institutions where English is the instruction language.

Outside the historic ITB victory in the EFL category, other Indonesian records stay intact. The top scoring Indonesian team of all time gathered 16 points in WUDC 2008. The highest ranked Indonesian team ended at #85 in WUDC 1999. The best Indonesian speaker reached #186 also in WUDC 1999. The WUDC 2014 Indonesian debaters failed to best these stats. Interestingly, the highest ranked Indonesian speaker comes from a foreign school. It was Stevensen Chen, a former Medan high school debater who now studies at Hitotsubashi University in Japan. The detailed results of the Indonesian teams are as follows.

WUDC 2014: Victorious Harvard Debaters End US Drought, Aussie Reign

#4 Harvard University A (Josh Zoffer & Ben Sprung-Keyser) became the first American team for more than a decade or even two, depending on how one sees it, to triumph in the most prestigious debate tournament on the planet. Their victory in the 2014 World Universities Debating Championships in Chennai ended a long drought for the United States since New York University Law School won it in 2002.

Interestingly, both of the NYU Law speakers were students from the United Kingdom. The last true American pair to win WUDC also came from Harvard but they did it in 1993 when the format was 2-on-2, not the 4-team British Parliamentary style that is currently used.

In the recent final, Harvard acted as the Opening Government and proposed the motion "This House Believes That India Should Adopt Aggressive Free Market Policies" in front of an audience that included top government officials of India's Tamil Nadu state. Their stance arguing that India can only rise to become a world economic power if they radically change their protectionist policies stood until the end.

The victory was an upset because many had placed their bets on Closing Opposition #1 University of Sydney B (Chris Bisset & Elle Jones) who set a new record on points collected in the preliminary round with a whopping 26 from 8 wins and a second place finish. The other finalists were  #10 University of Cambridge B (Ben Adams & Kitty Parker-Brooks) and #27 University of Glasgow (John McKee/Duncan Crowe).

Harvard also stopped a four-year Australian reign. A Sydney team won it in 2010 and then their countrymen from Monash University secured the title for three straight years. The Australian strength was apparent on the speaker tab. The top four all come from Australia with Sydney's Elle Jones as the number one debater in WUDC 2014.

WUDC 2014: ITB Puts Indonesia on the Map, Wins EFL Title

#8EFL Institut Teknologi Bandung A (Fauzan Reza Maulana & Vicario Reinaldo) proved Indonesian debaters can excel on the world stage after winning the English-as-Foreign-Language category of the 2014 World Universities Debating Championships. This is the first time an Indonesian team championed a category in WUDC.

In the final, ITB A successfully knocked down the motion "This House Believes That Multinational Companies Should Be Liable for Human Rights Abuses That Occur Anywhere in Their Supply Chain". They defeated #1EFL University of Warsaw A, Russia's #3EFL New Economic School A and #6EFL Eberhard Karls University Tubingen A from Germany.

Although they came to the final as the lowest ranked team among the four, they put up a brave fight. Their strategy as Opening Opposition to attack the failure of the government bench to characterize the relations between MNCs and their outsourced supply chain in developing countries paid off. Their tenacity from the beginning until the end of the debate also bore fruit. The ITB pair persistently threw damaging points of information at the opponents to strengthen their  arguments. In the end, many of their points, from the impact of capital flight, as the by-product of the proposal, for rural areas in poor countries to the lack of direct control in the hands of the MNCs on their abusive suppliers, were left standing. 

In the other restricted category, Berlin Debating Union A (Dessislava Kirova & Kai Dittman) from Germany became the English-as-Second Language champion of WUDC 2014. In the final, they defeated teams from Lund, Belgrade and Romania's Babes-Bolyai University.

ESL is a higher class than EFL. The latter is only for speakers with none to less than 6 months study in an English speaking country or institution with English as its language of instruction. A requirement that has made some Indonesian teams, including from Universitas Indonesia and Binus International, to compete as ESL participants. 

Nobody from an Indonesian institution got into the top 10 speakers of the three categories (EFL, ESL and Open) but Stevensen Chen, an Indonesian debater representing Japan's Hitotsubashi University, became the 6th best EFL speaker. The best EFL speaker was Belgrade University's Helena Ivanov while Mubarrat Wassey from International Islamic University of Malaysia took the individual ESL title.

WUDC 2014: ITB Boys Become First Indonesians to Reach a Worlds' Final

#8EFL Institut Teknologi Bandung A (Fauzan Maulana & Vicario Reinaldo) defeated their opponents in the English-as-Foreign-Language semifinal of the 2014 World Universities Debating Championships to become the first ever Indonesians to reach a WUDC final. In the penultimate debate, the pair, who won the 2013 Asian English Olympics in Jakarta, will face #1EFL University of Warsaw A from Poland, Russian #3EFL New Economic School A and Germany's #6EFL Eberhard Karls University Tubingen A.

No Indonesian has broken into the main WUDC knockouts. Several Indonesian teams have progressed into the ESL and EFL elimination stages since these categories became available less than a decade ago. ITB A became the first among them to earn the honour to debate in front of more than 1,000 debaters and judges from around the world.
