Roderick Sibarani is the First IndoDebate Debater of the Year

No debater in Indonesia was more active and successful in 2011 than Roderick Sibarani from Universitas Indonesia. The third-year accounting student, popularly known as Odi, won 3 trophies, grabbed 2 best speaker awards and reached at least the semifinals in 8 out of 10 tournaments he joined last year. He championed the classic ALSA UI E-Comp, the longest-running English debate event in the country, and with the same teammates he carried the name of the country all to the first place in the ASEAN Youth Debate.

Based on his accomplishments in 2011, Odi, who is also the current vice president of UI's English Debating Society, deserves to be IndoDebate's first Debater of the Year. That also means he has won a one-year subscription of Newsweek magazine.

Odi had been on the top end of the DOTY table since it first rolled out in May 2011. He only lost his lead once in September to eventual runner-up Rifan Ibnu Rahman from Institut Teknologi Bandung and grabbed it back in October. The title was actually decided in November after the Founders' Trophy as his points were just too far above any of his rivals. Moreover, December did not change the table much because there was no competition in Indonesia and most who debated abroad failed to return with credits. The only tournament that contributed a few revisions was Asian BP but the changes did not affect the top end.

Results from the World Universities Debating Championships in Manila will be incorporated in the 2012 table because they came out after the turn of the year. Odi won the second best EFL speaker title there, a great way to plant his mark on the next DOTY list. Click here for the complete list. Find below the top 10 of the 2011 DOTY list. 2011 Third Trimester Debate Results

2012 is a few days away. The 2011 debating season in Indonesia technically reached its end in November as clubs used December to prepare for the World Universities Debating Championships in Manila by sending teams to pre-Worlds competitions abroad or intensifying practices at home. UI's Roderick Sibarani Regains DOTY 2011 Lead

Roderick Sibarani from Universitas Indonesia is back at the top of IndoDebate's Debater of the Year 2011 list after winning the ASEAN Youth Debate in Bandung earlier this month. He lost his lead last month after being ahead since May. The October list incorporated results from 2 tournaments, AYD and the E-Fest 2011 at Universitas Lampung. It does not include the Newbies Competition and Malang's English Parade because both contests limited participation based on non-competitive factors. The first was exclusively for college students without varsity debating experience while the latter only took debaters from three provinces.

AYD was country-based but to receive seats in the Indonesian team debaters had to undergo a national selection. Several debaters who were not in the official Team Indonesia also received points because they joined as non-breaking participants and finished at the top end of the speakers list. The DOTY 2011 list is still prone to changes as several tournaments await in November and December, including UI's Founders Trophy, the oldest British Parliamentary debate in Indonesia that is expected to attract the nation's top debaters.

UI Debaters Win 2011 Newbies Competition

Host Universitas Indonesia A (Agatha Kharisma, Lisia Astari, Patty Regina) defeated Institut Teknologi Bandung B (Yohanna Karina, Fauzan Reza Maulana, Jane Revevalin) in the grand final of the 2011 Newbies Debate Competition, which is exclusively for those who have no prior varsity English competitive debating experience. They knocked down the motion "This House Would Make Attendance at School Voluntary" in a debate that ended with a 4-1 split decision. Jane Revevalin took home the best speaker award.

This is EDS UI's fifth trophy this year after winning ALSA E-Comp, Australs ESL Category, Bawor Cup and BIND. A team made up of UI debaters who championed ALSA E-Comp also won the ASEAN Youth Debate last month but they represented Indonesia.

ALSA Champs Win ASEAN Debate for Indonesia

Indonesia defeated Thailand in the grandfinal of the ASEAN Youth Debate in Bandung yesterday with both countries being represented by debating teams from their top universities. The winning team were the same Universitas Indonesia squad that won the ALSA UI E-Comp last May - Adlini Ilma Ghaisany, Roderick Sibarani and Dennys Kapa - while Thailand fielded Nuanpan Ketumarn, Yuttana Saisangkagomon and Tidarat Yingcharoen, debaters from Chulalongkorn University who came second in the 2011 EU-Thailand Debate Championships - the country's equivalent to IVED. 

Six other ASEAN countries sent their representatives to the competition, which is part of the Tunza International Children & Youth Conference on the Environment. All participants of this UN-sponsored event must join discussions on sustainable development that will produce a declaration tomorrow. Due to this format, the 8 countries had different methods in tailoring their contingents. Same-school debaters formed the core of the Indonesian and Thai delegations. Malaysia and the Philippines mixed debaters and non-debaters from different colleges in their contingents. However, Singapore sent students with scant debating experience although its leading school NUS won the top Asian competition UADC this year. Malaysia and Singapore reached the semifinals of the Bandung debates. 

With this victory, Gesa-Odi-Dennys are the only 3-member team in Indonesia that have won 2 trophies this year so far. If they had used the UI flag in Bandung, it would had been the school's fifth English debating trophy in 2011.
