UGM Teams Win NNDC, E-Fiesta On The Same Day

Universitas Gadjah Mada teams championed two debate competitions in separate cities today. In hometown Yogyakarta, #1 UGM A (Aryanda Putra Tony & Nalaputi Basoeki) won the 3rd National Newbies Debate Competition, the main British Parliamentary contest exclusively  for novices. They defeated  cross-city rival #14 Universitas Sanata Dharma A (Franssisca Xaveria & Ivonne Kezia) and two Universitas Indonesia teams that failed to retain the title - #4 UI A (Gayatri Kancana & Imam Taufiq) and #3 UI C (Hudzaifah Abdullah & Ayu Sistiafi). UGM's Aryanda Putra Tony and UI's Ayu Sistiafi came out as the co-best speakers.

In Malang, another #1 UGM A (Noel Hasintongan, Ganjar Dennis, Aufia Espressivo) outclassed #2 Universitas Brawijaya Formasi (Nadya Ayuning, Nur Rizki Oceano, Haris Apriyanto) to win the 2014 English Fiesta debate. UB's Nur Rizki Oceano topped the speaker tab while his teammates came second and third.

UGM Teams Break First in This Year's NNDC, E-Fiesta

Teams from Universitas Gadjah Mada progressed first in two nationwide debating tournaments that reached their breaking announcement today -- the 3rd National Newbie Debating Competition in Yogyakarta and the English Fiesta in Malang. There is also a third championship going on this weekend in Tangerang, the 2014 International Humanitarian Law National Debate Competition, but it will only have its last preliminary round tomorrow morning. 

At NNDC, UGM A (Aryanda Putra Tony & Nalaputi Basoeki) led the list in the British Parliamentary style contest exclusively for novices. Three teams from rival Universitas Indonesia followed straight after. UI won all two of the past editions of NNDC. Here is the complete list.

DOTY 2014: UI Debaters Contest Gadjah Mada Reign

Universitas Indonesia debaters Roderick Sibarani and Magreta Kailla Adenta sailed to the top of the 2014 Debater of the Year table after their win in the recent ALSA UI E-Comp, breaking the dominance of speakers from Universitas Gadjah Mada. The UGM trio of Romario Tambunan, Indriani Pratiwi and Alif Satria had been taking the lead since they won the Indonesian Varsities English Debate in January. Romario still holds pole position for now but the margin is razor thin. The UGM reign may still emerge this year as the trio seem to be present in almost every tournament while UI debaters are more selective.

The other competition that contributed to the table for April 2014 was the English Parade in Malang. Although SKEPTIC, a competition in Yogyakarta in April, was billed as national, it was not considered due to its lack of participation from strong debate clubs from outside that city. UGM Wins All-Yogyakarta Final in SKEPTIC 2014

Universitas Gadjah Mada 1 (Alif Satria & Kartika Hananto) championed the 2014 SKEPTIC debate after defeating 3 other teams from Yogyakarta, where the event was held. The finalists were Universitas Sanata Dharma 1 (Tethy Pesoa & Sekartiyasa Kusumastuti), Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta 1 (Puguh Hariyanto & Retno Rahma Safitri) and an UGM-Universitas Atma Jaya Yogyakarta hybrid (Meganusa Ludvianto & Gratsia Kancanamaya). Alif Satria also topped the speaker tab.

Although SKEPTIC was billed as nationwide, no strong participant from out of the city showed up largely due to the competition's clash with the 2014 ALSA UI E-Comp, the country's longest running English debate tournament, which started on Friday.

JDF Open 2014: Trophy Goes to UI-UGM Composite Team

The rivalry between Universitas Indonesia and Universitas Gadjah Mada is a fixture in every institution-based tournament in the country. But it was a team consisting of debaters from the two schools that came out triumphant in the 2014 Jogjakarta Debate Forum Open. UI's Roderick Sibarani teamed up with UGM's Astri Agustina and under the name 'Saodah Agustina' they won the final debate although they were ranked lowest among the four.

Universitas Diponegoro graduate Satrio Adi Pratomo topped the speakers list but his 'We Can Still Make Explosion' team bowed to the champions in the final, which had a motion "This House Believes That Intelligence Should Be a Paramater to the Right of Voting". Eight of the 16 teams in the quarterfinals were full UGM teams, displaying the school's prominence in Yogyakarta tournaments, but all of them failed to clinch the title. JDF is the organization that unites debating societies in Yogyakarta. This year's JDF Open was the first time the tournament allowed competitors from all over the country.

Trio of UGM Debaters Lead DOTY 2013 Table

Three debaters from Universitas Gadjah Mada are leading the 2013 Debater of the Year table following the school's March dominance in the Aku Untuk Indonesiaku debate in Surabaya and the English Parade contest in Malang.  One of them, Amir Abdul Aziz, is alone at the top after winning AUI and taking the best speaker award in E-Parade. There are 6 UGM students in the top 10 and 11 in the top 20, showing the rest that 2013 has been good for this Yogyakarta-based powerhouse. This success, however, has a caveat. The strongest debaters from other powerhouses like Universitas Indonesia, Binus International and Institut Teknologi Bandung skipped the tournaments that UGM won in March. Jaran Walia Keeps Lead, UGM Debaters Swamp DOTY 2013 List

Jaran Walia from Binus International is still leading the 2013 Debater of the Year list after topping the speaker tab in last month's Asian English Olympics. Universitas Gadjah Mada debaters Amir Abdul Aziz and Alif Satria, however, are not far behind. They are part of the UGM wave that has flooded the list this year. Eighteen UGM students have gotten on the table, one-third of the total so far. After dominating the Solo Open Debating Championship in January, these Yogyakarta-based debaters created an all-UGM final in ALSA Unpad E-Challenge last month. That trend may continue this month as 5 UGM teams will compete in a 30-team English Parade competition in Malang, which will not be attended by the strongest institutions from Jakarta or Bandung. UGM Wins ACDC, Still King of Yogyakarta

Debating powerhouse Universitas Gadjah Mada yesterday proved currently the school has no rival in the Yogyakarta-Solo territory after championing the local ALSA UGM Crushbone Debating Competition and sweeping the top three spots on the speaker tab. #1 UGM A (Thoriq Murtadho, Erwina Salsabila, Nabila Aghniarizqa) defeated the cross-city rivals #2 Universitas Atma Jaya Yogyakarta A (Gratsia Kancanamaya, Sydney Samba, Nursantia Indriarty) in the grand final. 

NNDC 2012: UI Grabs Top 3 Team, Speaker Titles

What the Universitas Indonesia debaters achieved in the 2012 National Newbie Debating Competition is nothing short from total domination. They did not only win the competition but took home all of the top 3 team and individual awards. Three UI teams stormed into the grandfinal and left the other pair from Universitas Negeri Sebelas Maret at the last place in that debate.

#1 UI C (Agita Nalsalia & Florida Petresia Andriana) reigned supreme with #8 UI B (Andrearto Saleh & Kevin Wijaya) and #3 UI A (Muhammad Iqbal & Rio Trimono) coming second and third. #6 UNS (Juli Novianto & Liswindio Apendicaesar) exited at fourth in the final debate that had a topic on the decline of American influence. Agita Nalsalia also became the best speaker of the tournament with teammate Florida Petresia Andriana following right after her. The third individual place was shared by Muhammad Iqbal, Rio Trimono, UNS' Liswindio Apendicaesar and Universitas Islam Indonesia debater Putri Nurdina.

All debaters in the competition were novices, defined as those who have less than 2 years of varsity debating experience and no record of breaking in any national English debating event.

UI-ITB Composite Team "I Do" Win Jakarta Mini

Universitas Indonesia's Roderick Sibarani, the 2011 Debater of the Year, and the current leader of the 2012 list, Rifan Ibnu Rahman from Institut Teknologi Bandung, paired up as Team "I Do"  and championed the inaugural Jakarta Mini open tournament at Binus University. In the grand final, they defeated Binus International 1 (Invi Atmanegara & Jaran Walia), an UI team that called themselves "Manly Canisians" (Boby Andika & Albert Santoso) and a composite team "Kupu-Kupu Malam" (Astri Agustina/UGM & Bramesada Prasastyoga/UI). Boby Andika took home the best speaker award.

It was a night of victory for UI, the university with the most debating achievements in the country. At the same time with the Jakarta Mini announcements, UI novice debaters swept the top team and individual awards in the 2012 National Newbie Debating Competition in Yogyakarta. Earlier this month, an UI team also triumphed in the ALSA UI E-Comp, the longest-running debate tournament in Indonesia.   

BP Comps Jakarta Mini, NNDC Kick Off Today

Two debating tournaments using the British Parliamentary format with contrasting levels of experience are scheduled to start today on the main island of Java. The National Newbies Debating Championships will begin in the afternoon at Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta with 36  novice teams. In the capital, the Jakarta Mini, an open tournament that allows composites, is already underway since this morning at Binus University with a smaller number of participants but promising a higher quality of debating. Its roster includes past champions of Indonesia's 3 classics - IVED, JOVED and ALSA UI. Grand finals of both competitions will take place on Sunday.  

UNY Launches BP Tournament for Newbies

Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta plans to hold a British Parliamentary competition from May 18 to 20 exclusively for starters in varsity debating. Calling it the National Newbies Debating Championship, organizers limit participants to those with less than 2 years of college debating experience who have never broken into the knockout stage of any category in any national or international competition. The team cap is set at 40 and slots will be open from April 1. JOVED 2011: Undip Wins Trophy, Best Speaker, All Matches

Universitas Diponegoro came to the 15th Java Overland Varsities English Debate without a history of winning this tournament before but left unbeaten with the best team and top speaker trophies.

#1 Undip A (Satrio Adi Pratama, Rizky Akita, Edward Sutanto) defeated #6 Institut Teknologi Bandung C (Dito Krista, Rifan Ibnu Rahman, Safira Lazuardi) in the grand final that ended with a 7-2 split decision. They previously topped the tab as the only team without a loss in the preliminaries.

Satrio took the best speaker award, his third this year. He has never left a 2011 competition without such a prize so far. However, tonight's win was his first championship victory debating for the Semarang-based university in 2011. He won the Indonesian Finance Festival Debates last March with teammates from other schools. Last year, Satrio gave Undip its first major trophy at the 2010 National Universities English Debating Championships.

For ITB's Rifan, it was his fourth loss in a final this year. He has performed superbly since the first month of 2011 when he became top debater in the Indonesian Varsities English Debate but he has not clinched a championship yet. The 2011 JOVED finalists knocked out teams from Universitas Indonesia in the semi-finals, denying an all-UI final, which became a likelihood after 3 squads from this school reached the top 8.

The 15th edition of JOVED, the first tournament in Indonesia using an internationally accepted debating format, was held at Universitas Gadjah Mada in Yogyakarta. Purwokerto will host next year.

JOVED 2011: Three UI Teams Advance to Quarters

All of Universitas Indonesia's 3 teams at the 2011 Java Overland Varsities English Debate marched to the quarterfinals after beating their opponents today. An all-UI final is still a possibility. Binus International could not match that feat as 2 teams fell in the octofinals, leaving only one squad standing. The top 8 teams of the preliminaries are still intact.

JOVED 2011: Undefeated Undip Tops Break List

Universitas Diponegoro, a school that has never won the Java Overland Varsities English Debate before, broke first into the elimination round of this year's edition. Undip A (Satrio Adi Pratama, Rizky Akita, Edward Sutanto) won all of their 6 preliminary debates.

The competition in the 15th JOVED has been tight so far with only 5 teams out of 60 with more than 4 wins. The second day of prelims featured motions on economics, environment and law. Motions on international relations, security and current affairs have yet to emerge.

Universitas Indonesia and Binus International Pool of English Debaters saw all of their 3 teams advancing into the knockouts. JOVED 2011: Non-Politics Motions Fill First Day of Prelims

The preliminaries of the 15th Java Overland Varsities English Debate in Yogyakarta began today with 3 rounds that did not touch hard politics. Sports theme kicked off the competition, the second round had prepared motions on technology and debates at the end of the day were all about marriage. This signals that economics, politics and international relations will dominate the next rounds. Teams need to go through 3 more preliminary debates tomorrow before the late night break announcement.
The motions that were used on Day 1 of debates are as follows:

• THBT fans should have more than half of the ownership for the team they support
• THW allow people with physical disabilities to enter the Olympics

• THBT European Union should allow food products to be irradiated

• THBT courts should refuse to recognize pre-nuptial agreement

JOVED 2011: 60 Teams Descend on UGM's Bulaksumur

Competitive English debating in Indonesia jumpstarted its proliferation through the Java Overland Varsities English Debate in 1997 and today 60 teams have arrived at Universitas Gadjah Mada's Bulaksumur campus in Yogyakarta to celebrate the competition's 15th edition.

Before JOVED, there were already a few sporadic English debating contests in Indonesia, including the long-running ALSA UI E-Comp. But they did not follow internationally accepted rules and almost all of them were part of a larger English-themed event.

JOVED 1997 gathered teams from all over the main island of Java for the sole purpose of competitive debating and became the launchpad of an activity that has now spread across the archipelago.  It also introduced a mechanism called the JOVED Council Meeting, which does not only select the host for the next tournament but also provides an official stage for discussions on all matters related to debating in Indonesia. Currently, JOVED is a truly national tournament with participants from outside Java.

JOVED first used the Australasian uninterrupted 3-on-3 format just like the 1997 All-Asians that inspired its conception. When All-Asians modified the model by allowing POIs, JOVED followed suit. While All-Asians have ceased with UADC as its replacement, JOVED is still alive and kicking.

After a series of team pullouts, resignations of 3 DCAs, withdrawals of invited adjudicators and a change to a prepared motion, JOVED will begin today with accreditations. All teams must go through 6 preliminary rounds on Saturday and Sunday. The best 16 will go to the octofinals on July 25 and the grandfinal will take place the next day. UI Debaters Defend Bawor Cup Title

#1 UI A (Ahdiat Permana & Dimas Hokka) are the masters of Bawor Cup. They defended their title last night in the final of the tournament's second edition against #3 UI C (Egalita Irfan & Indra Kusuma), #4 Universitas Gadjah Mada A (Ika Septihandayani & Eldhianto Jusuf) and #15 Sekolah Tinggi Akuntansi Negara A (By Charles Butarbutar & Hendy Prihambudi). Bawor Cup started last year to bring top Indonesian debaters to the Purwokerto region, where debating is under-developed.

For Hokka, the victory was his second trophy in as many weeks after championing the ESL category of the 2011 Australasians Intervarsity Debating Championships last week. He is now bent on scoring a hattrick in the 2011 Java Overland Varsities English Debate that will start tomorrow in Yogyakarta.

The UI team won the prize to compete in the prestigious 2011 World Universities Peace Invitational Debate in December fully financed by Bawor Cup sponsors. Organizers also promised to send the top 2 speakers to the Kuala Lumpur Open Challenge in August and that honor went to the UGM pair who came first and second on the tab.
