DOTY 2014: UGM Debaters Flood Top 10 After Busy September

Universitas Gadjah Mada debaters did not only keep the pole position in the 2014 Debater of the Year table but also took the majority of spots in the Top 10 after results from six tournaments in September were added. Six UGM debaters now claim the eight highest ranks of DOTY 2014. Indriani Pratiwi is still leading the pack following her victory in the Bawor Cup. Other UGM speakers received bonus points by reaching the semifinals of the Indonesia Debate Open, which had more international participants than local ones due to the high registration fee. The DOTY table appreciates achievements in open international tournaments. IDO 2014, which had no Indonesian debater in the final, had a definite international flavour.

The other September tournaments that the DOTY calculations considered were the agricultural debate in Bogor, where host Institut Pertanian Bogor pulled off an upset against a highly favoured UGM team, the Just for Fun debate at Universitas Indonesia, the National Debate Competition-National Economic Seminar in Bandung and the debate competition at Universitas Soegijapranata in Semarang.

The only debaters who can spoil the rise of the first DOTY from UGM come from UI and all of them just graduated in August. Graduates still can harvest points if they start the year as a student. It is common practice in the international debating world to give a grace period for such debaters. If these debaters are allowed to compete in the World Universities Debating Championship at the end of the year, DOTY will also count them in. Indeed, the two most recent DOTYs secured the title after they graduated. This year the chance is not as large because there are only two national tournaments left that allow graduates to compete, Ganesha Open and Founders Trophy, and the UGM students are leading the table with a comfortable cushion. It is more likely to see a UGM debater snatch the title considering the available opportunities.

Host IPB Wins Agricultural Debate, Beats UGM Favourites

Little known debaters from Institut Pertanian Bogor, Indonesia's top agricultural school, showed thematic competency can ensure victory with their triumph in the Debate Competition on Environment and Agriculture that was held on their own campus yesterday. In the final, IPB A (Anwari Sugiharto & Adhi Pranata), who had failed to excel in past tournaments, defeated runaway favourite Universitas Gadjah Mada A (Caessar Pronocitro & Erwina Salsabila), both debaters have won prestigious awards for years, UGM B (Wida Wahyuni & Noel Hasintongan) and Universitas Indonesia A (Qurrat Abu Ayub & Ayu Sistiafi). This was the first time IPB championed a well-attended debate competition, let alone an international one.

The success in the final was no fluke because IPB debater Adhi Pranata also topped the individual tab and his partner Anwari Sugiharto came second on that list, showing their prominence in the preliminary rounds. In line with the competition's name, most debates had an agricultural theme. The winners were the only agricultural students in the final, in which they proposed the lifting of protectionist policies on agricultural products, an issue that they study at the university. The other finalists were international relations, french literature, biology and medical students.
    

WUDC 2015: 10 Indonesian Teams Secure Slots, ITB Missing

Ten teams from 7 Indonesian institutions are on the updated attendance list of the 2015 World Universities Debating Championship in Kuala Lumpur. Those who have been part of the original list should pay before July 31 while teams that got updated allocations have until August 29 to meet their payment obligations. The number of Indonesian participants may increase if other teams from Indonesia can get on the main list after the aforementioned deadlines. Institut Teknologi Bandung, which championed the 2014 WUDC's English-as-Foreign-Language category, was missing from the main list after its allocation was dropped. UADC 2014: Indonesian Results

A record of 17 teams from 12 Indonesian institutions went to the 2014 United Asian Debating Championships in Singapore but none could break into the main elimination stage. Universitas Gadjah Mada 2 (Romario Tambunan, Erwina Salsabila, Nabila Aghniarizqa) and Universitas Atma Jaya 1 (Cindy Fransisca, Kario Teguh, Silvya Suwandy) created the 5th all-Indonesian final streak  in the English-as-Foreign-Language category in as many years. UADC 2014: Indonesia Comes With Big Delegation, Bali Bid

The 2014 United Asian Debating Championships will see dozens of debaters from 12 Indonesian institutions and a campaign to bring the tournament to Bali. The intention to boost the nation's presence on the regional debating map is stronger than ever. Indonesian teams have dominated UADC's English-as-Foreign-Language category with four consecutive all-Indonesia EFL finals. But none from Indonesia has been able to break into the main knockouts. Asia's number one competition, which started in 2010, also has never been hosted in Indonesia.

Several Indonesian teams had broken into the main elimination stages of Asian tournaments that preceded UADC - the Asian Intervarsities Debating Championships (All-Asians) and the Asian Universities Debating Championships (AUDC). In 2007, Institut Teknologi Bandung hosted AUDC. But since the two events merged into UADC in 2010, those two accomplishments, breaking in the open category or hosting, have been elusive.

This year's UADC starts today at Singapore's Nanyang Technological University, a place where Indonesian varsity debating took off. When NTU hosted the 1997 All-Asians, teams from Universitas Indonesia and Universitas Parahyangan became the first from Indonesia to compete in a major international debating championship. As soon as the debaters came home, UI established the pioneer debating society in Indonesia and Unpar launched the country's first tournament using an internationally accepted format. The two trailblazing universities are now back at NTU along with an army of Indonesian debaters, seeking to create new history.

They have prepared a campaign that promises debaters an unforgettable experience of debating on paradise island where the world's best natural beaches meet the highly artistic Balinese culture. A winning bid along with success in the debating chambers will excite the Indonesian debating scene. On the 17th anniversary of Indonesia's participation on the Asian debating stage, it is time for Indonesian debaters to shine at the embarkation point where the journey began. IVED 2014: Unbeaten UGM Trio Break First, Giant-killing Sadhar in Top 4

Universitas Gadjah Mada A (Alif Satria, Indriani Pratiwi, Romario Tambunan) topped the tab after winning all of their 6 preliminary rounds in the 2014 Indonesian Varsities English Debate. The exact trio won the 2013 ALSA UGM Crushbone Debate in November.  All 3 UGM teams progressed into the knockouts along with 3 teams from rival powerhouse Institut Teknologi Bandung. Fine achievements but not the spectacle of this tournament.

The debaters who are stealing the show come from Universitas Sanata Dharma, a Yogyakarta school that has not won any nationwide competition before. Not only that both of its teams advanced, Sadhar A (Tethy Cahyati Pesoa, Irene Anindyaputri, Vania Setiowati) even came fourth after defeating 2 teams from eight-time IVED champion Universitas Indonesia in the prelims. The last victory denied UI B, a team with three award-winning members, a spot in the octofinals. Last year, a Sadhar team only had a 2-4 record and ended far below the break line. WUDC 2014: Indonesian Results

Vicario Reinaldo (ITB A) offers a POI in the WUDC EFL final in Chennai

The 2014 World Universities Debating Championships in Chennai provided a high and a low for Indonesian debating. For the first time, a team from Indonesia grabbed a WUDC trophy after Institut Teknologi Bandung A (Vicario Reinaldo & Fauzan Reza Maulana) beat their opponents in the final of the English-as-Foreign-Language category,  putting our country on the map. They made all Indonesian debaters proud and showed that excellence on the world stage is very possible to attain.

However, WUDC 2014 also had a low point. Musamus University A from Papua became the worst team of the tournament with zero points after getting the 4th rank in all 9 preliminary matches. This was the first time an Indonesian team left WUDC pointless. The debaters also populated the floor of the tab with one of them scoring as low as 54 in a debate. This underlines how lack of preparation and involvement in the domestic circuit can spell disaster in an international competition.

Besides these two contrasting teams, there were nine other Indonesian pairs. Universitas Gadjah Mada A (Amir Abdul Aziz & Nabila Aghniarizqa) like ITB A also broke into the EFL knockouts. National champions Binus International A (Jaran Walia & Invi Atmanegara) along with 2 teams from Universitas Indonesia actually scored higher than UGM A and ITB A but they could not progress after the prelims because they were considered as English-as-Second-Language teams and failed to gather enough points to break into the ESL elimination stage. 

Only those with less than 3 months of living in an English-speaking country during school age or 6 months of studying in an institution where English is the instruction language can qualify as EFL speakers. The ESL threshold is less than 5 years of living in an English-speaking country during school age or studying in institutions where English is the instruction language.

Outside the historic ITB victory in the EFL category, other Indonesian records stay intact. The top scoring Indonesian team of all time gathered 16 points in WUDC 2008. The highest ranked Indonesian team ended at #85 in WUDC 1999. The best Indonesian speaker reached #186 also in WUDC 1999. The WUDC 2014 Indonesian debaters failed to best these stats. Interestingly, the highest ranked Indonesian speaker comes from a foreign school. It was Stevensen Chen, a former Medan high school debater who now studies at Hitotsubashi University in Japan. The detailed results of the Indonesian teams are as follows.

WUDC 2014: 11 Indonesian Teams Compete in the Most Prestigious Debate

The preliminary rounds of the 2014 World Universities Debating Championships began today in Chennai, India with 11 teams from Indonesia, including a pair from remote Papua province. They are as follows:

While no Indonesian has broken into the main knockouts of the most prestigious debate competition on the planet, some have advanced into the ESL/EFL elimination stage. As usual, there will be 9 mandatory rounds at WUDC. The best Indonesian team in terms of score were Astrid Kusumawardhani and Miranda Anwar from UI with 16 points in WUDC 2008. They broke first into the ESL knockouts that year. Let's see whether the WUDC 2014 teams can match that feat or break the record.      

NUDC 2013: No Upsets Yet, Favorites All Sail to Semis

The semifinalists of the 2013 National University Debating Championship are all from Java-based institutions with years of experience and cabinets of trophies. They include the 5 teams favored to win the tournament - Universitas Bina Nusantara, Universitas Indonesia, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Institut Teknologi Bandung and Universitas Bakrie.

Emerging clubs failed to break the ceiling while non-Java teams were already out of the contention after the octofinals. The lowest-ranked survivor is #19 Institut Pertanian Bogor,  not a newcomer. One of its debaters went to the World Universities Debating Championships in Berlin and won the novice category at the 2011 Indonesian Varsities English Debate. Although none of the seven Indonesian teams that went to the 2013 United Asian Debating Championships in Manila could break into the top 16, Institut Teknologi Bandung 1 (Alris Alfharisi, M. Arifian Adin, Vicario Reinalso) and Universitas Parahyangan 1 (Josefhine Chitra, Ignatius Ivan, Revian Wirabuana) continued the all-Indonesian final streak  in the English-as-Foreign-Language category, which started from the 1st UADC in 2010. NUDC 2013: Binus Streak in Greater Jakarta Regionals Continues

Teams from the Binus University group won the past two Greater Jakarta regional selections before they both eventually claimed the national BP debating title. The 2013 team (Invi Atmanegara & Jaran Walia) continued the first part of the streak today, overcoming challenge from Universitas Indonesia (Egalita Irfan & Roderick Sibarani) in the final.

Binus International Pool of English Debaters (Bipeds) and Bina Nusantara English Club (BNEC) take turns in representing Binus in the National Universities Debating Championships. It is Bipeds time this year. The Binus-UI rivalry is expected to continue in the nationals next month.     

The two other teams in the Region 3 final were dark horse Institut Pertanian Bogor and Universitas Pelita Harapan, a school that failed to reach the semifinals last year. Besides the four colleges, semifinalists Universitas Atma Jaya, Universitas Bakrie, Universitas Paramadina and Universitas Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa are also eligible to proceed to the big debate.

The division of the regions follows the Kopertis system, which is the way private Indonesian universities are regionally monitored. Each of the 12 regions can send the best 8 teams to the nationals, which will have 96 squads -- 192 debaters and 96 N1 adjudicators.

WUDC 2013: Indonesian Results

The 2013 World Universities Debating Championships had 10 Indonesian teams. Two of them, Universitas Gadjah Mada A and Universitas Atma Jaya A, broke into the EFL quarterfinals. Several Indonesian speakers qualified as ESL, a higher category than EFL, including Reza Aryani (UI A) who was the best among Indonesians. Had she passed the EFL requirement, UI A would have been the tournament's top  EFL team, earning them a spot in the elimination phase. Only those with less than 3 months of living in an English-speaking country during school age or 6 months of studying in an institution where English is the instruction language can qualify as EFL speakers. The ESL threshold is less than 5 years of living in an English-speaking country during school age or studying in institutions where English is the instruction language.

Almost 400 teams or 800 speakers from over 40 countries joined WUDC 2013. The top team on the Open tab scored 24 points while the last breaking pair Monash University B, which eventually became the champions, had 17. WUDC 2013: Indonesian Teams Still in Contention After R6

Results after R6 of the 2013 World Universities Debating Championships, released by the organisers, show several Indonesian teams still have the hope to break into elimination stage, including in the open competition. With the new 48-team break system, teams with 17 points after 9 rounds may have a chance to advance into the main knockouts. Last year, teams with 15 points could make the cut for the ESL quarterfinals while a squad had to possess 13 points to safely break in the EFL category. The expansion from 8 to 16 teams that can break in the EFL group this year may give teams with 11 points a shot while the ESL bar stays the same.

No Indonesian has broken into the main WUDC out rounds or reached the top 48 team list. The only time Indonesians got an under-100 rank was in 1999 when the UI pair of Ria Nuri Dharmawan and Puguh "Pupung" Priambodo ended at #85 during the country's first foray in Worlds. Ria now is a World Bank lawyer while Pupung is a diplomat. Last year, another UI duo (Ahmad Naufal Dai & Irene Severina) broke 1st in the EFL category with 14 points while a team from Sekolah Tinggi Akuntansi Negara (Teddy Triatmojo & Halim Nuswantoro) came 8th with 13 points but both fell in the semifinals.
