NUDC 2014: Seeded Java Regions Conclude Their Selections

All Java regions have finished selecting teams that will compete in the National Universities Debating Championship, which may be held later in August. Non-Java teams never managed to reach the final of NUDC, let alone win it. NUDC is the state-sponsored debating tournament that gives opportunity for varsity debaters from all corners of the country to participate. Although the geographical cover is truly nationwide, NUDC has a lower overall quality of participants than other major tournaments because it only allows each university to send one team, preventing powerhouses to fill the competition with their members, who prepare better than those who lack access to proper training methods. Nonetheless, NUDC winners are the official national champions for the British Parliamentary style of debating.  

There were a couple of surprises in the Java selections. Powerhouse Universitas Atma Jaya Jakarta failed to qualify from the Greater Jakarta regionals while dark horse Universitas Jember repeated last year's upset by advancing first in East Java above universitties from Malang and Surabaya that have better track records. One of the pioneers of Indonesian debating, Universitas Parahyangan, will have no representation for the second time in a row due to a clash with the school's academic calender, the same reason behind last year's absence. UGM Teams Break First in This Year's NNDC, E-Fiesta

Teams from Universitas Gadjah Mada progressed first in two nationwide debating tournaments that reached their breaking announcement today -- the 3rd National Newbie Debating Competition in Yogyakarta and the English Fiesta in Malang. There is also a third championship going on this weekend in Tangerang, the 2014 International Humanitarian Law National Debate Competition, but it will only have its last preliminary round tomorrow morning. 

At NNDC, UGM A (Aryanda Putra Tony & Nalaputi Basoeki) led the list in the British Parliamentary style contest exclusively for novices. Three teams from rival Universitas Indonesia followed straight after. UI won all two of the past editions of NNDC. Here is the complete list.

DOTY 2014: UGM Debaters Keep Leading the Table

Two debaters from Universitas Gadjah Mada are still at the top of the 2014 IndoDebate Debater of the Year table. Romario Tambunan leads after reaching the final of the 2014 Jogjakarta Debate Forum Open and Indriani Pratiwi tails him closely. They both gave UGM its third national 3-on-3 title from the Indonesian Varsities English Debate last January. Whether they could keep leading is still unclear. UGM debaters had a strong start last year but failed to outlast the formidable Binus International pair of Jaran Walia, who eventually won the third DOTY title, and Invi Atmanegara in crucial competitions in the second half of 2013.

Right behind the UGM duo, the first DOTY title holder, Roderick Sibarani from Universitas Indonesia, is making a case as he is bent on making the most out of his last year in college. His partnership with Astri Agustina, another veteran but from UGM, triumphed in the JDF Open. The other tournament that contributed to the list is the 2014 Asian English Olympics. However, foreigners raided the top awards and filled the top side of the individual tab, allowing only very few Indonesians to harvest points. FT 2013: UI-ITB Graduates Claw Trophy, Speaker Awards

Founders Trophy 2013 champions -

A team comprising former Universitas Indonesia debater Melanie Tedja and Institut Teknologi Bandung graduate Luthfi "Uphie" Abdurrahman won the 2013 EDSUI Founders Trophy, billed as the "Clash of the Predators". They earned the right to hold the Papuan wooden sculpture until the next edition.

Indeed, both of them have been predatory for years. For Melanie, it was her second FT victory. She also bagged the best speaker award, her fifth after receiving it in 2003, 2005, 2009 and 2011. For Uphie, it was his first time becoming FT champion after he came close a few times, including reaching the final last year. He was the best speaker of FT 2012 and 2008. This year he was the best speaker in the final and came second overall.

In the final, they defended the motion "This House Believes That the Fate of Jerusalem Should Only Be Decided by its Native Inhabitants and Their Residing Offspring" from Closing Government. The pair defeated Roderick Sibarani (UI)/Egalita Irfan (UI), Boby Ruitang (UI)/Satrio Adi Pratama (Ex-Undip) and Eldhianto Jusuf (Ex-UGM)/Bernardo Tampubolon (Ex-UGM). FT, the first nationwide open BP competition in Indonesia, is considered as the toughest because it attracts debaters from all generations.

The best novice team award went to a high school team consisting of Bradley Gunawan (Sang Timur) and John Amadeo (Raffles) who competed under a debate scholarship from EDSUI. They advanced as far as the quarterfinals. Both collected the same speaker points, making them co-best novice speakers in the tournament. Besides the trophies, FT overall and novice winners, as well as, round best speakers traditionally receive books donated by Universitas Indonesia alumni.

GMDT 2013: Home Team UGM Breaks First with Clean Sheet

#1 Universitas Gadjah Mada A (Nabila Aghniarizqa, Alif Satria, Romario Tambunan) defeated all their opponents in the preliminary rounds to advance first into the octofinals of the inaugural Gadjah Mada Debate Tournament. Bawor Cup 2013: UGM Teams Lead Break List

Universitas Gadjah Mada teams took the first and second spots after 5 preliminary rounds of the 2013 Bawor Cup in Purwokerto, advancing into the quarterfinals as favourites. For the last 3 years, Universitas Indonesia debaters have always won the tournament that awards the champion with a free ticket to debate in the World Universities Peace Invitational Debate in Malaysia. Two UI teams are still in contention this year after they broke fourth and fifth.

NUDC 2013: Underdog UKSW Tops C. Java, Fave ITB Takes W. Java

Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana, a school that has been involved in competitive debating since 1998 but without notable record, finally made a mark by championing the Central Java qualifier for the 2013 National University Debating Championship. In West Java, powerhouse Institut Teknologi Bandung, the 2009 national champion, reclaimed regional glory.

In the Central Java final, UKSW (Katherine Soekias & Rio Giovano) bested Universitas Diponegoro, the 2010 national champion and the usual winner of Region VI, Universitas Negeri Semarang and Universitas Negeri Sebelas Maret Solo in a debate on China. In West Java, ITB (Fauzan Reza Maulana & Vicario Reinaldo), the duo who won the Asian English Olympics last February, won the Region IV crown after beating Universitas Padjadjaran, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia and Politeknik Telkom. Last year, ITB lost the title to Universitas Parahyangan which had to forego this year's edition due to conflict with exams.

The division of the regions follows the Kopertis system, which is the way private Indonesian universities are regionally monitored. Each of the 12 regions can send the best 8 teams to the nationals, which will have 96 squads -- 192 debaters and 96 N1 adjudicators. All schools that reach the regional semifinals are eligible to advance to the main championship next month.

NNDC 2013: Title Stays in Hands of Reigning Champs UI

The journey might not be as smooth as last year's clean sweep but Universitas Indonesia debaters won the National Newbie Debating Competition again today. #8 UI A (Tanita Rahmani & Dio Vio Alfath), the lowest-ranked team in the final, retained the title for the powerhouse after defeating long-time rivals #1 Universitas Gadjah Mada B (Mariette Wahyuningsih & Sufi Adenda), emerging force #6 Universitas Paramadina (Retno Dewati & Putu Lumina Mentari) and perennial contenders #7 Universitas Diponegoro (Rafinata Fasihani & Temi Chintia) in the last debate.

With this victory, UI continues its winning streak of all tournaments exclusively for novices since 2009. From 2006, UI annually runs the 3-on-3 tournament for novices; all bar the 2009 edition witnessed the home team won. Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta started NNDC, the BP-style version, last year. In the inaugural championship, UI took first, second and third places. In 2012, UI also grabbed the three top speaker awards. This year, UGM's Sufi Adenda went home with the best individual title.

This is also UI's first victory in a large competition in 2913 after coming short in other tournaments. UI teams had collected 2 trophies before NNDC but they were from small, theme-based competitions. 

  

NNDC 2013: UGM Teams Lead Break List, UI Struggling

Universitas Gadjah Mada teams broke first and second in the 2013 National Newbie Debating Competition while reigning champions Universitas Indonesia struggled to replicate last year's dominance. UI squads were unstoppable in the inaugural 2012 edition, taking the first three team and individual awards, but only one team could break this time while another failed to make the cut. IVED 2013: Tab Room Flaws Cost UPH a Milestone Break Spot

Universitas Pelita Harapan ranked higher than the eventual novice champion of the 2013 Indonesian Varsities English Debate but failed to break into the knockouts of that category due to errors in the tab room. Members of the adjudication core have apologized for this mistake, which is impossible to correct a week after the competition. In the written apology, the A-core said novice officers and tabmasters gave UPH different codes. This discrepancy failed to receive notice from the chief adjudicator and her deputies because the tab room was "hectic" before breaking announcement and they "had no time to double and triple-check" the novice break list, which had no sign of the UPH team. This mess-up only became known after the tournament, leaving no room for correction. The IVED 2013 A-core consisted of Kirana Kania (ITB), Boby Andika (UI), Cindy Fransisca (Atma Jaya) and Edward Sutanto (Undip) who all have ample tournament experience. They considered the miss as a "tragedy".

UPH debaters used the code PHASED, the name of their club, in IVED 2013 and registered themselves as novice. They should have broken third in the novice category, higher than the two teams that debated in the final -- eventual winner Binus University B and runner-up Institut Teknologi Bandung A who broke fourth and third respectively. UPH has never broken in any IVED category before and would have set a school milestone had the tabulation gone properly. Indeed, nobody could predict where UPH would have ended if they had the opportunity to break. Still, any tournament break list should be accurate and deserves double-checking, regardless of circumstance, especially in a prestigious one like IVED.

IVED 2013: Binus Intl, UGM, UI & Unhas Take 3 Break Spots Each

Twelve teams, or three-quarter, that broke into the top 16 of the 2013 Indonesian Varsities English Debate come from only 4 institutions as powerhouses Binus International, Universitas Indonesia, Universitas Gadjah Mada and  non-Java dark horse Universitas Hasanuddin each secured 3 spots. Undefeated Binus International A (Invi Atmanegara, Jaran Walia, Andrew Sadeli) broke first and seek to grab their club's first title from IVED - Indonesia's most prestigious 3-on-3 tournament.

Some old forces are struggling to maintain foothold. Former IVED champion Universitas Atma Jaya and national BP title holder Binus University, both Jakarta-based favourites, failed to send even one team into the main knockouts. However, these two universities at least have representatives in the novice break for consolation. Nobody from Universitas Parahyangan, a major school that pioneered Indonesian debating with UI in 1997, is left standing after 6 preliminary rounds. IVED 2013 will take place at Institut Teknologi Bandung from January 11-16, 2013. The adjudication core is led by IVED 2010 champion Kirana Kania from the host institution. Her deputies are E-Fest 2012 champion Cindy Fransisca (Universitas Atma Jaya), JOVED 2011 champion Edward Sutanto (Universitas Diponegoro) and Jakarta Mini 2012 best speaker Boby Andika (Universitas Indonesia).

JOVED 2012: The 16th Edition Kicks Off in Purwokerto

The first debate competition in Indonesia using an internationally accepted format - the Java Overland Varsities English Debate - is back with its 16th edition. Once more, the serene Central Java city of Purwokerto, which hosted the 4th JOVED in 2000, is embracing more than 100 Indonesian debaters who will fight for the title for the next five days. Last year Universitas Diponegoro championed the tournament for the first time without dropping a match. Favourites Universitas Indonesia this year is fielding a team with more than 5 trophies between the members. Purwokerto is where UI  won its first ever JOVED, an event it has not championed since 2009.

The host in 2000, Universitas Jenderal Soedirman, is also responsible for the organization this year and they also have assistance from Jakarta-based Binus University, which just won the National Universities English Debating Championship last week. The debater who was part of that triumphant Binus team, Sabarudin Adinugroho, is the chief adjudicator of JOVED 2012. After JOVED 2012 ends on July 11, the same organizing crew will hold the 3rd Bawor Cup that promises a free ticket to the 2012 World Universities Peace Invitational Debate in Malaysia for the champion.

NUEDC 2012: All Java in Main Semifinals, Undip Out

All of the 8 teams that will fight in the main semifinals of the 2012 National Universities English Debating Championship come from the country's main island of Java. However, one of them did not place among the top 8 on the prelim tab. #12 Universitas Negeri Jakarta pulled an upset in the quarterfinals, eliminating #4 Universitas Diponegoro - the champions of JOVED 2011. The main semifinals and championship debate will take place tomorrow at Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Kesehatan Bali. Here are the match ups.
