Host Wins ALSA Unpad E-Challenge 2012

#4 Universitas Padjadjaran A (Ashila Reza, Azwar Aziz, Rendi Prahara) today championed the 2012 ALSA Unpad E-Challenge Debate, which was held at their own campus, after defeating #3 Binus University B (Andi Fahmi, Cassandra Etania Liem, Prasetyo Gema) on a 5-4 split decision in the grand final. They defended the motion "This House Believes that States Have the Right to Unilateral Humanitarian Intervention". The winners reached the last debate after knocking out another Binus team who kept a clean sheet up to the semifinal match.

Rendi, the champion of last year's European Union Intervarsity Debating Championships, led his two team mates who had never made it into the knockouts of any varsity competition before. He also came second on the speaker tab right under Rosmiyana from Binus who took home the top individual award.

AEO 2012: NUS Wins But ITB's Rifan Tops Speaker Tab

Debaters from regional powerhouse National University of Singapore championed the 2012 Asian English Olympics but came short from sweeping the top speaker award. #2 NUS A (Hong Yu Xiao & Kenneth Kang) successfully defended the motion "This House Supports the Right of Neighbourhoods to Veto the Establishment of Religious Buildings". The NUS winners took the second and third spots on the speaker list while the top individual honour went to ITB's Rifan Ibnu Rahman. AEO 2012: NUS Teams Take Half of Grand Final Slots

Two teams from Asian debating powerhouse National University of Singapore sailed to the grand final of the 2012 Asian English Olympics at Binus University. #2 NUS A (Hong Yu Xiao & Kenneth Kang) and #4 NUS B (Danielle Goh & Andre Kua) will meet #8 Institut Teknologi Bandung B (Rifan Ibnu Rahman & Meutia Arinta) and darkhorse #11 Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang A (Bambang Trihadmojo & Hanif Falah) in the last debate tomorrow.

NUS teams have been the hot favourites since the competition began but #1 Universitas Atma Jaya A defeated them in the preliminaries. NUS B eliminated Atma A in the semifinals. Last year, NUS debaters championed the Asian 3-on-3 championships and reached the grandfinals of the continent's main tournament with the British Parliamentary format. The other non-Indonesian team in AEO 2012, Universiti Teknologi Petronas, fell in the quarterfinals.
