WUDC Waitlist Situation For Indonesian Teams

The organizers of the 2012 World Universities Debating Championships  have announced the 400 teams that can proceed to the second phase of registration, including 12 teams from Indonesia, but there are other Indonesian teams that may compete if they get bumped up following pullouts. (See complete list here)

The rule of thumb is any institution with a place after #300 on the registration list may only get one slot. This is the reason behind the slot reduction from three to one for Indonesian teams like UI, ITB, Unhas, Unpad, STAN and Binus International that managed to enter the last 100 spots in the main list. These teams are not eligible to get extra slots even if the pullouts are right above them.

The Indonesian schools on the waiting list with the numbers of teams that need to pull out before they can get bumped up are as follows:

Universitas Gadjah Mada (10)
Institut Pertanian Bogor (49)
Universitas Tarumanagara (50)
Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (51)
London School of Public Relations (52)
Universitas Diponegoro (53)
Politeknik Negeri Sriwijaya (54)
Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (62)
Politeknik Negeri Malang (92)
Universitas Pelita Harapan (95)
Universitas Negeri Padang (103)
Universitas Negeri Semarang (108)

The National Education Ministry has tried to take slots using the name Dikti and Belmawa for the winners of NUEDC but both are quite low in the waiting list (they need 59 and 61 pullouts) and they can only reserve one slot each. It is quite unlikely that 60 teams would resign from the WUDC, triggering questions on how will the winners of NUEDC go to Manila as promised, especially if they do not come from universities on the registration list.

  1. Hi Abu, I see UI is listed at #173. Isn't that before the #300 mark? Why is the slot still reduced to 1 team?

  2. Hi Anon,

    1. UI was the 173th institution that registered, not the 173th team. Many institutions that registered before UI booked more than one team so in the final team list there were more than 300 teams ahead of UI.

    2. After the 300th team, all institutions are only eligible to take one slot. The priority went to countries that are not represented in the first 300 teams. There are 5 Indonesian teams (3 Binus, 2 Atma) in that group so UI and other Indonesian teams weren't prioritized. Only after the country representation was completed, the organizers alloted one slot each to the remaining institutions on the list until it reached 400.
