Hasanuddin BP Pushes Back Date A Week, Lowers Cap to 60

Hasanuddin BP, the first major British Parliamentary debating tournament in eastern Indonesia, will take place from June 24 to 26, 2011, a week delay from the original plan. The Makassar-based competition is open for teams from Indonesian high schools and universities, composite squads and fresh graduates. Host Universitas Hasanuddin has also cut the team cap from 80 to 60 teams and 48 slots have been booked. Two high schools, SMA Rajawali Makassar and SMA 3 Tangerang Selatan, have each registered eight teams to this tournament, matching the institutional cap. Online registration closes on May 8, 2011. Team List for UMM English Fiesta (Varsity)

The list for Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang's English Fiesta varsity debates is out with teams from Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan and Sulawesi islands. The competition will run from April 28 to May 3, coinciding with the ALSA UI E-Comp. This may be the reason why only one team from Jakarta (Binus International) will be present at the Malang debates. The winner of English Fiesta will get a ticket to compete in the 15th IVED next year, which UMM will host, without paying registration fees. The list is as follows:

WUDC Waitlist Situation For Indonesian Teams

The organizers of the 2012 World Universities Debating Championships  have announced the 400 teams that can proceed to the second phase of registration, including 12 teams from Indonesia, but there are other Indonesian teams that may compete if they get bumped up following pullouts. (See complete list here)

The rule of thumb is any institution with a place after #300 on the registration list may only get one slot. This is the reason behind the slot reduction from three to one for Indonesian teams like UI, ITB, Unhas, Unpad, STAN and Binus International that managed to enter the last 100 spots in the main list. These teams are not eligible to get extra slots even if the pullouts are right above them.

The Indonesian schools on the waiting list with the numbers of teams that need to pull out before they can get bumped up are as follows:

The National Education Ministry has tried to take slots using the name Dikti and Belmawa for the winners of NUEDC but both are quite low in the waiting list (they need 59 and 61 pullouts) and they can only reserve one slot each. It is quite unlikely that 60 teams would resign from the WUDC, triggering questions on how will the winners of NUEDC go to Manila as promised, especially if they do not come from universities on the registration list.

New Blog Seeks to Run Articles on Indonesian Debating

Anna Alfaro Manurung, the debating coach of Binus International whose repertoire includes debating several times in WUDC and training a number of successful Indonesian teams for world-class tournaments, has recently launched a blog that promises to showcase articles on the Indonesian debating scene, including past and present personalities.

The i-debate blog also seeks to keep Indonesia abreast of developments in the debating world outside the archipelago and provide resources for case building. IndoDebate will continue to focus on chronicling the facts and figures of the Indonesian debating world and welcomes the interest to keep the debating community in this country well-informed.

Prepared Motions for ALSA UI E-Comp (High School)

ALSA UI English Competition's high school category is seen as the unofficial tournament to find Indonesia's best high school team and debaters of the year. Many former champions have continued to represent Indonesia in WSDC or excel at the varsity debating scene. It is the longest-running for its category by far and attracts schools from outside Java just like IVED for universities.
