NUEDC 2011: ITB Duo Top Break List

Institut Teknologi Bandung (Dito Krista & Rifan Ibnu Rahman) lead the 32 teams that advanced into the main knockout rounds of the 2011 National Universites English Debating Championships. The pair collected 20 points, one short from a perfect score.

STBA Teknokrat from Lampung became the first non-Java team in NUEDC 2011 to break at #8 but they pulled out from the open competition and opted to debate in the EFL category. Novice teams that enter the elite 32 can choose whether to debate with the best in the competition or play in the lower category, which offers more reachable prizes. The main octos and quarters will take place today at Universitas Diponegoro. The 8 teams with the best scores after 7 preliminary rounds are as follows:

NUEDC 2011: ITB Pair Lead with Perfect Score

A team from Institut Teknologi Bandung (Dito Krista & Rifan Ibnu Rahman) are having a brilliant run and leading the tab in the 2011 National Universities English Debating Championships with a perfect score of 15 victory points from 5 preliminary rounds. Round 6 ended the second day of debates today but adjudicators were told to keep the latest results secret. Dito last year won the Indonesian Varsities English Debate, which uses a 3-on-3 format, while Rifan was the best speaker in the 2011 IVED. This duo have improved a lot since the pair's unremarkable performance in the 2010 Founders Trophy, which like NUEDC uses the British Parliamentary style.

There is still one more preliminary round to go tomorrow before the top 32 teams that can proceed into the knockouts are revealed. Teams from Universitas Indonesia (Roderick Sibarani & Adlini Ilma Ghaisany), Universitas Gadjah Mada (Astri Agustina & Gentur Adiutama), Universitas Bakrie (Ammar Syah Anwar & Aryo Febrian), Universitas Padjadjaran (Mayang Puspita & Rendi Prahara) and Binus International (Astrio Feligent & Christian Leonardo) have collected respectable points and may continue to challenge ITB's winning streak in the coming rounds. Outside of the traditional Java-based powerhouses, Universitas Hasanuddin (Bama Andhika & Ahmad Thariqul) can emerge as a darkhorse after breaking into the Java-dominated top rooms several times.

Motions in the second day of debates at Universitas Diponegoro ranged from attacking the use of GDP in measuring a country's living standard, calling UN to act against member states that conduct LGBT prosecutions to requiring parents get approval from their children before a divorce.      

NUEDC 2011 Break Announcement Pushed Back One Day

The sudden decision to have 7 preliminaries in the 2011 National Universities English Debating Championships rather than the scheduled 5 rounds has pushed back the break announcement to June 24, one day later than the original plan. The first day of debates yesterday had 3 rounds and today the 95 universities will endure the same. Round 7 will take place on Friday morning and the top 32 teams with rights to proceed into the knockouts will only be revealed after that.

The first three motions ranged from abolishing affirmative action, building brothels on military bases and pushing away oil companies from green tech patents. Institut Teknologi Bandung (Dito Krista & Rifan Ibnu Rahman) ended the day with a perfect score of 9 but with 4 rounds to go and tough competition in the two top rooms it is still anyone's game.

NUEDC 2011 Opens with Change in the Number of Prelims

The 2011 National Universities English Debating Championships officially began today at Universitas Diponegoro with a decision to require all teams to undergo 7 debates at the preliminary stage rather than 5 rounds, which the organizers previously announced in their published rundown before the arrival of the participants in Semarang. While the new number of preliminary rounds is better suited for a competition that has more than 90 teams, the timing of the change, one day before the debates, surprised many and could have been better planned.

There may be 4 rounds on the first day of actual competition tomorrow, one more than scheduled, and that means participants may have to debate from early in the morning until nightfall. There may be 3 more preliminaries on the second day before the break announcement. The tabulation team will be under pressure to avoid any delay that can complicate an already tight schedule.

JOVED 2011 Changes DCA, Reveals Prepared Motions

The adjudication core of the upcoming Java Overland Varsities English Debate 2011 changed its line-up for the third time following the recent resignation of DCA Ahmad Naufal Dai from Universitas Indonesia. His replacement is schoolmate Ahdiat Permana, his partner when UI last won JOVED in 2009. The rest of the core are Chief Adjudicator Eldhianto Jusuf (Universitas Gadjah Mada), DCA Buna Rizal Rahman (Universitas Diponegoro) and DCA Ammar Syah Anwar (Universitas Bakrie).

The A-core also announced the prepared motions for the 15th edition of JOVED, the country's first debating competition using an internationally accepted format, which will take place from July 22 to 26 at Yogyakarta-based UGM. Those motions are as follows:


Economy

• THW implement Afro as a single currency for Africa
• THW grant the European Central Bank the rights to veto the government budget of EU member states
• THW eliminate offshore financial centers

Environment and Animal Welfare

• THBT energy companies of developed countries operating in developing countries should follow the environmental standards of their countries of origin
• THW oblige products to show their environmental cost to the consumers
• THBT the UN should adopt Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare

International Issues

• THW prefer multilateral party to bilateral for settling the dispute of Preah Vihear Temple hinterland
• THBT the West Bank barrier should be dismantled in order to attain peace between both conflicting parties
• THBT India should save itself the trouble and let Kashmir go

Science and Technology

• THBT road pricing in urban cities brings more harm than good
• THW endorse software programs protection with patent instead of copyright
• THBT EU should allow food products to be irradiated

Universities Across Indonesia Set for Final Round of NUEDC

95 universities, 95 teams, and 190 debaters are eligible to fight for the crown of Indonesia's largest debating competition next week in Semarang, according to the Ministry of National Education that is paying for all of the participants' travel, room and board. This is one team short from the original plan of 96 teams due to confusion in a regional selection and more can be absent if invitations fail to reach on time.   

The 2011 National Universities English Debating Championships will take place at Universitas Diponegoro from June 21 to 26, after being pushed back one day from the original schedule. NUEDC uses the four-pairs-in-a-match British Parliamentary format and that is why the ministry first wanted 8 entrants from each of the12 regional divisions to have 24 simultaneous debates in one preliminary round. Each university is only allowed to send one team, regardless of the depth in a school's debating squad.

However, Universitas Sam Ratulangi was allowed to send two teams to the regionals in Sulawesi and both of them broke into the top 8 amid protests. In the end, the ministry dropped one of those teams, forcing the need for a swing team in the national round. Meanwhile, many teams are still looking for the ministry's official invitation and confused with the travel arrangements, opening the chance for pullouts and more swing teams.

Despite the large number of teams, NUEDC will only have 5 preliminary rounds to select the best 32 teams that can break into the octofinals of the main category. NUEDC has a separate category for universities that have never broken into the knockouts of any national-scale tournament with debaters who have never stayed abroad for more than 3 months. This category is called EFL although the requirements are more developmental than honoring those whose first language is not English. Many strong schools are also represented by debaters who consider English as a foreign lingo.

Out of the 95 teams, there are a few teams with debaters who have won a national-scale tournament or become the EFL winners of a international debating event. The teams that may stand out are:

IndoDebate's Debater of the Year Rankings as of June 2011

IndoDebate's Debater of the Year table for June incorporated the results from the 2011 United Asian Debating Championships' English-as-Foreign-Language category, which was appraised like a national scale tournament, and SODE, the open tournament in Surabaya that attracted debaters from beyond the East Java region. Former IVED and JOVED champions, as well as, the finalists of the recent English Fiesta competed in SODE along side debating coaches and high school students.


While UADC 2011 was more prestigious than any Indonesia-based competition, there were less than two dozen EFL teams and the quality of the EFL category's knockouts was on par with a national contest. Only achievements in the main arena of a major international competition will get higher points in the DOTY table.


Like many other unofficial ranking systems, the DOTY formula is arbitrary and has its downside. IndoDebate's DOTY does not grade a tournament that it is open for all Indonesian college students and may fail to detect competitions, eventhough they invite universities across the country, if organizers do not announce results on the Indodebaters mailing list. However, this table will always strive for objectivity and freedom from regional or school bias.     
    
The results of the two additional competitions catapulted several debaters, especially Ammar Syah Anwar from Universitas Bakrie and Astri Agustina from Universitas Gadjah Mada, to the top 10 but the highest-ranked five stayed the same. The DOTY table is prone to change next month as the National Universities English Debating Championships will take place next week and half of top 10, including Ammar and Astri, will be competing.
