Reigning champion Universitas Indonesia and its longtime rival Universitas Gadjah Mada showed their might in the 2013 Java Overland Varsities English Debate after 2 of their teams stayed undefeated after 3 prelims yesterday. UGM actually sent 3 teams but the third lost to a UI team. There will be 3 more rounds today before the break that will be announced on Monday.
There are 44 teams competing in the 17th edition of JOVED, the first debating tournament in Indonesia that used an internationally accepted format. Strong Jakarta private schools Universitas Atma Jaya and Binus University, which won this competition before, are not present. And so are teams from Binus International, which reached the finals of this year's 2 other classics - ALSA UI and IVED - and championed the latter.
JOVED 2013 is taking place at Universitas Brawijaya in Malang. One of the host teams is also on 3-0 heading for R4 today. They may become the darkhorse in a tournament where UI and UGM look poised to dominate.
