Universitas Gadjah Mada (Alif Satria, Indriani Pratiwi, Pazka Darmawan) became the first Indonesian team that could qualify for the knockouts of an overseas debating tournament this year after breaking into the quarterfinals of the 2013 International Humanitarian Law Debate in Kuala Lumpur. Seven other teams were all Malaysian. In the end, debaters from powerhouse International Islamic University created a final between themselves with IIU Past, Present and Future (Mohammad Fareez Zahir, Sheikh Faizal, Maher Rajan) taking the crown.
The tournament, which is annually held by the International Committee of the Red Cross delegation in Kuala Lumpur, had 40 teams from Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. The international round allows all sorts of varsity teams, including hybrids, starkly different from the national Indonesian selection that limits participation for International Relations students only.
